Now that I see the map, I realized how complicated the war was. I was surprised to see no real invasion into North Vietnam. The South and Allies were forced into defending/retaking the south the entire time. Not only that, but majority of attacks came from Laos and Cambodia. A country which the USA couldn't just simply invade and gain ground, but instead dropped 1000s of bombs on. The enemy were locals living in the same neighborhood. There was no frontline basically. No ground to gain. Only ground to lose and try to retake. It's no wonder the Vietnamese won. They literally used our rules and politics against the US and Allies - well done.

The NVA and Charlie were helping the Khmer Rouge during the Second Indochina war. Who do you think the US was bombing in Cambodia for all those years? I'm not going to defend everything that all the Anti communists and the US did during that war, but you made it sound like the US helped them rise to power or something. Again all the Anti communist forces in the region were backed by the US, and all the the Communist, including Pol Pot were all fighting on the same side with backing from China. It was only until Pol Pot became a little too crazy in 1979 and tried to launch cross border attacks into Vietnam, that the Vietnamese actually did anything.

As a Vietnamese I love this animation as it tells exactly what is happening in south Vietnam. Although the South suffer fewer casualties if you look at the map it actually shows how messed up the situation is for them.

Note that in the Tet offensive, the decisive battle which won the war for the Vietnamese, the faction which suffered most was the Viet Cong. So the people who sacrificed most to ensure America's defeat were South Vietnamese, the very people for whom America claimed to be fighting.
The Tet offensive didn't actually achieve anything more than inflicting heavy casualties on both sides, especially for the North Vietnam. And yes, the Viet Cong was extensively used by North Vietnam in the offensive, so much so that the VC was almost entirely destroyed, which meant that the Viet Cong wasn't used for any major attack after the Tet offensive.

The USA won every military battle in the war. They even successfully defended the South all the way up to the Paris Peace Accords which were supposed to end the war. After everyone signed the peace treaty, the USA went home. 2 years later, the North invaded the South and the USA refused to get involved again. The only way the North Vietnam could win was by breaking a peace treaty and invading only when the USA wasn’t there anymore. The US Military hasn't won a war against an equal since 1865. Sorry, Spain, Panama and Grenada don't count. In WWII the US never faced more than 25% of the Japanese Army.The Japanese Navy while powerful was only a bit larger and except for Carriers was about as capable as the Italian navy. The Japanese economy was only slightly larger than Italy's. The great bulk of the Japanese Army was in China and Manchuria and we never faced that army. When the time came the Red Army annihilated the Japanese Army of over 1.5M in Manchuria in 10 days. In Europe The US and Uk never fielded more than 20% as many soldier as the Soviets did and the Red army accounted for 85% of all German losses. The US Military is first a profit generating project for the Military Industrial Complex and as distant second, a jobs program for the otherwise unemployable.
Fun fact, the goal of the US was to repel the North Vietnamese invasion and garrison South Vietnam. Saying the US lost is a falsity because we did what we went there to do. By 1973 North Vietnam had gotten it's ass kicked so hard that the Paris Accords were signed ending the war and then the US pulled out. Two entire years later North Vietnam invaded again, and since President Nixon resigned, President Carter had been sworn into office and he refused a second war.

Laos is technically a vassal of the vietnamese throughout much of the cold war, even now Laos still works with vietnam on a very close governmental and military level.
My great uncle was a corpsman in Vietnam, i can only imagine all the bullet holes he had to patch up or the blown off limbs he had to see or the Marines he tried to save but ended up dying, leaving him to wonder...could he have saved them? After the war he became an alcoholic and just sort of stopped talking to people all together.

