This is the best Brahms Op. 111 on RUclips, well deserving of the enthusiastic reception at the end. The Verbier Festival brings together international soloists who combine for all-star performances like this virtuoso performance of Brahms' great quintet. The stereo sound is excellent and so is the camera work which focuses on the most prominent performers in the moment, something surprising rare. Thank you for posting this.

Both Brahms viola quintets (Op. 88 and this one) are among the great masterpieces of the late 19th century -- and very difficult to perform. This one, op. 111, was written as Brahms was planning retirement -- it was going to be his jovial farewell piece. (But then Brahms heard RIchard Muhlfeld play clarinet and came out of retirement to write clarinet music)
The performance is very interesting but ultimately too ragged for me. Bell is a fabulously creative musician and I'm sure it would be so much fun to read this with him, but in this performance his phrasing is so fluid that the group just isn't together sometimes when they need to be. (and it also reflects a lack of rehearsal time).
Some of the most dramatic, forceful moments lose some energy when the attacks aren't together, when you can sense they're just feeling it a little bit differently. It's fine to have distinctive voices in quartets and quintets but there also need to be moments where everything is just tight like a good rock and roll band.
I would love to take Bell out and have Shoji play first and bring in a really strong string quartet 2nd violinist -- the 2nd is actually the glue that ties this piece together. And Shoji's extremely clear sound I think would serve this music better than Bell who over-emotes to the point of muddiness at times. I'm a big Bell fan but this piece doesn't play to his strengths.

Shoji is too modest in chamber willingly playing second. Her brahms concerto is among the most definitive. But this line-up of hard-core soloists like Kim too who happens to be the most experienced chamber musician of this group obviously was not going for the tightest quintet playing. Not a fan of bell but if I close my eyes he sticks pretty well since I did not expect these people to ever play together too.

@@daniel3231995 i don't think i could stand to play in a group with Josh; he would make me seasick. never been a particular fan of his anyway. he seems like a nice guy, but i just can't stand his overbearing, over the top on stage personality. i gravitate more towards players like Shoji or Heifetz who just get on with the job, without all the distracting theatrics.

My favorite piece of music ever, possibly partially because it was the one my dad used to teach me a youngster how to read and follow a score while listening to a recording. This is a nice performance, but for me personally is excessively rushing through the third movement. Of course my take on it is totally different on my Señor Juan Brahms CD, which is on RUclips. Two dozen jazz musicians improvise on the CD of mostly Brahms in South American folkloric rhythms, including all four movements of this piece.

      Fernando Reyes Franzani well said.
The quartet is not an orchestra so the cello is better in the middle.
The camera films so little attractive and too many close up that you see many backs.
And Bell plays great almost falls off his chair.
