this guy was my idol when I was in college choir. I remember the day I showed up, going through vocal warmups to test my range.. never thought people were supposed to applaud when I finally bottomed out. *shrugs* Needless to say, I was a freshman coming in to an established choir and ended being their deepest bass
their blend has not sounded the same since elliot and barry left...gosh they sounded SOOO good. i love elliot's voice. you can really hear it in this. and barry's voice is one of my favorite sounds.
He can actually hit a low Bb. He is my idol. :-) Basses rule! I wish I could have seen him in concert with them, but he left just before they came to Iowa.
He goes pretty low. In fact I heard that he first got into Tennessee Ernie Ford (the original singer of 16 tons) because Ford was one of the few singers with a voice low enough for him to sing along with comfortably.
He just hit C# above middle C in the end of this song. I think his vocal range is the typical low bass. (basso profondo) But the color of his voice, well that's just monstrous! Makes his voice sound even lower. Very cool. I would like to know some low basses. That kind of sound is so exhilirating. I would immediately set up an acappella group.
I was watching this and my mom walked into the room and like what she heard so she came over to watch it with me and she said, "Boy, that big guy with the low voice makes those others look like little boys!" I could only reply, "Barry Carl, mom, and yes he does."
Brilliant, amusing version! Sung by us kids on the bush mine where I grew up in Tanzania. Our "theme", the words true in Geita. Some Muzungu men gave half their pay-packets to the club barman, the other half to the Indian shopkeeper, saying "tell me when it's finished." Real meaning to the words "I owe, I owe, it's off to work I go!" My book's about that place, those crazy years. I'm going back first time in 44 years. I'll sing 16 Tons again, at the overgrown mineshaft mouth. And remember...
You should check out "Elvira" by the Oak Ridge Boys. Their bass hits B2; a whole step lower than Barry Karl's last low note in this song. It's crazy! =P
God, I miss Barry Carl being in Rockapella. It's a shame he had to go, but I'm certain he had his reasons. At least he's not letting his talent go to waste; he teaches and things now, so more are learning to do what he does.
Barry is my hero....i'm a baritone myself but i can hit pretty low as well.....i want to hit that last note but i know id never be able to hit it like Barry. i also want to know what Barry's bottom note is even when he fries.
@markquimby82 Seen it; thing is, I think the last note here is more impressive. They have better quality, better backing and a lot of things, but they didn't have a lower bass.
Wow what an amazingly cool and unique voice Barry was giving by our Dear Lord. I don't know were to begin to complement Mr. Carl here, such a fantastic version to begin with. But of course the other guys complemented him so well, you can't forget them ether. But who in the world is the curly red haired dude on the far left, I don't remember him being on Carmon Sandiego?
That's Jeff Thatcher, a vocal percussionist (similar to beaboxing). According to wiki he joined the group in 1993 (during their tenure on Carmen) but only appeared on the show with them during the last season. Actually he does a pretty amazing demonstration of it when the group sang the theme song during this performance.
C# ain't it? :) Wish I had a way to record this myself...I am more of a Barry type bass than a George type bass. Always gotten a kick out of Barry...he's the man! Anyone need a bass? I'm offering. Can sing down to G/G# below this C. (C#???)
Barry is also more of a 'power' kind of bass, whereas George is more on the 'smooth' side of things. Both are terrific though and contribute in their own ways.
I thought I was a decent bass, but this cat is the illest I've heard since Paul Robeson. "To the companyyyy STOOOOOOOORE!!!" Sick!!
such a voice ! it's amazing !

I just now discovered them right here with this video.
He is now the voice of Tony the Tiger! Good for you!!!
their blend has not sounded the same since elliot and barry left...gosh they sounded SOOO good. i love elliot's voice. you can really hear it in this. and barry's voice is one of my favorite sounds.
I just absolutely love that last note!!
Back to back. Yes, my friends.
I love this song! Great job on bass!
Barry Carl has a such a great voice for a bass. its great to hear
Thurl Ravenscroft, if anyone was wondering. Also the voice of Tony The Tiger.
Barry Carl is amazing.
Search "Acapella Roll Jordan" and you'll see the deep voice from Garry Evans.
Good basses this guys.
The vocal percussion can sing too, love it
His voice is cool best part is it is natural too That DEEP voice is something great for movies or musicals
YOW! That's some wonderful vocals. Deep and soulful.
His voice is chewy...absolutely love it!
He can actually hit a low Bb. He is my idol. :-) Basses rule! I wish I could have seen him in concert with them, but he left just before they came to Iowa.
Same! I got to see them at Hancher in IA City soon after George Baldi took over as bass. Wasn't the same.
very goooooooooooood
I love a cappella, WOW, his throat is powerfull, Great singers.
SO AWESOME!
Astounding performance!!!!!
gotta love barry carl! come back to rockapella!
What a great Bass...Low, yet resonant and very attentive to pitch sensitivity....Surely one of the best.
LOVE THIS GUYS ABILITY TO HIT THAT LOW NOTE AT THE END! :)
He goes pretty low. In fact I heard that he first got into Tennessee Ernie Ford (the original singer of 16 tons) because Ford was one of the few singers with a voice low enough for him to sing along with comfortably.
:)
Seriously. That last note. Rocks the hell outta any bass I've ever heard.
oh yeah. sooooo good.
this is Geoff Castelluccis idol
POV: you’re watching this the day after he posts his sixteen tons cover
Possibly the greatest Bass I've ever heard.
I love him! I'm so sad he left the group :(
He just hit C# above middle C in the end of this song. I think his vocal range is the typical low bass. (basso profondo) But the color of his voice, well that's just monstrous! Has to be the greatest Bass voice I've ever heard.
Yeah, I can't decide. That's the timbre that makes him sound so rich and deep, but it also causes him to become nigh incomprehensible.
- Pilum Viris
Crazy good.
Pretty darn good low range rendition of 16 Tons!
hardtackjack man I consider myself a base but damn he’s way lower then I can go
the bass already goes lower when he is talking than i can when i'm singing
I had such a crush on him in Carmen San Diego. I was 13. Weird?
+rubypearl75 No, normal. It would be weird if you had not.
I was watching this and my mom walked into the room and like what she heard so she came over to watch it with me and she said, "Boy, that big guy with the low voice makes those others look like little boys!" I could only reply, "Barry Carl, mom, and yes he does."
Whoa.
Whoa!!!!!!
Barry Carl is possibly my favourite bass ever.
I have to agree with the previous post. I love Barry, though.
nice pipes
Barry Carl = Awesome
Well that is indeed impressive!

