3D Printed Hole custom feature demo

- For 3D printing parts without support material, there are a number of tricks and rules of thumb one can follow. This custom feature that Evan wrote for Onshape automates creation of a common hole style used in 3D printing.

I hope you keep making tools and videos like this! I've seen a lot of 3D printing channels talk about adding this to holes, and I've never done it because it seems like a pain... but you just made it oh so easy. Please keep going at this. I hope you get lots of success from it! THANK YOU!
I mean, same here. Having a tool for it makes it so much more likely that I'll actually do it.
Incredible. This should be part of Onshape!
Thanks! I know we'll use it. Honestly, I'm glad that not every niche feature has to be part of the native feature set. Onshape was pretty clever to create FeatureScript so that this feature essentially now IS a part of Onshape, but only for those who want it to be.
@@ovyl yeah, I agree it is a clever way to keep Onshape’s core lean, which is super important, and I support it. Nothing worse than a bloated platform.
It just seems a bit ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ that there’s an overabundance of traditional “hard” holes built in, but there is nothing for FDM, even in 2022. I do understand where Onshape is coming from, and FDM is typically a hobbyist tech. But I would have thought many pros would get a lot of use out of FDM features, especially combined with config toggles (thanks for that vid btw!)
But if OS doesn’t want to bundle more holes, I would love to see them provide a way to add them “officially”, like an API hook. This excellent work deserves to feel more like a first class citizen imo!
@@aaaidan Yeah that's an interesting point. Most of the native hole functionality seems geared toward machining, but the use of 3D printed holes might overtake that someday.
I was just thinking about something like this a few days ago, and by chance I find your video on Reddit. Great tool, liked and subscribed.
nice! I'm glad you're into it. I've wanted this feature for a while now, and it's just awesome that Onshape makes it possible to write it.
Brilliant!
Thanks!
Wow 🎉
very cool tool!! but what a missed oportunity to have your cam video have a drop shape instead of a circle...
True! It would sure print better that way
Wow! I am definitely adding this right now. Similar idea: if a vertical hole starts in a bridge, first print one strip on either side in the direction of the bridge, then a strip perpendicular to that, then the hole. I forget where I first saw this, but I hope you understand. This is something I have found myself adding manually after using your amazing captive nut tool. Maybe it would be a neat thing to add here or in the captive nut tool itself.
I know exactly what you're talking about. I actually made a Bridge Layer custom feature, but it's simpler than that. It just does one layer over the hole and you can zip it out by twisting an X-acto after printing. Your way requires that the feature be a lot more in touch with the layer height and bed location, but it could be a great challenge for me on a future project. I could add it to the Bridge Layer feature eventually. Here's the link to Bridge Layer: ovyl.onshape.com/documents/616d3e9c84d8b289a142a461/v/cbed987d51fa7f3a18ee5649/e/584696c538b6005819e90c4d
@@ovyl Oh cool. I've seen that trick before too. Didn't know you had a feature for it though! Do you have any other features I should know about? :P
Thank you so much for this! It worked on the first try. Really awesome!
Glad to hear it!
Thanks, this will be useful
Sure hope so! I'd love to see models people have used it on.
Perfect, thanks!
You're welcome!
Really enjoying your very useful videos, and your very lucid explanations. I'm starting to teach myself Featurescript, so I hope you will do more on the basics of FS. Thanks for your eff.
That means a lot. I really strive for clarity without much fluff. I have some FS crash course ideas in the backlog, but making time to create them is another thing.
