    This video made my choice. I still will be using it with iPhone as external mic but like the option to record hi quality sound separately and put it to the video afterwards in post. Thank you for such a perfect product review. It hard in these days to bump into a video with no bullshit around when the vloger needs to push his ego first before reviewing. Once again, thanks!

    Wow, what a difference. I just used my H5 for the first time tonight to record a practice for a blues band I'm in. However, I did get it primarily for outdoor use with my A6300 when recording vidoe. I have a Rodes hot shoe mounted mic but it isn't good enough. The birdsong is amazing on the H5. What capsule were you using?

    Hi Todd, I just saw your video and it was great. I just bought a Zoom H5 and I haven't recorded yet with my cooking videos. I have to learn how to get the editing screen. I know how to edit with my MacBook Pro but this screen is so different.thank you for sharing your knowledge, God Bless You.

      Good luck and thanks for watching! You can probably still use your current software. If you have to mix the H5 audio into the video you can clap at the very beginning of your video, then line the clap audio and video up in your editing software to get everything in sync, then edit out the clap on your final video.

I've been making cooking videos in RUclips for almost a year now and its time I make them better. I started w my iPhone, then I bought the MacBook Pro and now I'll be buying a camera and lighting to use w my Zoom H5. I signed up for Epidemic sound for the music and I love it. very excited to put it all together.

    Hello Todd, great video, you are a professional in your field, could you tell us, we have a zoom H8, and we want to record the sounds of crunching, rustling for asmr, for example, watermelon crunching or seeds falling on the table, how would you recommend setting up our recorder with standard microphone XY, thank you

    • @ToddAudio
      @ToddAudio  2 года назад +3

      Glad you found the video helpful! Record indoors and get the room as quiet as possible. Listen for any noises you can turn off, such as computers or ac system. Use something such as acoustic absorbent panels, or alternatively really thick blankets to hang around the zoom and source of your sound to make a makeshift enclosure. This will help block out unwanted reverberations and room noise, since the mic is designed to pick up everything in the room. (You can try it with and without this and choose your preference, but if you prefer the room noise/reverberations I would still recommend recording without and adding them manually with a subtle reverb effect when editing for more control. I think the Zoom probably has a reverb effect if you don't have something else for it.) It probably will have more of an asmr sound without reverb in order to give the effect of being really close. Use the mic in the x configuration pointing at the sound source a foot or two away from it. Adjust the volume so the input meter is high but not clipping. If you are recording a watermelon or something that might splash and damage the Zoom, be careful. Probably try hanging a sheet or thin blanket that allows air to easily pass through infront of the Zoom to block it. (If you can avoid having to do this you will probably get slightly better results, but I wouldn't risk it if there is a chance something might splash into the mic.) It probably came with a windscreen, and if so that might work too if you also cover the body of the zoom with a plastic bag or something to keep it from getting wet. If the windscreen gets splashed, pull it off immediately. You will have to use your own judgement about how much risk or how wet it could get and what an appropriate solution would be.

    Hello,Tod,I am a guitarist andhave been playing for 36 years...But i also use Logic and create experimental music....I need a pretty good outside recorder to record samples to then cut and edit in my music software "Logic"...I listened to and watched a video of the top ten recorders which utilised the inbuilt microphones but to be honest was not really impressed with the inbuilt microphones except the roland r-26.....which seemd clearer than the H-5 and H-6...I think to be honest an out board Boom shot gun microphone plugged into the recorders would be better with a wind screen over the microphone....What do you think?....I am considering buying a Recorder...I need a pretty good recorder to record the samples i will be using for my experimental music...Battery is a drum sampler which has cells...I can then create surreal experimental drum kits using the samples...I know nothing about The zoom,tascam,Roland recorders...But I do have a small 4tr digital tascam which has miccrophones built in they are good but to me they sound a bit too tinny which is the problem with some digital recorders compared to analog...Analog is much warmer sound...So i wanted to ask some people with much mor experience with location/outside recording which would be the best one to record a bus engine or large objects made of metal etc?.....Thank you very much...peace....Regards

    • @ToddAudio
      @ToddAudio  7 лет назад +1

      Hi. It really comes down to your preference. I would go for something where you have the option to connect an external mic, so you have more flexibility. Keep in mind, some of the digital recorders you mentioned might simply produce the tinny sound you describe if it is inside in a room where reverberations are getting back into the mic. This can happen more easily with a stereo mic made for range, as with most handheld recorders. However, you might have a different result outdoors. From my experience with the H5 outdoors, if there is any wind at all, you will need a wind screen. You might consider finding a local shop that allows rentals and see if they have any you can try out for comparison before buying. Hope this helps!

      Hi Todd,Thank you...I did a 1st level in sound engineering,a we covered various professional microphones but not sampling outside,Maybe that was the next level.I am mainly a musician and know quite a bit about acoustics...With boom mice you can directly record the sound in front of you from the source as it cuts out most of the frequencies from the sides...Wind screens are good for the wind....Thanks Todd i will look more into this...

    did you have a furry wind screen on the zoom h5 ?

