There nothing wrong with shedding a tear when a living being comes to the end of its life. Especially when you know for certain it had a fair well-cared for time in your custody. Wild animals don't get old and retire to Palm Springs. The natural way of the wild is very cruel and always ends ugly. Big Mac had maybe two bad days in his entire life. Nothing much more fair exists for cattle these days.

Houston, I just wanted you to know that me, a grown man that has raised and hunted for a lot of my food, may have got a little wet-eyed myself seeing Big Mac's last ride. It's a good thing to raise your own food, but it's not always easy when you raise certain animals that happen to be good-natured and have a cool personality like Big Mac. But it's great knowing that you raise them with care and that they never went hungry and they had a good life, and you and your dad did that for Big Mac, and in return, your entire family will now have food for another year or so.

The advantage of what he's doing is he knows his animal has not been injected with hormones or antibiotics or any other garbage did they put in the store bought meat to fat and them up. It's done naturally with good food And kindness.God put these animals on earth for a reason Either for a beast of burden or for food.If you don't like me that's fine But if you like me why not have healthy meat on your family table. My family let me raise our spring calf every year, then in the fall, they would load it up to "live with the other cows." It took a while to figure out what was going on, I woke up one morning at like 3 am. and caught them with the pickup truck backed up to the back door as they were loading the freezer up, hoping we wouldn't figure it out. Our processor guy also ran the local butcher shop, so he would process your cow for a percentage of the meat. My grandfather had a big goat dairy and I asked my older brothers once, if we ever had goat meat, they kept saying we never did, but I reminded them that our grandparents were always making "stew" and they didn't raise cows, so I'm sure we were having goat stew all the time they just never called it that.

My wife and I raise a cow each year for meat. We figure that we paid about $3 per pound on any cut per se. We included the Vet Bills, Feed (Grain), Processing, etc. We have a mobile processors come to our residence with of course a FDA Inspector. We have make appointments for both. The mobile processor has a 18 wheeler truck and while he's do his thing. The FDA Inspector is doing his job. Our kids are older on their own now. So we split the meat with relatives, as well as donate some to a local food shelter. NOthing wrong with raising your own meat animals. Provided he have the land and facilities to do it. You roughly save about 35%-%38 on your annual meat (for Beef). Raising on your land, opposed to purchasing at a grocery store.

You all are the best and I love the fact that Huston showed how much Big Mack meant to him. He is a special young man. Keep doing what you do and believe in, I’m a goat lover, gardener just love you guys to pieces. You are doing a great thing! I do the same thing with our steer. First one was named Rump Roast and the second wast T-Bone. My son was in FFA all through high school and used the cattle as his SAE project. It has taught my son a lot. My wife thought she could not eat a steer after raising it, but she now looks at it different. She sees exactly how it is raised and what goes into it. We are now raising our 3rd steer to process. Thank you for all your videos, it is a great help with starting my own homestead and how to do it. Thanks Sir.

So originally when I started watching your processing type videos I thought it was horrible. I think it’s just hard when you buy a steak to picture the cow it came from. Now I think it’s nice that you know that animal lived a good life. I’ve just started to raise chickens for meat, I’m a bit nervous about processing them myself but I like the idea that my chickens will live good lives before they are eaten. I would love to branch out to other animals but I’m taking things slowly for now

Big Mac had a better life then most cows have, he was treated extremely well and it would be wonderful if all cows could be treated so well. Its a great lesson to learn for adults and kids the price of the meat you eat is more then dollars it was a living creature once its good to have a respect for that.

Daniel, I agree with you 100%. I did the same thing with my calf's. I let my kids decide on the name for the calf and they were told what was going to happen ahead from the beginning. Yes some of them cried on "Butcher Day" but we celebrated its life and remembered all the good times and the bad times ( like having to feed in the rain and storms ). Did it negatively effect my kids while growing up or as young adults or grown adults, POSITIVELY NOT. They still to this day will talk about those calfs to one another and with us at family functions and with there own kids. All of my sons and daughters ( Three girls and Two boys ) are healthy, happy, well adjusted adults. So congrats to you Daniel for doing the same thing !!!!!!!!!!

I couldn’t watch this video. I just Couldn’t. (I’m from California near L.A.) not too many farms near me. But, I did read the comments. Doing so brought SO MUCH understanding about farm life and raising your own food. And beef in general. I love beef and I love animals so I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about where our meat comes lately, because of you guys. Reading the comments about how well you treated Big Mac, seeing it myself, makes me realize how lucky Big Mac was to be with you, instead of somewhere else. Thanks everyone who commented and helped me understand and not feel bad for Big. He was lucky and will nourish the family for many months to come. 💕

Then, we were allowed wholesale price on that and pork as well

I even had a steer named Big Mack when I was Houston's age, who we raised with love and cried over when he went to the processor. My 8 year old and I watch your videos - and my 82 year old father too - and get so much education and enjoyment out of them! Thank you so much for sharing part of your family's life with us 💜 My 8yr old tells me all the time how he wishes we lived close to you, as he knows he and Houston have a lot in common and, maybe mostly, because he loves fishing and the idea of a creek and pond on our own property would be like heaven for him!! We have trapped, fishes, and hunted and now we have a homestead of our own and they have always been taught that that’s what God puts animals here for us for us to eat! We will love by your motto of they will have a good life while they are with us, we will know what they are eating, and to us that’s the true meaning of the circle of life! Hopefully more people can grasp that and start being self reliant and find that it’s better than visiting and wasting your hard earned money at Walmart with commercial grade meat! Much respect Daniel, it’s a big difference from hunting lions, leopards & rhinos. 3 families are grateful for Big Mac, he’s served his family well and provides. It’s the way it’s done as they say home grown. I barely eat red meat anymore due to your rationale, it just makes sense. Sadly that knowledgeable people don’t get this simple way of life. There wasn’t freezers 2-3 hundred years ago, it could go back more but it would be redundant.
Blessings to Whopper for giving his life for sustaining your family. May he’s life be full of love & care.

Fellow Oklahoman here! My dad has a ranch and in November there was an orphaned Brangus bull calf(mom died giving birth) and my dad brought it to me. Calf got sick and almost died because of lack of colostrum etc.. Now that I got him through that, bottle fed him and everything. He has been in a large enclosure with our outside dog since the day we brought him home and I honestly don't think he knows he's a cow lol, the tamest thing I've ever seen. there is no way I could butcher him now. We were going to use him for meat but I can't but I admire that some can, you feed your family how you can and what is available. Maybe one day I can have the courage to do it myself lol
