- I have been seeing a ton of people making these DIY terracotta pumpkins out of faux plastic pumpkins. Of course I had to try it. I really enjoyed creating my own. I made the stem out of Iron Orchid Designs Air Dry Clay, you can find some on our website here markethousediy.com/collection...
Then I used Dixie Belle Mud in the color white to blend in where I attached the stem. After that I used equal parts paint (just plain old acrylic paint) and baking soda to create a textured paint paste. I painted my pumpkin with a few shades of orange and terracotta. Then I dusted one pumpkin with baking soda and another with flour. Let me know which one you like better.
Thanks for watching!

I make a stem from a branch from my yard. I realize it doesn’t, look like the pottery barn stem, but I like it better.
Yes I sometimes do this too and I think it looks good too. Just has a different style.
I stored several of my beautiful Halloween crafts that were made from air dry clay out in my shed. I live in Maine heat and cold weather literally breaks it down into dust. I was devastated. If you stored in a closet where it’s hot, it will break down to dust if you put it in a closet where it’s cold, it will break down to dust. It literally breaks down, even when I have it in the same temperature of my home with no heat or cold gets to it and it breaks so easy.I prefer baked clay last for years.
Thanks for the info. I have not had that trouble but I am going to research it a bit for future reference.
When I used flour, it started to go moldy after a while. I also tried unscented baby powder which worked great to mix into the paint and brush on the outside.
Thanks for the tips! And thanks for watching!
I put a wire in the stem, and a wipe in the air dry clay. Thank you for this video.
I will have to try a wire next time.
Are you going to paint the stems?
Yes I have painted some on video but I have several I made that I am still experimenting with painting techniques. Thanks so much for watching.