  • @richardwalker5716
    @richardwalker5716 3 года назад +2

    Hello I’ve just bought one, did you connect a mic to the zoom H5 or is this with just the zoom H5 ? Which settings on the mic dial did use I went out today and used mine but the sound didn’t seem as bright and clear as your recording.
    Any advice would be great

    • @ToddAudio
      @ToddAudio  3 года назад +2

      This is just the zoom. Put headphones on so you can hear it while recording, start with volume all the way down and then slowly turn it up until it is barely starting to clip with the red light blinking. Then turn it slightly down until it is almost as loud as it will go without clipping and the red light blinking. If it is windy the wind will blow into the mic and cause distortion so you will need a "dead cat" which is a cover that goes over the mic part to filter wind and looks sort of like cat fur. In this video I had to use a shirt instead but it was not ideal and I still had some wind distortion that I clipped out for the video.

      Hi, I also bought the h5 recently and I'm having trouble getting a clean sound like the video. I bought it with the aim of improving the sound of my hiking videos, but it seems to me that despite having a fuller sound, the sound that I get directly from gopro 9 is cleaner.
      (Maybe i'll do a video comparing the raw sound of the h5 to the raw sound of the gopro.)
      In the tests I set the gain to 6/7, but I have quite a hissing sound and the levels are still quite low.
      What kind of post production was applied to this video, in order to remove de base hissing sound?

    • @ToddAudio
      @ToddAudio  3 года назад

      There was no post production other than level adjustments. Are you sure it is not the wind? Have you tested it inside?

    • @virtualtrails1617
      @virtualtrails1617 3 года назад

      @@ToddAudio I've uploaded two examples comparing the two.
      ruclips.net/video/K_rmkYZ_UyM/видео.html
      ruclips.net/video/XnY3tQS1Tyw/видео.html
      On both cases the H5 was on level 6 or 7, and I just bumped the gain in post to make de hiss more noticeable.
      After listening to this multiple times I think that the fact that the gopro captures more sounds, especially those on my back, transmits the sensation of a fuller sound, while the zoom, being directed forward, captures less sounds.

    • @ToddAudio
      @ToddAudio  3 года назад +1

      @@virtualtrails1617 both sound pretty good to me other than the minor background hiss you mentioned. Does gopro record sound in stereo or mono? If mono, then the fact the zoom is stereo is one consideration. With the zoom, try to record at a high volume so you don't have to bump the gain in post as much but not so high it clips. It will take some trial experimenting to find that sweet spot for each new environment. There is a setting that records a backup track in a lower volume for this very reason, in case you peak in volume and need to overlay a backup track (this would require some audio editing to dub it in). The gopro autocalibrates the input gain for you whereas the zoom is more manual. You are correct that you should face it the direction of the audio but it still should get a full stereo sound on a broad range of anything infront of it.

    im confuse on choosing zoom h4n pro or h5 for my asmr video i'll put the device like 30-35cm from me,which one will make my audio crisp and sensitivee?

    • @ToddAudio
      @ToddAudio  3 года назад

      I think the sound quality would be comparable but the h5 will be a little easier to adjust volume input levels and operate. If you mean 30-35cm from your mouth, I would also recommend seeing if you can rent a dynamic vocal mic like an sm58 at some point to hook up to the zoom and see if you like the quality any better for your application. If you are processing with effects afterwards it might be better but if not you might like the sound of the built in mic better.

    Does anyone know how to fix this: so
    Basically I have an
    Olympus WS- 853 digital voice recorder, which I use for meetings and regular stuff, (although it's not as good as I thought it was despite being £85), I once recorded rain sound with it while outside just by using the handheld recorder alone but the noise capture was not the best of quality and the wind seemed to really mess up with the sound too.
    Does anyone have any suggestions for external microphones or other cheap but really good bits of equipment I could buy to fix the wind and quality problem especially when recording outside noise. If so I would really appreciate it 💛 if you could give full names of recommended products or equipment, or full details in advice. Thank you!

      Just the stereo mic. The level depends on how load your environment is. Start with the knob turned low and gradually turn up until it is loud but not clipping/peaking

    Hey what do you do to edit your audio in post? I just got a mic to record in the field, but what's the usual post editing process to maximize the audio's potential?

    • @ToddAudio
      @ToddAudio  7 лет назад +1

      I normally add any audio tracks I am using for a particular section of the video to the timeline in my video editor and then align them where I want as far as the timing. If you use any version of Premiere, you can press ALT+(arrow key) to nudge a selected audio clip over 1 video frame at a time for precise edits (such as dialogue recorded on an external mic). Then, you basically just listen and adjust the volume levels of each track so that everything sounds natural, and anything important is easily audible. Also make sure the overall volume is consistent from beginning to end and there are no parts of the video surprisingly louder or quieter. It helps to use both speakers and headphones for this. You pretty much just use your judgement and you get a better feel for it the more you do it.

    is there any difference in h2n and h5 microphone sensitivity?

    • @ToddAudio
      @ToddAudio  2 года назад

      I don't know for sure, but it looks like the biggest difference is the polar pattern. The H5 is a directional stereo mic setup so it will pick up more of what is in front of it. The H2N has 5 total internal mics instead of 2 and capable of recording on 360 degree surround sound. As far as how sensitive they are picking up nearby sounds, I would guess they are similar but not 100% sure.
