Hey! Thanks so much for playing & reviewing, Jim Reeves', "He'll Have To Go". My dad introduced me country music at a very young age & whenever we were out anywhere that had a jukebox he'd give me 25 cents, because in the 1960's you got 1 song for a dime or 3 selections for 25 cents. My dad would tell to go find this song & play it. So, this taught me how to listen to the story & I always wondered how it turned out for the guy on the phone? Yes, Jim Reeves is smiling at the end of the song. Well, that's what all the entertainers did back in the day. They got dressed up in a suit & tie & always smiled for the audience even if they were singing a gut-wrenching song.
I had just graduated from high school in 1964 and Jim Reeves' funeral was only one hour from where I lived so of course I went - so did thousands of other Jim Reeves fans. Went to see him at the Louisiana Hayride when I was a kid.
Jim Reeves had the smoothest voice. This was a crossover hit on the Country and Rock and Roll charts. Probably his most known song. He sings some beautiful gospel songs.
I remember Jim Reeves well. Such a loss when he died. This song has a special place in my heart. I used to sing this to my late wife every time I called her before we were married, not because I thought there was someone else there, but for the opening 2 lines. It is so Ironic that I was singing this last night and was going to ask you to play it. If you want to know how it turned out, you'll have to listen to the sequal by Jeanne Black titled "He'll have to stay."
First remember hearing it my Mom's dining room on her old stereo. When he sings the line "down low", wow, I was hooked on that voice. As important as a good song, is with Jim, that was it. It was The Voice.

His music is the best God bless his heart There is much more to it than what one knows Love all his songs You can listen to them hours on end
There’s a group that does a medley of He’ll Have to go, Hello Walls & Hello Darlin’ they are called Lester “Roadhog” Moran & The Cadillac Cowboys. They are the greatest Country vocal group ever.
Jim Reeves left in an airplane from my hometown in 1964 and his plane crashed later in TN killing him. So much talent killed in plane crashes in those days, Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, Patsy Cline, Jim Reeves, then later to Jim Croce & Lynard Skynard band members. This is such a smooth song. He was truly talented.
He had such a smooth voice. Growing up I would often listen to a gospel tape of his that we had. His version of In The Garden and Whispering Hope were simply amazing.
I haven't heard this for a long time. The way you throw you headphone cord behind you reminds me of a super-hero throwing their cape behind them, lol. Thanks for posting. Love and hugs for all~stay safe!
Such a distinctive voice. Grew up hearing him and he's got many classics but my mothers favourite Jim Reeves song is 'I've enjoyed as much of this as I can stand'.
What a voice that man had! I just looked up the writers of this song - Audrey and Joe Allison. I'm not familiar with them. Love 4 Walls, too. I also got thinking about Ricky Van Shelton and Ray Price. Both had such smooth voices, but were still considered country music singers.
Jeanne Black replied to this song with "He'll have to stay". My personal favorite of his was "Welcome to my World", just beautiful! I remember listening to him on my "transistor radio".........Yep! I'm an old B**********
Such a dreamlike quality to the vocals and overall arrangement. I love these old songs. Reminds me a bit of Four in the Morning by Faron Young, would be a good one to react to if you get the notion. Love the videos!
My grandpa plays the guitar. When we were young he would play all of the oldies. This was one of them. Jim Reeves reminds me of him. He also played alot of Kingston Trio. Desert peet is an all time favorite!
We all know there are a lot of stellar voices out there in any genre of music, but I honestly have to rate the voice of the late Jim Reeves as perhaps the best there ever was. His voice is like that of butter melting in your heart. He's yet another great artist the world lost all too soon at the ripe age of 40.
The song that messed with my mind when I first heard it as a kid was "Blizzard". I kept wanting to rewrite the ending in my own head because I just didn't want to accept the ending of the song. I still love it though and of course "Four Walls" is great as is "Blue Side of Lonesome" where he mentions a place that is so lonely and sad that "someone broke the bar mirror with only the ghost of a smile".
My mother bought album after album and this is what I grew up on. Now I have all her albums and Jim sings on 8 tracks and cassettes and CDs and my RUclips playlist. You should try The Blizzard or The Shifting Whispering Sands for a good story. Or there's Dark Water or Teardrops On The Rocks for more heartache. Or........

Great request. Another song that reminds me of my dad. He played this with so many others. When I was 6 years old my mom would hold her breath when I was asked to sing.
