Hi everyone, and welcome to the first video in my color theory series! Let's mix our own set of 8 neutral grey paints using just black and white. These paints are really useful for painting black, white, and also general color mixing. Once you mix up a couple of these, you won't ever want to buy grey paint again!

What a coincidence, only yesterday I was going through my PDF's from Instar Paints. There's a section in the Value Painting PDF about Intensity and creating a Grey Scale paint set, I was thinking that would be cool to have. Then this video popped up today, must be a sign!!
Fortunately Instar do 50ml refill bottles. They do 9 grey mixes between the black and white, starting at 10:0 with the black and ending with 0:10 with the white. So 9:1, 8:2, 7:3 etc. Might make a start on it tomorrow, got enough bottles to do 7 mixes. That would be a good start, could leave out the 9:1 and the 1:9 mixes for now

@@MattsHobbyHour They are UK based, not sure if they have a distributor in the US or not. They have loads of really useful free downloads. The blank swatches are really handy along with the mixing formula's

Thanks for watching! I only made #4 from craft paint, since that's the only grey I typically use on bases. I do have some craft paint copies of Rhinox Hide and a few other browns (I'm planning on making that video some time too)
I want to do this with Vallejo Game Color paints. Realistically if I were to buy a few bottles of black and white to mix my greys, what sort of ratio should I get? Obvs a black for #1 and white for #10...but for the other 8 should I get 4 black and 4 white? That should balance out a full 1-10 range of black to white across a range of greys shouldn't it? Brilliant video by the way 👏👌❤️👍😎
I mixed up all 8 at once when the new VGC formula came out. If I remember correctly I bought 6 of each just so I knew I would have extra. Adding in some airbrush medium gave me a little more paint too. I think I ended up using 5 white and 4 black. Black is stronger of the two so you'll end up needing a lot more white for the lighter mixes (I think grey 8 is like 95% white).
One tip to avoid wasting any paint. There will always be a little paint left in the white/black bottles at the end. I added some airbrush medium to dilute it and shook it up, then transferred all that diluted paint to a single bottle for airbrushing later. I did that both for white and black.
