    As a German I see a huge difference between using the phrase I love you- ich liebe dich, and I have Love for you- ich hab dich lieb. The latter one is much more casual and used for friends and family, while saying that you love someone is reserved for your partner/spouse.

    Why is Nathan like a little insufferable? This is my first time hearing him and listening to him and like his questions for the most part are okay but like sometimes his comments are very pompous? I’m referring to his comments on short form content and like not reading anything but non-fiction. I feel like it came across as just im better than you and less of an opinion. Not trying to like spread hate but honestly the vibe just hit me wrong. Like you’re criticizing Jacks entire brand? Which is mostly fiction and short form content. Idk just an opinion

    • @jejo63660
      @jejo63660 Год назад

      Not sure about the fiction vs nonfiction part but i don’t really think Nathan truly has something against Jack’s short form content. Jack’s main channel’s videos are longer than Nathan’s; Nathan has more ‘short-form’ content than Jack does on RUclips.

    • @thesadbookgirly
      @thesadbookgirly Год назад

      @@jejo63660 I think your perception is just different. the entire conversation they have in this video is what is insufferable to me. If he didn’t mean to come off like he had a problem it didn’t work. Because it almost seems like when someone gives a backhanded compliment. And jacks videos are notoriously under like 10 minutes most of the time. And all Nathan did was criticize short form content. Actively. So I understand that is not what you garnered from the video but there was clear sense of praising non-fiction over fiction and like praising long form content, like documentary and interview style videos.

    Native German speaker here: it‘s kinda true what you said about Liebe. you don‘t say „Ich liebe dich“ to just anyone. If you do, it‘s a big deal. But, if you like something a lot, younger people also say „Ich lieb‘s“, which is an abbreviated version of „I love it“. So in a romantic sense, Liebe is kind of a big word, but in terms of liking something it does get used more and more often, typically by younger people.

    I enjoyed listening to this pod, though I completely disagree with the short-form content, especially on RUclips. I am not a fan. It clogs up my YoyTube feed and offers no value, at least not in my opinion. Just like I enjoy reading books to get to know characters or places, I prefer thoughtful in-depth interviews because of the interplay between the two people. I love to learn. I also find short-form produces more questions and a desire for more information, though I am not as likely to search out the answers.

      He did the same with study tube… they were and still are study tubers who have done this longer and also more successful than him. I also have a problem when people claim that he’s so charismatic and funny and that is why he is so successful when it comes to booktube now. But we have to consider that he’s a white straight man. A lot of booktubers are women, queer people and people of color. They are also incredibly funny and charismatic but why does he have 10 times the following as some of those creators? Bc the algorithm prefers people like him and also a lot of people (knowingly or not) do prefer people like him. Also age definitely plays a role in it. If he would be 10 years older he wouldn’t have the success that he has now

    Thank you both for referencing how the education system can ruin the love of reading. It certainly did for me - being told to read a particular book and then read only from page x to page y and then there will be a quiz. I can only remember 1 book I really enjoyed in high school (in the mid 70s) and that was The Grapes of Wrath. We were assigned to read this over Christmas break and I put it off until the last 2 days of break and then binged on it. These days there would be outrage from assigning a book like that over break. I know this as I was a HS science teacher and heard about the tirades other teachers received from parents when the teacher only suggested a study plan for science class that could be done over the Christmas break. Fortunately in retirement I have found a book club with lifelong readers who open up authors and genres new to me., along with Booktube creators like Jack, of course.

    German here - I don't think that we have more words to describe the different stages between like and love - it's just that we don't use Liebe as much. I think for most people it's reserved for the highest form of feeling love, mostly for a romantic partner. I remember how odd I found it that english speaking kids would tell their parents 'i love you' - I would never tell my parents 'Ich liebe dich', but more like 'Ich habe dich lieb' which could be translated as I like you very much or I care for you. But even then, I guess, we're still germans and not really prone to verbalizing emotions in general so that might play into it as well. Hope my gibberish makes sense. :)

    Regarding the comment on the difference between using the word 'love' in English and German: I think it largely stems from the fact that you don't say 'I love you in German' to literally anyone other than your romantic partner. You would tell other people 'you are important to me' or 'Ich hab dich lieb' which literally would translate to "I have you love" (it doesn't really work in English). But because the declaration of loving someone is rarely used, I think we also translate this to things and items. We would say 'this is great' 'I really like this' 'this is my favourite', but not 'I love it'.
    Fun fact: the literal translation of 'being in love with someone' - 'verliebt', actually holds much less value in German, than in English. Its more like having a crush on someone. That sometimes leads to very interesting dubbing problems in TV shows from the UK/US.. when the translators weren't quite aware of the different meaning abroad

    Could listen for hours! Would you two consider making a video together where you both read short stories or poetry, but Nathaniel reads it in different languages and idk analyzing how it’s different??

    Thanks for this interview. 🥰

    What an awesome conversation, great questions and great answers!
    It’s so interesting how Jack was able to find the right way to pivot his content in order to grow. I see multiple study youtubers who now struggle with losing views even though a few years ago their channels were bigger than Jack’s. It’s like they’re stuck.

    This is totally off topic but, in defense of TikTok, I think it depends on what "side" of the app you find yourself on. There are meaningful conversations and relationships being built there but it's a different flavor from RUclips. I think the stitches and the duets allow more voices to be added to the conversations being had and it adds to the nuance. I've noticed that especially since the length of videos have increased. I've learned a lot about media literacy (oddly enough) from interacting with the way news circulates there. In the end, I think it's valuable but not for the same things you'd turn to something like a RUclips video for. TikTok is a jumping off point for a lot of topics. It gives you a direction to go in research and it might fill in some tiny holes but I don't think it's something you should turn to for every take ever.
    I hope that made sense lol. I loved this whole conversation! You two are a breath of fresh air :)

    I'm sorry, but you completely misrepresented Murakami and that interview. It was not a question about a teenage student boy, it was how a woman saw herself. She had prefaced this with how compelling and accurate his female characters are in other works.
