I love these cars, really they are quite reliable and cheap, problem is US people let themselves be scammed by mechanics both VW official and not VW official. Like some just refuse to "work on a foreign car", seriously a mechanic that tells you that should NOT even be getting close to ANY car. Friend of mine was told that when he had to replace an air filter and oil filter. Another one tried to charge him 300 bucks for parts (without labor)! He almost paid it too!
Spark plugs, oil filter, interior filter, air filter and oil should not cost you more than 120 bucks, and the biggest part of that is the oil. Most of it you can do yourself, but any garage can do these things for like 150 bucks or less as it's a simple thing, that a skilled mechanic can do in under an hour. But nope.. now VW has a reputation to be unreliable and it is partly VW's own fault! (Only selling the larger engines in the USA (when the smaller ones are more reliable) and allowing their official dealers and mechanics to overcharge their customers! :( ).
If you own a VW and read this, always check the part prices online or on European sites to see what they are actually worth, don't let yourself be scammed. Seriously.. like changing an oil filter on a FORD is that Different than on A VW "refuse to work on foreign cars!".... - grumbles- .

It sounds like you have a different problem, resetting the service interval, has nothing to do with the car not turning on ? May be check the battery first. In any case you might need a fault code reader.

I think you need vcds to change the language. Depends on the model.
