  • Red Bull has gone 'backwards', other teams have caught up, but McLaren made the biggest gains- Deploying a ten piece upgrade at Miami that brought Lando his first ever win, his second win this weekend at Zandvoort that destroyed Max, and has been well within a shot of winning several races since, if not for a strategy blunder at Silverstone and Lando being too aggressive at Austria.
But there's no denying that out of all the teams that have improved, McLaren made a massive jump, doing so at that Miami Grand Prix. So where were they before and where are they now? And what the hell did they do to the car?! Let's find out, shall we?

McLarens position is the result of bring brutally honest with themselves a few years back after the end of the 2nd Honda engine supply. Thats when McLaren noticed that things needed fixing. It took time, Seidl came and went, but soon all the pieces of the orchestra fell into place, got in tune and time with each other and this is the result. McLaren seem to have a strategy around their upgrades where they changed not just one part but all the other parts that are affected by that change as well. With the aerodynamics of an f1 car being so dependent on all of the parts of the car working in unison this could be why there updates are so effective in adding performance.

Much as I like the new management in general, they have nothing on Ron Dennis when it comes to making unpopular decisions. E.g. 1997, DC was ordered to let Hakkinen to pass so he could get his first win. The order came via his engineer, but it was a Dennis one. Basically DC was threatened with the sack if he didn't do it. Up till then, only DC had won any races for the team (in their partnership, natch) but Mika was Ron's - literal - blue-eyed boy and everyone knew that once he broke the no-win curse, it would unleash his ability. That happens so often! He went on to win the next two championships.
Was that decision morally correct? Probably not. Was it _practically_ correct? We can't say that Mika _wouldn't_ have won the next two years, but IMHO it would have been highly unlikely, so the answer is yes.
Does Stella have the stones to make that decision mid-race now? I honestly don't know.
(This isn't a Ron fangirl moment, btw. I respect a lot of what he did and how he did it - especially with Max Moseley being a complete bastard - but there was a lot about him that I don't like. I just give credit where it's due and will call out anyone who deserves that. I'm not even sure whether the DC decision ranked as good or bad because it made a champion - probably - but wrecked another career.)

The problem mclaren face is, this is the first time in years and years they've had the fastest car. They havnt been under pressure until now, so have forgot what it's like to be in control of almost all that they can be. Max and red bull have been fighting ferrari and Mercedes for wins since basically he arrived there. So he's learned to maximise what he has. On a given weekend, he's picked up the maximum available. Mclaren and norris haven't consistently done that yet.

Everyone seemed to forget that in the '80s it took from 1983 to the middle of 1985 to get their engine anywhere near reliable or responsive enough to make a decent race engine. through 1986 to 1988 it was the engine to have even though Lotus managed to mess up in spite of having the best engine.
When McLaren grabbed the engine from Williams (who had gone through the tribulations of developing the thing) it was more or les the complete package which is why they were so dominant.

this is an absolutely ridonculus turn of events and even better that theres an aussie involved and its sucked me right back into a sport id almost given the flick. Theyre not getting the drivers championship, Norris could potentially win by 2 as per a higher up comment, piastri hooooooooly moly howd he even get up to 4th? BUT, theyre BOTH doing very similar lap times and easily competing with each other, which means max CONSTRUCTORS points (which RBR is shitting the bed with by leaving Perez in the seat) which means these guys are now probably the only threat to RBR getting both titles.

    • @valerierodger
      @valerierodger 9 дней назад

There were already a few races before then where they could have used Oscar to back up the pack to benefit Lando - but the drivers championship probably still seemed like a pipe dream.
There also may be something in Oscar’s contract stipulating that he is not to be relegated to second driver status, and limiting these situations in which he can be sacrificed for the sake of his teammate.
Even without that, you have to be careful what you do when you have two top drivers in the team and you want to keep both of them. You have to let them race unless it’s obviously not in the best interest of the team, and/or one driver is obviously in a title race and the other driver is not. Even now it’s only a theoretical possibility that Lando could end up overtaking Max by the end of the season, just a few races ago, it would’ve been a laughable suggestion.

