What is die clashing?

A die clash occurs when the dies come together with no planchet in between. The dies mark each other, leaving remnants of each other’s design on the opposing die. Coins minted using clashed dies will show portions of the reverse design on the obverse and/or portions of the obverse design on the reverse of the coin.
