I just discovered that I've been playing saxophone wrong for the last 7 years, I was taught by someone who learnt originally on clarinet, they taught me to play sax with my bottom lip curled over my teeth, turns out you're meant to play sax with you're teeth on the reed, makes those high notes so much easier.
Both you're actually not meant to. Bottom lip all rolled up above teeth is uncommon and teeth on reed is as well not something you're meant to do. You can of course if that's your sound^^ but naturally you just let your lips be lips and try to not put any strength in it. But you can do whatever you want, that's why I love the saxophone so much ^.^
***** Ok, thanks. I've just spent the last week trying to get into the Altissimo range, I finally managed it by just letting the reed rest on my teeth, but then I found I could hit the G with my lip curled over after that, but thanks, I'm gonna have to have a play around and see what works best.
Lemony Melanie No, you don't HAVE to play with you're teeth on the reed but it is generally accepted as the better sax playing technique. I always play with my lip curled because I was originally taught by a clarinet player and it's a hard habit to break. Yeah, I saw in the comment section of one of his earlier videos that he plays mainly by ear, although transposing music from your favorite artists is always a good way to improve your playing by ear skills. It can also help you develop your phrasing and understand HOW he plays so that you can play more like him. Good Luck!