@55Duran yes he does his daughter goes to clarkstown north with me

@TJgrebdnul True, he basically made the song. But no one does a lower bass on this one, for as far as I know.
He decided it was time to do his own thing. From what I have heard he is loving retirement. He has some solo albums out.
I don't even think someone who isn't a bass can even say Barry Carl :) Crazy talented!
pure basss
Big voice. Big biceps.
Barry sounds a lot like Thurl Ravenscroft here.
I'd love to hear him do Grim Grinning Ghosts!
Interesting way to do it! I do it a bit differently. Cool rendition!
Damn.
I can't understand a single word he says...but I don't care he's freakin' amazing
Barry is my hero....i'm a baritone myself but i can hit pretty low as well.....i want to hit that last note but i know id never be able to hit it like Barry.
i also want to know what Barry's bottom note is even when he fries.
Barry Carl is a GOD.
I like Barry better than the bass that they currently have. Barry had a lot more vocal presence.
I love the syncopation part.
@Kiyoshi617 16 tons of coolness!
@markquimby82 Seen it; thing is, I think the last note here is more impressive. They have better quality, better backing and a lot of things, but they didn't have a lower bass.
Barry Carl is my hero
BAMF bass! holy crapolla. Love barry. 8~).
that's neat, i didn't know Jeff sang too.
Barry Carl's voice, melt every time. Can you imagine him and Ray walker singing together?
I do agree with you, Barry is amazing, but keep in mind that fame is not a measurement of skill.
Do you mean an Ab(1)? Cause if so, that's pretty impressive. How is your upper range coming along?
u gotta love that insane voic off his
confirmed.
LOL!! Hail the Voice of God!
This man was elephant balls!!!!!!!!!!!
IMHO they're on par, where Carl beats out Jones is that he's a singer, and Jones is just an actor.
Yeah, when I saw them perform back in 2k4, they did "Change in my life" without Microphones and all five sang, no percussion.
Hella jealous. I wish I could get my voice half as deep.
Wow what an amazingly cool and unique voice Barry was giving by our Dear Lord. I don't know were to begin to complement Mr. Carl here, such a fantastic version to begin with. The guy on the far left is Kevin Wright. He replaced Sean Altman in '97 when Sean parted from the group.
That's my friends father
He's so handsome, and 2 years older than I am. Mmm!
While I am not doubting it about Barry, I don't know if I wanna hear what his High F sounds like.
@koolfingaz How so? Point out why and where?
i use to be able to hit that last noet =P
i know, i was saying i was a baritone. really want to be a low bass but i cant hit low enough. :/
i like this one better then the original.. :D:D:D its freakin awesome
reminds me of hellboy :)
C# ain't it? :) Wish I had a way to record this myself...I am more of a Barry type bass than a George type bass. Always gotten a kick out of Barry...he's the man! Anyone need a bass? I'm offering. Can sing down to G/G# below this C. (C#???)
"It was more of a drizzle."
can this replace all of mtv please...
I love Barry's bass, and miss it. But I have to say I would have preferred a more traditional arrangement of this song.
Barry is also more of a 'power' kind of bass, whereas George is more on the 'smooth' side of things. Both are terrific though and contribute in their own ways.
I've seen these guys twice and met them. Barry is the best, dont get me wrong i like george baldi but barry is way better and he is fricken huge!!!!!
his adam's apple is dancing on his throat
barry's got an amazing 5 and a half octave range.
@moondogz10 My Real Brother Barry Carl Will Never Ever Come Back To RockApella To Sing Bass Again.
just because i like being like everyone else
you're kidding right?
Barry looks like the Grinch in some of those close-ups.
Is this voice for real?! :D
what is barry saying at the beginning of the song after he says "i was born in a drivin rain"
I love his bass - absolutely fantastic! but I gotta admit I think Tennessee Ernie Ford does a better job on this song, but still love his voice!
I wonder if Barry can hit middle C o.o; It seems he talks that low too... If he can hit Mid C, he already has 2 and a half octaves lol
