I think the Cult eating people wasn't really the big moral issue. The reason for that is I don't think they were killing people specifically to eat them, I think they were using people who died to then eat, which in my view is morally fine if there are no other sources of food. If you have a couple dead people at your disposal it would absolutely make sense to ration out the meat and therefor store any bodies you don't immediately need. Story-wise I think it works to have them eat people because it adds this creepy vibe to them. They won't just kill you, they'll chop you up and stick you in a nice little stew. Having the main antagonist be very groomer-esque and violent adds more force to that threat. But, in terms of presenting a moral question I don't think eating people is really much of one. I don't think they were needlessly killing people to fuel their meat source, and I don't think they weren't trying to find alternatives as best as they could so in my mind eating people who died naturally (or by other people like Joel) is fine under these circumstances. I think the most interesting things in this episode are Ellie's escalating violent tendencies and Joel's walls coming down more and more, it feels like we're either at the end or very close to the end of Joel accepting Ellie as a daughter-like figure who he would do anything for. We've already seen Ellie's violent tendencies get hinted at here and there, but she really fucking went to town on this guy and of course it was visible throughout the episode as well, the main antagonist himself mentioned how he sees violence in her. In a way Ellie is being infected by violence and other just generally bad things happening around her.
I think the group is killing peoplle to get the meat. Remember in episode 6 where Hannah's father strike Joel? He went for the kill and I think it was because they don't want to kill their own member to get meat. It is another matter with Hannah's father died by Joel and chopped into meat to be eaten by the group. So I think if someone from the group died by accident or natural course of old age or some other reason, they would still eat the meat. That is really creepy
But on the fun part, you see Buddy Boy James there beside David, he is Troy Baker, the voice actor of the real Joel in the game. So when Ellie struck him with the cleaver right in the neck, someone said Ellie kills Joel. 🤣
Remember when they said “we can bury your dad until the spring” it’s because they were using his dead body for food since they didn’t have food. Also when the guy in the kitchen brought in the meat and the girl questioned it and he said “it’s venison” all sketchy. and then David then brings in the deer a few seconds later not all cut up. They were dropping hints all throughout the episode
That dead horse was Ellie's horse they shot, but remember before they got the horse and her deer they had no food and that's when they resort to eating people (what they called rations). Those dead people stored in there were probably stored there for desperate times, as insurance in case they had no other food. Still doesn't justify that they were feeding the community humans w/o their knowledge and probably letting that girl eat her dad without her knowing (the way David smirked when he saw her eating implied it)

Extremely doubtful that HBO will give up on this show after just 2 seasons when they literally have a 5 year time jump between the games. They can literally have a few more seasons of the “Joel and Ellie show” before getting into part 2 of the game. It’s just silly to think they’ll end an extremely popular series at a time when they’re struggling with content.
Let me clarify the creepyness of this group, remember the meal scene after David struck Hannah? They all eat with such a hurry due to hunger, but as far as I know they are eating human meat. Much to remember it most likely is Hannah's Dad 's meat. Imagine David saying, "well, your G is providing us food through your dad's meat after he died." That is crazy... 😭
There's actually a second game, so the next one or two seasons will be about that. Yeah, the finale is going to be... Interesting, and the same can be said for the second season. You are in for a ride :)
