I can point you in the direction of much better locations on the river calder around Wakefield, one of which skeletons of medieval knights were found nearby in 1823, the other is below the site of a 14th century manor house and a possible saxon castle.

Yea that’d be great, local knowledge is better than any research

@MagnetManMagnetics have you done anymore magnet fishing up allerton bywater? I'm thinking of doing up there myself and also maybe the beck that runs through allerton bywater and through kippax and garforth, my dad has found lots of plant fish and tree fossils in that beck in owl wood, plus there was the mining activity at owl wood.Years ago I found one of those old victorian clothes irons that you heated up,it was in perfect condition too,and made a wonderful door stopper for many years until someone stole it! Allerton bywater is my most favourite place for treasure hunting as I always find things around there.

@@PaulaSmith-vg9ez we tend to stick away from allerton, there’s a place we used to go to but I believe it’s all closed off now

I don't know how well you know Wakefield, the first location is where Portobello House used to stand at Portobello Estate. There's a public footpath at the end of Pugneys road, if you go through the trees here you'll find yourself next to the river and the beck which was built in 1823, I'd suggest trying the river there as it appears some of the soldiers/knights from the 1460 battle of Wakefield attempted to cross the river and escape the battle there. The second location is Horbury where the old ford is, to the right is the weir and just past this there was a 14th century manor house, i'm told part of the wall to this exists somewhere but I have never found it. a little further above the waterworks are allotments, this is known as castle hill and thought to be the site of Horsbury (Horbury) Castle, a Saxon fortification. anywhere along that stretch of river may turn up some interesting history.

Is there any groups in Wakefield or castleford area that get together to treasure hunt? I do it alone normally as i literally can't get anyone to do it with me,i don't know anyone who enjoys looking for history like i do,it would be nice to be able to share the excitement with like minded people instead of talking out loud to myself in the local woods when I find something cool!

@@PaulaSmith-vg9ez is it metal detecting you do or magnet fishing or a bit of both? Best person to ask for round that area is probably Roger of @magnetmadmumanddad! I’m sure he can point you in the right direction

I don't think there are any magnet fishing groups in the area but there is at least one metal detecting club, coil to the soil they're called. I'm a local historian and used to detect around the area upto a few yrs ago.

@definitiveverse thanks for that, I will look into those. Also,I don't suppose you would happen to know much about the old breffits glass works in castleford? More specifically where its actual location was as I can't find the exact location online, it just says somewhere on wheldon Road. I'm asking as my partner works at a haulage company on wheldon Road, and when he was digging at the back he has found the biggest chunk of glass slagg I've ever seen. It's a beautiful turquoise colour with loads of strange white bubbles all the way through and weighs a fair bit! I have it at home and will be showing the museum curator it soon. So maybe it was from breffits.

@@PaulaSmith-vg9ez I'm not sure on that one, there may be something on the Side by Side maps website, if you've not used it before it shows you old maps back to around 1841 with the modern view (or any type of layer you wish to use such as lidar, OS maps etc)

@MagnetManMagnetics I usually field walk,or magnet fish but I don't have a detector just yet.i was going to try and find out how to obtain permissions first. I have a victorian bottle dump which is also In my mums back garden.I seem to find really cool stuff everywhere mainly with eyes and no digging! Because I'm constantly looking on soil etc,my eyes can't help it. I have given quite a few bits to castleford museum years ago. Nothing amazing but they are to me I guess.
