The OPAG main reasoning was New Horizons would not likely improve the knowledge of the Kuiper Belt. New Horizons does have plans to make distant observations of KBOs and the outer planets. The OPAG noted New Horizons does not have the resources to conduct high cadence observations, pointing out there is still data from the Arrokoth encounter still on board the spacecraft.
Well that is extremely disappointing but thanks for the update all the same. I was really rooting for them to find another object to do a fly-by of. I won't write the mission off quite yet but I myself am not overly optimistic.
Put it in standby mode and only keep a skeleton crew, which they must've done since the previous encounter. Surely some KBO will be found in the next decade or so. If the RTG output doesn't decay drastically or the remaining hydrazine and helium doesn't boil off or something, the spacecraft should be fine to be awakened in a decade or so for another encounter. GL NH team 🤞
On the bright side New Horizon will give us some really useful data on solar wind, shock boundary, and extra-solar space. It is much newer than the voyager probes and will reach that region with more juice left.
I know $10m is a staggeringly large amount of money... but come on, the US government manages to piss away $1.7bn a year just maintaining over 75,000 vacant buildings. There's a federal building six blocks from the White House that's been vacant for over 30 years which I bet they could sell for $10m and then some in the middle of DC.
Since the war began, the current US administration and the U.S. Congress have directed more than $75 billion to Ukraine, according to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, a German research institute. 7500 years of New Horizons funding.
The last time I did the sums ( a couple of years ago), NASA's entire budget costs the typical American middle class family, the equivalent of 2.5 takeaway pizzas per year.
$10 million is drop in the bucket. I mean Techno Jesus just blew up a $200 million rocket, paid for by mostly tax payer money, and shrugged his shoulders and said "look at the data we got". Nevermind the defense budget. Even the amount we spend on gambling is in the hundreds of billions. Money is "wasted" everywhere. You'd think we could scrounge up enough for this mission. Of course this isn't the only mission and there's new ones that need to be funded too.
I still remember that whole story of what Stern had to do to get the damn thing into space in the first place. Why do they hate giving us good things!?!?
@@Jellyman1129 Politics is weird with space exploration, though. Sometimes tribalism is not so clear cut. Take the tale of the National Space Council. could New_Horizons, in combination with Gaia_L2 satellite and a big telescope on Earth, determine better parallaxes of difficultly to measure Giant Stars, like Beteigeuze? The large earth telescope or optical interferometer here would be needed, to simultaneously determine which part of the resolved disk of the star is shining the brightest. Getting really good measurements of Beteigeuze, which could go supernova, and a few other Giant Stars would be important in astronomy! The main difficulty for the Lorri telescope may be the huge brightness difference between Beteigeuze and the reference stars. Could this be overcome by shooting a series of different shutter_timings? I asked a similar question to Ulrich Bastian, a German astronomer, who is very specialist in the Gaia technics. So 3 - 4 synchronized measurements, half a year apart could give much better distance_measurement than obtainable without New Horizons.
Too bad backtracking in space is the worst way to spend fuel. Since NASA is instead planning to use the probe to study Uranus and Neptune from afar instead, it would have been nice if somehow, New Horizon can swing back into the inner solar system.
Hrm, I'd been kind of wondering what were the chances they'd find another object close to their course. Have they been using anything ground-based, or maybe like Webb or Hubble to spot for any?
The New Horizons team has been using the Subaru Telescope in Hawaii to look for other encounter targets. No luck so far. There were plans to use the LORRI telescope on New Horizons itself to search ahead of its flight path, but I have seen any news on that lately. The problem is NH's slow data rate. At 1.6 kB/sec, it takes a long time to downlink a image.
You're taking too long to find something that's barely there. Now we're going to make it harder to look, and blame you for not finding it. Sounds like bureaucrats to me.
I think this again proves that if you have to rely on a government agency to get its sh!t together you will be in for a dire disappointment. This truly sucks. The outer region is my favorite part of the solar system and one that needs a lot more love and attention. It's what brought me to ParallaxNick in the first place.
@@parallaxnick637 True. But if there is money to be made out there they will get us there a lot quicker then NASA. They stopped going to the moon 50 years ago.

What has that got to do with the price of fish? Unless you think a nation defending itself from an invader, intent on committing ever more war crimes and crimes against humanity, is somehow less worthy than a space craft? New Nick? Click video, click LIke, watch video, repeat 6 more times
As per SOP!
We need this guy to narrate a PBS special on ... something

"distant fragment of creation" is very poetic.
New Horizon will keep on keeping on,
just like the Voyagers, lo those many years ago
My favourite topic. Cheers nick, hope you are keeping well
I'll cross my fingers for the team.
Thanks, Nick, as I didn't know this was still a problem.
so happy Juice's Antennae was fixed :) now cant wait for Clipper and Dragonfly.
Thank you Nick. Your videos always grab the attention!
It seems like they should have spent 4 years looking for the Kuiper Belt objects in reach of NH when NH was on its way to Pluto and not after.
I figured. The Kuiper belt is pretty sparse out there!
New Horizons will still be flying long after we are all dust.

Inshallah. Possibly leave it there like a Monolith from A Space Odessy until the signal arrives and it awakens to perform it's mission. Nice thought.
Fantastic video! Thank you.
Hi nick, thanks for the news, your keen eye should post more of them!

I hope they find a suitable target, but time is simply not on their side. Still, the mission has been an outstanding success.
Venerable retirement or blaze of glory?
Only time, which on the cosmic scale, cares little for our attention or life span, will tell.
Thanks Nick
These shorter clips are a lot easier to fit in my schedule these days
Absolutely enjoy the news updates and insights.
I also hope they "strike gold."
On the other hand, Arrokoth is an epic end for any mission.

What do you mean, it's not like Star Wars? 😂
Why did they change the name from Ultimate Thule?
"Thule" has Nazi connotations, but they did name the two halves "Ultima" and "Thule."
Always love updates.

Hello fellow space nerds
One could easily raise 10 million dollars with a 'go fund me' type campaign. Just saying.
This is grate
when i saw those girls in the new horizon team photo instantly knew it isnt gonna fly.
But... it did.

There is no "creation". The physical world is all there is.

Money well spent. The furthest the Soviet space program got was Mars. Not eager to adopt that system.
Very disappointing.
