The electric Porsche 928 has lost POWER. What have I broken? (Ep.38)

- THE ELECTRIC PORSCHE 928 EV8 project continues .. as slowly as ever.
I struggle to find why the car has a little power, then loses power, then has virtually nothing. Matt fabricates some nice cooling systems. And then .. a happy ending.

As much as I would love to see this project finished I simply love to watch to process 🙌🏻
I'm getting impatient...
Nice to see the project rocketing forward Stu 🙂
Really, really appreciate how you are sharing the problems with everyone else so that they don't end up with dramas that could be showstoppers for home builders . It's a fantastic video series.
Paint . As we all know, quick paint jobs turn into more much expensive jobs once the paint comes off and you have to fix more than you expected . It looks like a pretty decent 50 footer in the video so if it was up to me, I would fix absolutely everything else first so that it is 100% reliable and comfortable and that you could drive it across country . I'd rather a complete interior, heater, a/c etc before I worried about the paint . It would look great painted up though.
Thanks. Last time I painted a car I did it myself as a teenager. Over 50 years ago. I did a pretty crap job too. All up I think it cost $200, including the electric gun. Prices have probably increased a little.
Great stuff! Can’t wait to record what the 0-100 time is.
Congratulations on this new milestone 👍😃
Fantastic! Thought you might even get a bit of wheel spin, but I suppose the chassis / wider wheels are more capable of putting it down than the MG.
The problem if you soda blast it for 3k is you'll still have to spend 10-20k painting it again, unless you're DIYing it.. after a recent 30k all-up estimate for my (fully stripped) '87 Saab 900 Aero I've certainly been considering applying myself..! By far the most expensive part of restoration.
Thanks. 928 rear suspension is such a good design and they squat so nicely that wheelspin is unlikely on any reasonable surface. And the MG is no powerhouse.
I'll investigate my race-car friends for spray-painters. I'll ask the guys that tend to bang panels with each other frequently. The more frequent the collisions, the cheaper their spray painters tend to be. Not looking for a concourse job. Not even a 90% job. The rest of the car won't match it.
Great work, Stu!
Goes like a rocket.
Thing actually goes. Gold 👍
Another great episode and even a glimour of many turtles pushing the car along to give hope
I'm leaning to the 17's looking better with the brakes filling them better and surely a more comfy ride
We seem to have same issue of our noggins finding things to bump into
Looking forward to next episode
With all the custom fitment of batteries, electric engines etc do you think you will have lowered the centre of gravity?
Occurs to me that on a GT style car having a lowered centre gravity combined with the extra power from electric might make it even more enjoyable to drive on sweeping corners. Sure it will never be a scalpel but the 928 was not a scalpel to begin with but with solid distribution of weight with a lower centre of gravity it could well have some upside in the right conditions?
I hadn't thought much about that but probably not a lot. If I had left the batteries under the floor, certainly. But I repackaged them where the V8 used to be, in pretty much the same position. I think COG will be close to a standard V8 - both height-wise and fore-aft. Also I think my 19" wheels may not be any better than the original 16" or 17" these cars came with, in regard to responsiveness. Despite being a Porsche factory item and 40 years younger, they are significantly heavier.
My Tesla rear brakes are very different. Just one caliper.
Don't suppose you'll be dragging it down to the Everything Electric show in March by any chance ?
I'd be ashamed to show it at the moment. Have to get it looking a lot smarter first.
Don’t bother with the paint. It’ll always be a project so a 10 ft car is good enough
I would have put money on the cooling system as the limiitation. (My current problem) What was the phone app that you used?
Cooling system now complete (next episode). It may have been a factor but no evidence yet. Maybe when I get the car up to temp with some proper trials. The app is "Car Scanner ELM OBD2" from Stanislav Svistunov. Free on the App Store. White icon, blue background.
I’d spend the paint money on power train v2.0