Lando & Oscar are underrated they are better this season than most give them credit for. Mclaren has a boss who is a racer at heart and a team that is constantly improving in every area. They pretty much were the 2nd slowest car at the start of the new regs and to now be the fastest car beating the all conquering Verstappen and Newey RB with a budget cap in the timeline they did is incredible. 2009 was impressive but Mclaren had a huge budget now with the cap it forced them to be innovative and make the most of what they have. Being a Mclaren fan since Kimi was there this Mclaren is so much more fun and exciting compared to the old operating theatre perfection during the Ron Dennis 2000s era

Interesting to see how close qualifying was compared to the finishing gaps in the early races. This did not just seem to be how kind/aggressive the cars & drivers were to their tyres, but Red Bull seems to be at its strongest with a heavy fuel load which allowed Verstappen to pass & pull away (& also explains why they did not usually get fastest lap). Later in the race when this advantage was lost, the lead was too great for others to catch & pass.
This helps to explain why Norris pulled away from Verstappen in Miami. Verstappen lost pace quite suddenly after he hit the bollard, scraping the bottom of his car on the kerb in the process. Riding kerbs is not something the 2024 Red Bull does very well compared to some others.
Even if their positions had not been swapped by the later safety car, his lead would have been wiped out.

Final few races 😹 just a mere *nine* to go, practically home stretch.
I think the constructors has snuck up and gone to McLaren already. As Max was busy extending his lead, Perez’s ten race streak of DNF or lower than 6th 🙀while Piastri’s was looking like a future champion, has nobbled Red Bull.
Oddly it’s the WDC that might suddenly be back on after Zandvoort. It’s extreme and most pundits won’t believe it because no-one’s successfully pulled back a lead like Max’s, since James Hunt, when Lauda was in hospital care.
The gap’s still a crazy 7.7 pts per race, but Max can’t shut that out with a string of seconds. 3 useless Sprints and 9 gimmicky Fastest Lap points out there, Lando could still pull back a whopping 75 pts.
    That’s 8.3 pts per weekend.
Suddenly Grumpy Old Max in July wasn’t complaining about nothing, Red Bull really have dropped this. He’s one race short of “beat Oscar Piastri” for the rest of the season to “beat Lando just once more”.
Now it’s F1 2024, this might flip on its head really fast. But simple stats says far from Monza being a RedBull banker race, it’s due to pay out for McLaren again, so who knows 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don't think it's impossible for them to overhaul Red Bull and more importantly, I don't think it is impossible for Lando to overhaul Max. With 9 races left, and only 70 points between them, it only takes one or two bad results or non finishes for Max, and Lando will be right on top of him.
And while I fully agree with the fact that the other teams have caught them up this year, I do think the whole brake ban has to be at least partially responsible, just as the secretive ban on Ferraris trick engine from a few years ago hampered all the Ferrari powered cars.

    • @tylercampbell2362
      @tylercampbell2362 17 дней назад

70 points is nearly double the largest points margin someone has comeback from to win a championship (Verstappen 2022 46 points behind Leclerc) And he started clawing back that margin with 3/4 of the season left over. Converting old points systems Raikkonen has the most impressive comeback being the equivalent of 72 points down at his worst in 2007 but again he started his comeback 1/3 of the way through the season and not only dominated the latter 2/3 compared to his title rivals, but his two main rivals in Hamilton and Alonso were busy taking points off each other and fighting a bitter inter-team rivalry while Massa was Kimi’s rear gunner for the entire second half of the season.
Lando had a bigger points deficit than anyone else has overcome in history, has less time to do it than the biggest upsets in F1 history had, and is in a team without a clear #1, #2 subservient driver dynamic, or at least they seem unwilling or hesitant to do so…. So while It’s not technically impossible for Lando to win, it would take a monumental feat that has literally never been seen before, he would have to win every remaining race and have some luck to boot. On top of all that I just don’t think Lando is that guy right now, though with more displays like yesterday that narrative while definitely change and change quick

Oh and by the way, remember 2012 when:
    - A big move by Hamilton to a new team is announced for a season right before a big regs shakeup

I think McLaren can win the constructors as long as they continue to out score Red Bull. The driver’s title is possible mathematically for Norris if they get 5 1-2 results with help from his teammate. Mercedes could help by taking points of Red Bull. Of curse you will have reliability issues to later in the season, along with penalties for changes. IMO, this is the result of some long-term thinking and just putting their heads down and working on the car and the team, instead of being overly sensitive and reactive, chasing short term gains like certain other teams. Even the one major shift in this current era, Seidl and Key's departure, had them simply build on what they had, bringing Stella and Prodromou up while they waited for Marshall.

