Ice, I think the jet inbound for O'Hare was passing by the north side of the brown office building to land on 27L or 27C. 22L is practically never used for arrivals at ORD.
@@ice711real That is possible, or 22L might be one of the landing runways in a rare south crosswind condition strong enough to give pilots trouble landing to the west on the 27/28 runways. Once this results in enough pilot complaints and missed approaches, ATC will consider changing to a crosswind configuration using the 4-22s for arrival because delay is already a problem and will probably just grow anyway until the wind changes. But using 22L for arrivals (or 4L in the corresponding East Flow configuration) would shut down the main E-W parallels for arrivals, crippling the airport and backing up traffic all over the airspace system. Not gonna happen very often with an airport as busy and important as ORD unless absolutely necessary. Usually pilots just have to suck it up and make the crosswind landing on the main runway, which is fairly normal at ORD as you know. Alternatively, if traffic was super-light and separation allows, a pilot inbound for say 27C could request circling visually for a 22L arrival and the controller could clear that if the runway is open and no conflict results. Still not likely except in very unusual or special circumstances. I think you can see there could be no arriving aircraft inbound for 28L or 28C in that situation that are close enough to be a separation issue for a 22L lander. Next, the controller still has to have a backup plan if that 22L lander misses the approach. Other area airports (and their traffic) may not be configured to allow that. A 4-D chess game, right?

But since ORD is now committed strongly to E-W operations on six parallel runways, in winds acceptable for normal operations on the airport's main axis you'll rarely see arrivals now on 4L or 22L, which would be reserved only for extreme crosswind conditions from the north or south. The exception might be if a pilot requested a 22L landing in a light traffic condition and ATC could work it out without creating traffic conflicts, especially with 28L and 28C arrivals.
