  • “I really appreciate that art is leading the way-here in this building and into the new building.”-Skwetsimeltxw Willard ‘Buddy’ Joseph, Elder in Residence
Friday, June 21, is National Indigenous Peoples Day, a day to recognize and celebrate the history, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples across Canada.
As part of the Gallery’s commitment to reconciliation, we recognize the vital role that art plays in expressing and preserving cultural heritage. Indigenous art and artists, in particular, offer profound insights into the histories, stories and identities of Indigenous peoples. It challenges us to reflect on our shared history and inspires us to strive for a more inclusive and respectful future, while also addressing contemporary issues and fostering dialogue and understanding.
Helping to guide our work around reconciliation, the Gallery is fortunate to have the advice and support of our Indigenous Advisory Council, along with our Elder in Residence Skwetsimeltxw Willard "Buddy" Joseph (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh/Squamish).
In acknowledgement of National Indigenous Peoples Day, we have a special video message from Elder Buddy. He speaks to the commitments he sees the Gallery making and our ongoing work towards reconciliation, now and into the future.
