I appreciate you listening to entire ost’s and not just the good songs. It helps you pick up on themes and, in some cases, almost pick up on the story without actually playing the game. It’s something I can’t do, but it’s fascinating seeing you do it!
Shadowlord's castle is a favourite for mine but the way it happens in the game is nothing short of it being a FULL experience. The events that lead up to it, the voice acting, the transitioning of the music, the mixing, the characters, to just as it moves into the gameplay after the cutscene; was one of the most memorable moments in the entire game.
I can't believe the songs from the DLC arenas weren't included in this album, they're such absolute bangers that it's unreal. Five of Nier's most iconic songs that were remixed into Devil May Cry-style fast paced techno themes.
@@samuelrodriguez5282 The original version of Replicant/Gestalt had a DLC dream section where you played as the opposite version's MC and did some small challenges to unlock costumes for the MC, Kaine, and Emil. It's also included in the remaster and you get to play as Gestalt's version of the MC with the new graphics.
I'm a little sad we didn't get to hear Shadow Lord Music box but there's only so many bonus tracks we can listen to. It's one of my favourite final boss fights especially with how the music shifts from somber to fight and then goes into music box in the last phase. It's so good and so emotionally charged
1:04:24 I still just find it extremely cool that they added in "Ashes of Dreams" Into Shadowlord. Really adds so much more weight to the song than it needed.
Fleeting Words ~Outsider~'s choir uses a letimotif borrowed from Final Fantasy XIV (almost surely intentionally, since Keiichi Okabe and Masayoshi Soken (FFXIV's composer) collaborated on a set of Drakengard/Nier themed raids during FFXIV's "Shadowbringers" expansion around the same time the Nier remake was in production). That song is the theme for the city of Ishgard: "Solid". You can hear it in the brass at the beginning. If you want a time commitment, but some real good music, check out FFXIV's soundtracks. There's like a dozen of them but they're all excellent.
the start of grandma reunion made my head explode the first time i heard it LOL to this day it remains one of my favorite songs from the remake it's so powerful
Hollow Dreams. You've heard Devola's version of Song of the Ancients, you heard Popola's, and now you've heard Hollow Dreams sung by both of the twins.
16:29 it's definitely intentional, the entire track is crafted to the tiniest, most insignificant, detail. The character the track is for is extremely conflicted and struggling with her current and past nature, fighting her urges until her wish prevents her from doing it anymore and destroying everything she was fighting for in the first place... not that she could have ever achieved it.
🤔 The Forest song in Nier Automata (the one used near the Castle where the robot baby is, where A2 is seen for the first time) I swear has the exact same percussion/xylophone-ish score as "The Incomplete Stone" from the original Nier. Might be the same recording used for that specific layer too.
It's been like 7 months since this came out, but if you're still checking the comments, there's a video by Jonathan Barouch that goes into why Fleeting Words sounds kinda weird and it's mainly key signature funkiness (blurring F# minor and C# major)! It does have some spoilers for Route B of the game, but it's a great analysis.
Repose is one of my favourite songs in Nier ost. It has some relaxing tone but also feel sorrow for this world. It make you want to cry alone in the rain.
I actually had a patron at my bar who'd get drunk to the point of not being able to stand, and still re-play any melody i put on the speakers on his guitar after hearing it once. Really clean too.
Hello! I'm looking for a term in which was used in a previous video game soundtrack video. The term had to do with the notes moving in a scale, staircase motion, I feel like they were called something like "syncracism" or something like that... I've spent about an hour now trying to go back, but no beans. I thought it was in Minecraft or Terraria Calamity, but I couldn't seem to stick it (Sorry, not a music theory person, just like the videos!)
I think I still prefer the original arrangement of Shadowlord over the remake's version, but that won't stop me from keeping the albums on loop. I just prefer the more in your face drums.
Not a musician by any means but I totally agree on your opinion about the remastered OST, it sounds fuller and just more impactful to me. And I heard the original before playing and I also understand why a fan might not like those changes. This is one of those old good, new better scenarios imho
Nah there’s some changes where it IS a(n) (slight) upgrade over the OG, for example Songs of the Ancients but on other songs like Wretched Automatons the OG is better. In general I think they’re both equal, so neither version is genuinely better or superior than the other, just different versions of the same songs.
@@firstamongsuckers23 I just listened to both versions and I don't know how you can say that lol. The industrial sounding percussion could be louder maybe.
It took a while, especially since this is the first time I've heard Grandma: Reunion, but my GOODNESS. Shadowlord remains among my favourite songs ever for just the deep, vaguely religious sense of loss and tragedy that is carried along by orchestral bombast. I said it in my previous comment about Grandma, but the remastered OST that undercut the simplicity of that song absolutely pushes Shadowlord out of the park. The dense mix that you were talking about, I do tend to hear those kinds of things up in the corners of the space, the little organ flourishes and runs, and where it doubles the melody (Fortissax from Elden Ring, anyone?) But either way, Shadowlord is the theme of the ending of the human race, brought down to a conflict between two brothers who love their sister very, very much and would d *anything* to protect her. Just so happens that you're playing the brother that is arguably ideologically in the wrong, but your mileage may vary on that note, and it fits so completely and utterly. Additionally, not mentioned on the OST but in versions I enjoy that are extended out, the various different arrangements of the central melody that cut out different pieces of the full Shadowlord to give a feeling of reduction and diminishment (emotional, not musical - not necessarily? I forget what diminished chords sound like anyways, LOL) over time. In both the original and the remaster, Shadowlord is also a place where multiple characters sacrifice their lives to the very same music. That the same piece can be both a driving, powerful boss theme, and a quiet organ/choir lament, AND THE HIGHLIGHTING OF BASS VOICES OMG IN THE REMASTER, and then finally wind down and shed layers until only a solitary music box is playing over the last run across the arena to defeat... Well, to defeat your own soul. Damn shame, that.

I really wish there was a reaction tot he english version of Ashes of Dreams. That song, knowing what the lyrics say, what they mean. It hits me hard every time. And much of it is lost not being able to understand, even though the song still hits hard in this version.

It’s a shame, although the real loss was that we didn’t get any of the remixes from the DLC/15 Nightmares album.
I know it's chaos language, but that one line in Shadowlord always sounded like "You are a monster" to me. And it's so fitting.
1:04:24 I still just find it extremely cool that they added in "Ashes of Dreams" Into Shadowlord. Really adds so much more weight to the song than it needed.
i cant really hear it, is it like a background melody?
Emil's Sacrifice is such an integral song it feels, enough to reappear again in the next game.
