  • The Green Man and his origins may be mysterious, but this is how we explain him and his overwhelming reach throughout the world. MOST of the myths spoken about herein are as our clan records and understands them, not the popular or wildly understood versions.
What gods or myths should I talk about next?
I Upload videos 2 to 3 times weekly on lore, myth, history, and the specific mythology, traditions, and lore of my Clan and modern interpretations of ancient gods, legends, myths, heroes, and traditions from Ireland, Norway, and all of Scandinavia and Europe. Ranging from the Vikings to the Celtic, Gaelic, and Manx people, all the ancient tribes and clans of these people and cultures. As well as mythologies from all over the world

I think the character of Tom Bombadil in LOTR could be a depiction of the Green Man.
For me, whenever I enter an ancient woodland, there's a spirit, a presence that is impossible to define. The whisper in the trees.
The Green Man is as old as the wind.

You’re missing the obvious correlation to the Ents in LOTR. Tom is more like the embodiment of good/merriment, the equal but opposite to the evil in the world. The “good things in the world worth fighting for” from Sam the Brave’s speech.

The Green Man comes from a time when Europe and the British Isles were covered by a thick forest. When men were moving from a hunter-gatherer to an agricultural way of life, our ancestors had to clear the land, fell tree's and grow crops. They used their knowledge of the seasons to grow crops which makes the green man and the regrowth that he represents, a source of good. However, I believe that the slightly eerie aspect of the Green Man comes from the fact that nature is relentless and can't be controlled. Nature reoccupies whatever structure, farm, town or city that mankind has failed to maintain and eventually destroys them which makes the Green Man a watcher who regenerates and waits and who eventually takes back what once was his.

They're not really the same thing, though; the Green Man represents the masculine aspect of the spirit of the Wildwood itself, and the human connection with it, while Cernunnos is the Lord of the Forest, representing the animal spirit, and our connection with animals.

I saw the Green Man in a tree, in a Tesco's car park! I went over to visit a person in the UK and also went to see The Who and this happened when I was sitting in the car, waiting for my friend to get back from picking up a few things. From what I have read and learned from many stories, I have always thought of him as the Spirit of the Primeval Forest which probably covered most of Europe from Stone Age times. I think that imprinted on the earliest inhabitants, just as Joseph Campbell spoke of so many later mythologies coming from these ancient roots. I agree with you that Cernunnos had to be related, and the comment below mentions, the source of Tom Bombadil and perhaps the Pukel men from Tolkien's LOTR. I love that you are telling the ancient stories and keeping them alive. As an American with Scottish and Irish roots, I've loved learning the lore of our ancestors -- I think many of us whose ancestors have been here in the States for generations, feel that we are cut off from our past in Europe. It's good to have people like you who can help us learn what we've lost! Thank you for being our bard!

very nice story :) in finland we have a figure, Tapio, for the woods, but no green man. Though there is Sampsa Pellervoinen, who seeded the first plants and was waken up every spring with rituals/festivals to seed plants again. we're lucky to know these names but i've seen no drawings :)
these green man figures seem to be all over europe, in churches and such too. could be from the times when christianity existed along with old culture

    • @BlackDragonTavern
      @BlackDragonTavern  2 года назад

It certainly seems to be the case that, because he was a less polarizing figure than some old gods, that early European Christians adopted his figure into these depictions as a way of using a trusted figure to combine the traditions of old heathens and pagans with their own.
In the stories we keep Metsähine is the equivalent of the Green Man and Tapio would be closer to Cernunnos and the horned god. Though I do know that they are usually conflated or seen as the same, our traditions have them as separate beings, like how we see Cernunnos and the Green Man.

I saw the green man twice as a kid, playing a bit in front of my house door on the ground. It didn't see me and looked supposed to see me as it came off from the bushes ( hedge) I decided not to react and probably for for a few seconds and carried on playing and it walked a few steps ahead by a tree and I didn't see it. The next I saw it again sneaking like camouflaging by the bushes and I did t want to look in fear and I looked away. Its face was very close to your thumbnail of the green man, it's body was green and it had leaves growing from it, but it had vines like on its body but also similar to a tree that have many groves. The closest thing to it was the TV show swamp thing but not the new one but the dolls 1990sor easily 2000 one. But the face- that had the leaves that looks like a sun shape 🌞 but the eyes, that's was like human eyeballs but green skin and and dark black/brown eyes. His feet were wide, and big and the body was wet like it was from a swamp.
Where we lives back then there were a few houses and some field. I'm sure where was some swamp or lake cos it's wants far from the beach. This was in Srilanka though

When I was a small boy, I had 2 experiences with what I believe was the green man. At 35, I still believe very strongly that these are true. The first, was one day, I looked out the window, and a small, dwarven character appeared and waved at me, as a postman would wave at you. My 2 sisters both claimed they saw him too. None of us thought it was unusual or "off". He seemed very happy and cheerful, like a grandfather you never knew you had. It was like he was checking on us or something. Anyways, the second time I met him, I was a little bit older, (maybe 6-8). He came again, but he was like a young teenager in appearance, and he was in our home. He was very playful and energetic. He was playing silly tricks on us and such. Then he was like an older brother. It was only later, we mentioned we had all seen the green man to our parents, and were told that was just our imagination. Well, our imagination must be super good, and I guess we are telepathic too.... Anyways, my belief is if the green man appears to you as a youth, you will have a strong connection to the natural world for your life. All of us grew up loving insects, mushrooms, birds, animals of all kinds, and plants.

