  • First broadcast in 2006, 'Into Tomorrow' looks at the 30-year career of Paul Weller, who tells his own story with the input of those who know him.
Using unseen photos and archive footage, it covers his upbringing in Woking, his years with The Jam and The Style Council, his insecurity after being dropped by a record company and his return to popularity in the 1990s.

Everyone shouting for The Jam on here should remember that they are only so good in the memory because Weller stopped them at their peak. A great band but they would have become shit if Weller had toured those records for 30 years. Since then he has proven himself to be one of the greatest songwriters and singers this country ever produced!

Exactly, From the Jam is poor parody of the Jam . Always leave them wanting more is the reason The Jam will live forever with their quality back catalog.

I agree. As for them reforming (surely the passage of time has ensured there's no way it'll happen - if indeed there ever WAS a possibility), there can't be many bands that have got back together years after the split and still managed to create that spark. Better to be glad you were there to see them in their heyday than to be sorry it's gone.

john bowes Yes .When I was a homeless teenager (14-17) it was good to have folks like him around. Same with certain books. Now I'm able to lead myself fairly well.
I won't stoop as low as you have and be unnecessarily offensive in return. After all, what kind of person needs to take a positive comment and find something in it with which to attack another individual?

I love hearing Paul talk. He's the real thing. There's no boundaries with this man. He has a real mystical quality to his tone, otherworldly but definitely grounded...a true artist. He's the Mod William Blake.

What an incredible talent Weller is,at every stage of his career.I think he is courageous, humorous and is not afraid to re-invent himself. One of the best songwriters of our time, his songs are timeless. He has style and attitude.Fascinated by this documentary. He is a true working class hero and an inspiration to everyone of my generation. What a soul and spirit! He encapsulates the times he was writing about..Thanks for making this video!

Weller , what a talent....can't help feeling that Paul, Rick and Bruce were born to play together....Don't think Paul's ever hit that high together with anyone else playing live !....Very creative guy though !....Oh and Paul it only matters what your friends and family think of you...they're the ones that matter when you're talking about love !

Fantastic I seen the Jam I think it was 1982 in Berlin whilst I was in the Army with the old Iron Curtain (Berlin Wall) still up. It was then that I decided I wanted to play the guitar thanks to Mr PW just seen him recently in Carlisle at the Sands wonderful to have such an iconic tallented musician still entertaing. Thank you so very much.

Modernism A new decade turned out to be one of the best albums ive ever heard. Even in 2017 it sounds new and fresh. what were people thinking showing discontent at the Royal Albert Hall in 1989. I would've given my right arm to be at that gig.

thanks very much for uploading, i got a great insight into the man and, being a fan of his music, it helped me decide what i felt of him as a person. i have to say, i admire him much more - that footage of him in 91 playing Town Called Malice to two men and a dog, with his baggy-grunge outfit on - to pull himself from there back to the top, i salute him.
but i like him a lot less than i did. a lot to admire, very little to like. he's charmless, unbelievably serious and very precious and self-absorbed. i couldn't warm to him at all.
we heard about the great sense of humour he has, but the couple of examples he just came across as a tosser. he gave no credit to Dee C. Lee for more or less keeping him sane for 3 or 4 years, while he moaned about being yesterdays man, and couldn't show any enthusiasm for his period as a family man, he obviously hated it. he had virtually nothing to say about their break up. just me me me. but as an artist i admire him.

I get what you're saying but, this documentary is more about his music career than his personal life. And, to be fair, he did acknowledge that his behaviour, which led to the split with Dee, was inexcusable.

When bitterest pill came out,I personally thought,"Yeh it's time we grew up,and who better to grow older with than the man himself" we all grew with him at 15 why not die listening to him at 97 So fuck it ,I'm Weller ,I've always been Weller you can Fuckin Bury me Weller. Alot of Jaz, Soul and French influence at that period of time. Did get a pit more pop though later.

For a start, TSC were not 'disco'. You may not like them, but so what? Weller had the balls to do what he believed in despite potentially losing a massive audience. I wish more musicians were as honest. I don't like Scott Walkers' new material but I LOVE the fact he writes from his heart and not with his wallet in mind.

Paul Weller Isn't Just The Mod-Father, He Is A Game-Changer, So Is Everyone Else That's Been Members Of The Various Bands That's Been Involved Equally. His Labour Party Preferences Have Had An Equal Effect On Me Being A Labour Supporter; I Come From A Family That's Working Class. Life, Being Brought Up Was Fun Though. Love Comes Naturally From The Heart, FIRST. Money Is A Material. Sod The Tory Tossers'. They're Totally Ignorant Of Us Ordinary Working Class People. I Have So Much Admiration For These Great Musicians', The Members Of All The Bands The Mod-Father Has Been In. It's No Tragedy To Be Ordinary Working Class, Inspired By These Great Musicians. I've Been Making My Own Music For A Couple Of Years Now. I've Got A Brain Tumour. It's Made Me Want To Make The Most Of Life. That's Still Humble, Working Class, And Poor By Money Standards, NOT By Creativity With Making My Own Music. This Man Inspires Many People, Equally. Love Your Family, And Friends As People. We Only Have One Life. Music Is Therapeutic. This Man Is A Great , Ordinary, Inspiring Soul. Paul Weller Is The Mod-Father. He Is Also One Of The Very Best Individuals In Music, And Everyone Else Involved Equally, With The Music That Keeps Us Ordinarily Happy...

Hey, I never said SC was good, esp. that last record. But he did what he wanted to do. What he wanted to do wasn't well received and flopped. Oh well, he dusted himself off, grew up a bit, and moved on. He's not spending his middle years rehashing stuff from 30 years ago and for that I can only applaud him. I don't like all of the stuff he's come out with since the breakup of the Jam, but I respect him enough to give it a listen and say, "nope, not for me," if I think it's crap.

The Style Council was fucking hateful! Absolutely exemplified by a track like "Long Hot Summer" which is still nauseating now. Fair play to the man though, as he says himself on this film, he *wanted* to rub some people up the wrong way and he succeeded. Whatever your own personal taste, you have to respect anyone who's focused and single minded enough to pursue their own dreams and fuck anyone that doesn't like it, so hats off to the man when all's said and done.
