KEITH! I'm glad you heard it, I didn't want you to think I'd ripped you off. You're video was of course substantially superior to ours! I love all your videos!
@@Guitar-nerds Thanks Joe. I actually had a number of subscribers point it out to me. You're very kind. Did you see the most recent one on "When to Buy and When to Sell"? Folks seem to think I'm saying "Have very little" when I'm just saying "Do every wonder 'what is enough?" As you've seen in my vids, that's something I've wrestled with (past tense not completely appropriate likely) in my gear life. Thanks again.
imo Really good vid. I did Gibson's advertising in the mid-70s. The story the people at Gibson told me pretty much lines up with the story you present here perfectly. Luckily, I met Les Paul...hell of a good guy. As for my favorite Les Paul...I'm torn between the Standard and the Jr. But, tbh, I'm more of an SG fan. imo
The best Les Paul is the one you own. For me, it's my '03 studio in wine red with gold hardware with 490r and 498t pickups. It's beautiful, insanely playable and it sounds like heaven.
I have a GLP Tribute with P90's that I love to use for classic rock tones, and a GLP Tribute with humbuckers that I like for leads. They both sound killer.
@Myke Fuller Ask Alex Lifeson. His "Alex Lifeson" model has a "tummy cut" for this exact same reason. The PRS Tremonti guitar is shaped like a Les Paul but has a tummy cut. Leo Fender added a "tummy cut" to the Stratocaster because players were complaining the Telecaster was uncomfortable to play because it dug into their ribs. It's especially notable if you're sitting down, which one might do if one is recording guitar parts. PS - Don't google "tummy cut." The results can be unpleasant.
@Myke Fuller It's probably my posture. I have a tendency to not sit up straight when I'm playing in a seated position. If I sit up straight, you are right, it is not as much of an issue.
The one thing that I hear the most about the Les Paul is "it looks like a piece of art". With it's carved top and high gloss finish and chrome hardware reflecting rays of light the Les Paul is cosmetically the best looking guitar, IMO . The Strat can also be a beautiful instrument but with it's flat faced body it will never reach the same level of beauty as a Les Paul. The tones from a Les Paul are unique and it is this sound that defines the true sound of modern day classic rock. Eddie Van Halen said it best when asked about his Frankenstrat sound - " the first thing you have to do to get make it sound good is it to put a Gibson humbucker in the bridge position.". The debate of which guitar is THE best will never end because it is always based on personal opinion, for me it is and always will be the Les Paul.
On the 26th of this month 5 years ago my Les Paul GUITAR was born. It was only 3 months old when I purchased it "used". Imagine that, a used 2016 model. Long story short, I bought it, gave it a good set up using factory specs then tweaked it from there, this has to be the best Les Paul guitar I've ever owned. There's good and bad in everything but, IMHO, I'm thinking that 2016 was one of the best, if not THE best year for Gibson. Very pleased with this one, it's a keeper. NOT FOR SALE!!!
Because Les Paul was from Waukesha, WI the Discovery World museum (In Milwaukee) did an exhibit on him... I was lucky enough to be a docent for it. I got to meet him (the warmest and most friendly man you could ever meet) and hold The Log myself... it was almost religious until Les himself joked "Ain't much, right?"
Well the recording is a badass instrument that les himself played almost exclusively because of the low impedance pickups and the mic port on the top of the instrument so he could talk to the audience. Look it up its really cool
I have a few Orville (by Gibson), I love this MIJ-Guitars. They sound, feel and constructed better then every Gibson USA Standard. You habe to buy a Custom Shop one, to get the Sound und Quality.
the best les pauls i've played are the historic models but I will never buy one you get a tiny more for a big price tag! I have four les pauls and love them all
I've got a 1997/1998 (I forgot the serial number exactly) Standard with PAF pickups made by Bareknuckle Pickups. They're called "Mules". It's color is honey and it's amazing...also, I never play it cause its a fucking lp and I prefer to play my Eastwood Airline cause it's so light. What do you guys think of LP's? Are they too heavy? Also, how much would you be willing to pay for my guitar? Not for sale, but just wondering! I think the sticker price was 2200 about 10 years ago when I lived in Hawaii.
Best Les Paul I played was an incredibly fat necked junior that had 2 more P90s and a bigsby added. It was like a bastard strat but played way better on account of the fat neck.
I love my Les Paul Tribute. Great value for the money. I am sure that the standard and the custom are better but I cannot justify spending so much money as I only play at home for myself
Gibson didn’t drop the Les Paul in 1960, they completely redesigned it to compete with the Stratocaster which was killing it in sales. The new design was much thinner and lighter, had a double cutaway design that allowed the easiest upper fret access of any guitar, and moved the toggle switch down by the volume and tone knobs. Thus the 1961 “Les Paul” was born. But Les Paul was in the middle of a nasty divorce with his wife Mary Ford and didn’t want her to get half of his money from Gibson, so he asked them to stop using his name until after the divorce was finalized and the guitar was renamed the SG for “Solid Guitar.” By the time Les came back to Gibson after his divorce, the SG was their biggest selling model ever but the old design was proving popular too so they brought it back.
52 have no bridge problem, they have a wrong neck/body angle that make the bridge unusable, instead of 4 to 5.5 degree the neck it was let say 1 so the ungeneers decided to put the string the wrong way arround ( if they have had a tune o matic at that time it woudn't fit anyway with that neck angle ) The bridge made and pattend by les paul himself I doubt he said that it is a wrong bridge, and the les paul bridge works fine on es guitars from that period. Big misconception, the problem come from the first use of soapbar p90, they wanted it sitting to muchly low on the guitar! technically this bridge is a wraparound to fit hollowbody guitars, because of the thin top which canno't accomodate big studs
Les Paul tried to get Gibson to produce a solid body electric guitar in In 1945 or 1946, before Fender released the Telecaster. The prototype was known as The Log", and was made after-hours by Paul at the Epiphone guitar factor, more than a decade before Gibson would buy Epiphone.

Actually the first signature model was the Nick Lucas model. An avoustic guitar made by gibson in 1927

I reluctantly feel in love with my Les Paul Standard. It’s my workhorse that now feels like home.
I want one on the Strat next :)
The Gibson Les Paul is heavy, it digs into your ribs, it's costly, it's impractical, and I love both of mine very much.

Are you flexing bro? Haha literally trash talking your instruments to then say: i have two and I'm so happy. Hahaha. Fan boy

for me gibson stop using that bridge just that they can have a better image, it was for marketing purposes

"Mr. Gold Top" SNOWY WHITE !
missing is the part where Les Paul made a guitar out of a railway track and the time Les Paul used fender to get Gibson made his guitar.
Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols played a Gib'o L/P in white, surprised he didn't get a mention...? Great video nonetheless....
A guitar that Steve stole from David Bowie