Despite my Grandfather fighting in this war, I really don't know much of anything about it. I know it's a bit of a meme to bash on the USA for losing to a bunch of rice farmers, but is that actually just what happened? I find it crazy that they bombed them like hell yet still got destroyed.
Relatively speaking, yeah both sides did a damn good job of beating the shit out of each other. The VC actually mostly avoided fighting the American forces and tried to hit the SV forces since they were much weaker and losing the war before the intervention. Taken side by side, the US did alot of damage to the VC that the Americans didn't really recieve back. But numbers don't tell the whole story when it comes to Vietnam. The US forces were being used politically, so they were never going to be able to do their job. Then there's the draft issue too. Most US forces were pressed into serving, while the VC were entirely motivated by seeing another foreign aggressor in their land. Massacres were actually relatively rare in this war but when they did occur it was highlighted. TL;DR This war shows how you cannot win a war simply by fighting better.

US props up South Vietnam economically and politically to prevent Communism spreading (see Domino Theory) . The US used a false pretext to intervene militarily (see Gulf of Tonkin) in ~'65. JFK sends limited number of troops over, gets assassinated. LBJ begins to escalate war, implements the draft. Vietnam War drags on. Tet Offensive turns US public opinion heavily against Vietnam War. LBJ resigns after 1st term. Nixon gets elected under pretext of ending the war. He secretly escalates and also sends the military into Cambodia while simultaneously deciding to withdraw US military under "Vietnamization" by handing security to South Vietnamese. When the US leaves, the South Vietnamese army collapses for a number of reasons. Decades later Robert McNamara realizes that the Vietnamese weren't fighting for Communism, but independence (see The Fog of War). Numerous atrocities occurred leaving millions of Vietnamese dead. US becomes gun-shy until The Gulf War in '91. Vietnam ends up being friendly to the US anyways. Lots of books if you want to know more.
Read robin old's book. It just makes you wanna punch whoever was in charge in the teeth. But it doesn't really matter, the south had so many problems it was inevitable
there's also the fact that the US military was grossly inadequate in eliminating the Viet Cong. the main go-to way of killing the Viet Cong was to send out patrols and use soldiers like bait in order to lure in enemy soldiers. after finding the enemy, often times on the wrong end of an ambush and after usually taking heavy casualties, US soldiers would call bombers into the area which usually took maybe 10 minutes, just enough time for the Viet Cong to escape into the jungle or into the infamous Cu Chi tunnels. and even though the Viet Cong still suffered a huge death toll it was still relatively effective considering superior US weapons and resources. the general population of Vietnam too was pretty much anti-US all around due to a number of reasons.

It would reflect the war better if you add battle icons (like in the tet-offensive), showing combat in as many areas as it is possible to trace. Many fights ended in stalemates and territorial occupations used to be too short to be properly displayed.

As a Vietnamese I love this animation as it tells exactly what is happening in south Vietnam. Although the South suffer fewer casualties if you look at the map it actually shows how messed up the situation is for them.

Note that in the Tet offensive, the decisive battle which won the war for the Vietnamese, the faction which suffered most was the Viet Cong. So the people who sacrificed most to ensure America's defeat were South Vietnamese, the very people for whom America claimed to be fighting.
It shook US morale so bad that they didn't recover. The war was vastly unpopular then.
The NVA lost that battle though but they won it politically
The Tet offensive didn't actually achieve anything more than inflicting heavy casualties on both sides, especially for the North Vietnam. And yes, the Viet Cong was extensively used by North Vietnam in the offensive, so much so that the VC was almost entirely destroyed, which meant that the Viet Cong wasn't used for any major attack after the Tet offensive.

After everyone signed the peace treaty, the USA went home. 2 years later, the North invaded the South and the USA refused to get involved again. The only way the North Vietnam could win was by breaking a peace treaty and invading only when the USA wasn’t there anymore.

The US Military hasn't won a war against an equal since 1865. Sorry, Spain, Panama and Grenada don't count. In WWII the US never faced more than 25% of the Japanese Army.The Japanese Navy while powerful was only a bit larger and except for Carriers was about as capable as the Italian navy. The Japanese economy was only slightly larger than Italy's. The great bulk of the Japanese Army was in China and Manchuria and we never faced that army. When the time came the Red Army annihilated the Japanese Army of over 1.5M in Manchuria in 10 days. In Europe The US and Uk never fielded more than 20% as many soldier as the Soviets did and the Red army accounted for 85% of all German losses. The US Military is first a profit generating project for the Military Industrial Complex and as distant second, a jobs program for the otherwise unemployable.
Fun fact, the goal of the US was to repel the North Vietnamese invasion and garrison South Vietnam. Saying the US lost is a falsity because we did what we went there to do. By 1973 North Vietnam had gotten it's ass kicked so hard that the Paris Accords were signed ending the war and then the US pulled out. Two entire years later North Vietnam invaded again, and since President Nixon resigned, President Carter had been sworn into office and he refused a second war.