It is fun to think about this kind of stuff. I can see how it might all look interconnected. I worry about over generalizing a pattern though. People notice seasons changing and make up a story about it I think. I don't know if this is an archetype or just general observations people keep in story form because it makes knowledge fun to pass on. Humans are good at play.
Love the presentation and the background music. I used to think all were one...I don't now. Keep it alive though, there is something there.

I have once read that the Green Man is the basis of the Robin hood mythology and all other stories and myths about outlaws that living in the forests of Great Britain. But on the other hand, this Green Man is a very speculative creature and pan-European ornament motif in architecture, and no other connection has been found between it and Robin Hood than the woods, mustache and the Green color. Likewise, it is also believable that the various accounts of some outlaws that living in the British forests are somewhat believable and not just pure fiction, albeit they can be very exaggerated and colored with additional spices.

Are you willing to consider that the Green Man is an archetype in all of us? And why we see him is because we seek greater harmony in ourselves.
That spring is not 'Spring as a Season', rather the budding and freshness that occurs when we allow our old ways of being, beliefs, thoughts, words, projections, perceptions, fears, labels, and anything that limits or labels us or another, so that we burst forth more in our authenticity with greater vitality. "Dying' to the old, leaving the 'comfort' of winter (comfort zones) of winter. All of this death can only occur when the 'divine' masculine goes inward, deep in the forest of our inner selves, under the blanket of snow/frigidity/barrenness, coming out, taking responsibility, moving (springing) towards a solution and taking the action to change his/her old ways of being.

    • @TheGreenArte
      @TheGreenArte Год назад

The old gods aren't archetypes. Paganism is fundamentally and unapologetically animistic... the gods, like all spirits and beings, are sovereign persons; they exist. Archetypes are more likely to follow the presence of a deity rather than be identified with it. In other words, a repeating archetypal pattern in human people exposes the existence of a deity who protects that thread of the cosmic tapestry.

    'Green man'
Spring won't come, a need for strife
To struggle, to be freed from hard ground
The evening mists that creep and crawl
Shall drench me in dew and so I drown.
    I'm the green man
    Sol in prime, sweet summertime
Cast shadows of doubt on my face
A mid day sun, it's caustic hues
    Refracting within the still lake
    I'm the green man
    Autumn in her flaming dress
Of of orange, brown, gold fallen leaves
My mistress of the frigid night
I worship, pray to on my knees
    I'm the green man
    Winter's breath of filthy snow
    Befrosted paths to the unknown
Have my lips become true purple?
Life is coming to an end
So says me me Wiccan friend
    Nature coming full circle

When i was a kid i never questioned or looked into “the green man” because i thought it was just a nightmare from sleep paralysis. I saw a glowing green square bushlike entity with a a mouth that looked like homer simpsons’. The room was dark, and it was just swinging from the window and talking in some giberisch that sounded like lots of people talking at once. Of course i got scared and pulled the blankets over me. Soon it disappeared and havent seen it ever since. It really shocked me that once my curiosity awoke on what entity i saw. I searched google for green entity swinging from the window, and thats how i found out that what i saw was real.. Crazy

I looove these stories I am learning. I'm more or less a Jungian, and I believe our common myths come from the common central nervous system of man. Long ago, our brains were different, and many more people heard "the gods" (bicameral mind) which were not outside of themselves, but a part of what is now unconscious (for most of us). The great journey in life is to be who you really are and know your place in oneness with all...the aware integration of the conscious, unconscious, and collective unconscious. But that's just me. 🕉

The Old Gods are not archetypes. Paganism is, and always has been, emphatically animistic. The gods, as with all spirits and beings, are fully sovereign *persons* who exist in their own right. When we see the old gods reduced to archetypes it's a good sign that human exceptionalism is at play and that the human person is being held as somehow 'more than' the other non-human persons who inhabit and indwell the world.

It's likely The Green Man is pre-IE rather than Proto-IE, if of antiquity (which I absolutely believe he is). 'Wildness' and the deep forest aren't things cherished by the PIE peoples; but his personality definitely fits in with the deities that remained after PIE presence but don't fit with their cosmology. I have always felt that he is truly one of the Old Gods; present throughout Europe and many other parts of the world before the more orderly and cosmos-focused PIE folk arrived.

There as plain as the nose on my face was a man surrounded by leaves staring straight at me. I couldne believe what i was seeing. I even rubbed m eyes and kept lookining and refocusing at this face. he was alive and just looking down at me. i told m husband and best friend about what i had seen. I had no idea what t was and where it came from? Because there are two versions of the Green Man.
The 'leaf-mask' version where facial features actually grow into leaves and the 'disgorging heads' where branches and greenery sprout from the mouth. The first can be traced back to 2nd and 3rd century Rome. The origins of the disgorging head motif can be found in the Hindu legends of the lion headed demon - the kirttimukha. In the 4th - 6th centuries AD its image was combined with another mythical creature - the makara which was believed to disgorge wonderful things such as the 'Cosmic Tree'. The kirttimukha-makara motifs can be found in 12th century churches and probably arrived in the west via the Viking trading routes.
They quickly fell out of favour as the 'Green Man' motif was developed.
