In a democracy, the head of government should only serve for so long. In many presidential systems, the chief executive is term limited (US, France, Mexico, and many others). However, in parliamentary systems, a prime minister, like Ardern or Sturgeon, is not term limited but custom usually dictates how long a PM should serve. These women may attribute their departures to burnout but I think it's healthy for a democracy to have new leadership.
There is NO custom dictating how long a prime minister serves. Prime ministers in Canada have been in office for weeks or decades. The PM serves at His Majesty's pleasure; in other words, for as long as he commands the confidence of the elected house of parliament. That's it. There's nothing more to it.
I think giving 8 years of your life to a job that takes a toll on a person both physically and emotionally and then stepping down when it's time denotes a person of courage and character. Well done, Nicola Sturgeon!