My great uncle was a corpsman in Vietnam, i can only imagine all the bullet holes he had to patch up or the blown off limbs he had to see or the Marines he tried to save but ended up dying, leaving him to wonder...could he have saved them? After the war he became an alcoholic and just sort of stopped talking to people all together.

The Vietnamese communists got allot of shit done in Indochina; pushed the French out of their colonies, created a guerrilla network across the region, established communist governments in Laos and Cambodia, fought off the US and united Vietnam, invaded Cambodia and removed Pol Pot from power, held off an invasion by the Chinese. Those people are not to be messed with.

Despite my Grandfather fighting in this war, I really don't know much of anything about it.
I know it's a bit of a meme to bash on the USA for losing to a bunch of rice farmers, but is that actually just what happened? I find it crazy that they bombed them like hell yet still got destroyed.
Relatively speaking, yeah both sides did a damn good job of beating the shit out of each other. The VC actually mostly avoided fighting the American forces and tried to hit the SV forces since they were much weaker and losing the war before the intervention.
Taken side by side, the US did alot of damage to the VC that the Americans didn't really recieve back. But numbers don't tell the whole story when it comes to Vietnam. The US forces were being used politically, so they were never going to be able to do their job.
Then there's the draft issue too. Most US forces were pressed into serving, while the VC were entirely motivated by seeing another foreign aggressor in their land. Massacres were actually relatively rare in this war but when they did occur it was highlighted.
TL;DR This war shows how you cannot win a war simply by fighting better.
After the collapse of French Indochina and Japanese occupation in WWII, Vietnam is divided into two halves. North is Communist, South is "Western-liberal". US props up South Vietnam economically and politically to prevent Communism spreading (see Domino Theory) . The US used a false pretext to intervene militarily (see Gulf of Tonkin) in ~'65. JFK sends limited number of troops over, gets assassinated. LBJ begins to escalate war, implements the draft. Vietnam War drags on. Tet Offensive turns US public opinion heavily against Vietnam War. LBJ resigns after 1st term. Nixon gets elected under pretext of ending the war. He secretly escalates and also sends the military into Cambodia while simultaneously deciding to withdraw US military under "Vietnamization" by handing security to South Vietnamese. When the US leaves, the South Vietnamese army collapses for a number of reasons.
Decades later Robert McNamara realizes that the Vietnamese weren't fighting for Communism, but independence (see The Fog of War). Numerous atrocities occurred leaving millions of Vietnamese dead. US becomes gun-shy until The Gulf War in '91. Vietnam ends up being friendly to the US anyways.

Read robin old's book. It just makes you wanna punch whoever was in charge in the teeth. But it doesn't really matter, the south had so many problems it was inevitable
there's also the fact that the US military was grossly inadequate in eliminating the Viet Cong. the main go-to way of killing the Viet Cong was to send out patrols and use soldiers like bait in order to lure in enemy soldiers. after finding the enemy, often times on the wrong end of an ambush and after usually taking heavy casualties, US soldiers would call bombers into the area which usually took maybe 10 minutes, just enough time for the Viet Cong to escape into the jungle or into the infamous Cu Chi tunnels. and even though the Viet Cong still suffered a huge death toll it was still relatively effective considering superior US weapons and resources. the general population of Vietnam too was pretty much anti-US all around due to a number of reasons.

It would reflect the war better if you add battle icons (like in the tet-offensive), showing combat in as many areas as it is possible to trace. Many fights ended in stalemates and territorial occupations used to be too short to be properly displayed.