But in reality i think it's just their opponents actually doing less than them to catch up. Redbull seems to be heavily compromised by it's power struggle and mess on the top and Ferrari messed up their upgrades. And Mercedes was just so much behind compared, that even tho they improved significantly it's not enough to catch them up quite completely. They seem to be the only team who didn't really have any kinds of problems this season that could interrupt their upgrade plan and that's what might pay off for them

To give Lando the best shot of the drivers title, McLaren need to prioritise him while Piastri needs to start taking points off Verstappen. Lando is starting to show he’s the team’s No 1 driver while Piastri needs to improve because finishing 27 seconds behind your team mate in the best car at the Dutch Grand Prix isn’t good enough. I just hope that McLaren screwing Lando over at the Hungarian Grand Prix in favour of his slower team mate doesn’t decide the title.
As for the constructors title, I think McLaren will win that with ease.

hes not getting the drivers title and mclaren are the second oldest of the teams. the whole 'herp derp driver only' is a millenial thing, the driver fights for the drivers championship, the team fights for the constructors. the team gets paid for their performance in the CONSTRUCTORS, while the DRIVER gets paid for the DRIVERS championship. the way theyre going now, they WILL win the constructors. Which means shitloads more money next year, two hot drivers, one contracted until 2026 while Lando is probably due for a new contract. by *not* prioritising one over the other. Norris has now had 5 years to do what Piastri has done in 1. This is damn good news for everyone.

Aidan, What is your opinion regarding the thinking that Newey, a fan of racing himself and was always at the races, combined with his understanding of the car makes him a near perfect person to translate what drivers say for the race engineers? Could this have been key to redbull nailing the setup and now, with him gone, they are struggling to get the setup right? The coincedence of the drop in performance immediately after he stopped going to races/working for the racing program can't really be chalked up to upgrades that quick but setup problems could take immediate effect.

Max ending up second despite the inferior car, does lead some credence to the statements in the news lately that Red Bull Racing had been slow in improving the car, because Max is such a good driver (and he always complains about something about his car) that RBR didn't realize just how bad things were.

Not sure how relevant this is, but the way it is run now, Red Bull can only bring X amount of upgrades to their car for the season, where as can bring more. Looking at what McLaren have brought, it seems like they are modifying the whole car (I exaggerate but you know what I mean). With that in mind and assuming that the Red Bull is already close (or closer) to it's optimum performance, any upgrades can only bring a limited improvement, where as McLaren had an awful long way to go and it seems like they have finally found the key. Result? Everyone (well some teams) are closer than they have been for a long time making the competition more fierce and intriguing. A shame that new cars and regs are on the way as it usually means one team steals a march on the others who then spend 2 years playing catch up! If it ain't broke..........................?

  • @privateinformation2960

RBRs Chassis might be a problem but if Verstappen and Perez were both finishing close to each other they could at the very least maximise the points for where theyre finishing. RBRs biggest threat to the constructors is Perez. Whats the answer there tho, no point bringing a junior in because theyve gotta learn the car AND do it under race conditions. Test driver knows the car, but doesnt do it under race conditions. So who do we know that already knows the car and is already running under full race conditions?
Swap Ricciardo back in until the end of the year. If he cant get a few points at least, he goes next year, but he isnt completely done, hes still going to at least be a half decent backup driver where Perez at the moment just flat out isnt. Thats not just me fanboying out, it just makes the most sense from a team POV.
Now i can promise you im not fanboying out, because unless RBR do something now, and Ferrari pull out their finger, this is looking very much like its going to be McLarens year, and a good part of that is down to consistency even when they werent fighting for wins. I want to see McLaren get it this year. Either way, i still win with both of those scenarios.

Even if Red Bull gets back to even footing with McLaren or, perhaps, even slightly ahead, I still think McLaren have a very good shot at winning the constructors'. Simply because Perez doesn't inspire me with confidence. Perez does have 2-3 tracks coming up where he's done well in recent years, but I don't think it would be enough. He's too slow compared to Verstappen and, of course, McLaren.
As for the drivers' championship... it's not impossible for Norris to still win it, but it would take a miracle. I don't see it happening. It would require either a pretty much perfect record for Norris which I don't think either he or the team can produce right now, or some serious blunders from Verstappen/Red Bull.
He might've had a better shot at it, but there where plenty of points thrown away. It would be something if he ends up losing it by less than those 7 points. Thinking of the whole Hungarian GP kerfuffle. That would be one for the ages as much as him actually winning it.
