    Subscribed. Thank you and well done. On Alex sailing conservatively... he said in a recent video interview that Sir Robin Knox Johnson had told him over and over again "If you want to finish first, first you have to finish." He made him write it on his first boat hull.
    Plus Alex has many sensors on board to know when he is pushing the boat towards the engineering envelope and not exceed it.

      Same here! Really appreciate these videos helping us to understand. This VG is my first exposure to sailing and I've become obsessed! Lol. I am frequently lost due to all the jargon, and honestly having no idea how all these things work except the basic "wind pushes them", but I'm learning a lot.

    One more thing that obviously contributes greatly to the labour intensiveness of the tack or gybe is the "stacking" of sails and other gear to the new windward side of the boat. I think Pip Hare said recently that she had about 500 kg of stuff to move during every manoeuvre!
    Love your coverage on the race by the way. I watch every show!

Made me think of your run down of the three diffent classes of Boats and how there are cirumstances where the traditionan hulls from previous gendres ie, LeCam's dagger board hull does not seam to have such disadvantage. Excellent content and coverage on the Vendée Globe.
    I appreciate how you take the time to explain things in terms that novices and sailors who have never sailed or raced offshore, let alone in “blue waters” can easily understand. Especially so, when in comes to the trade offs that one has to make when sailing such a large boat singlehandedly. Your discussion on gybing and tacking was very much on point.
    I also liked your segment on Jean Le Cam. This could be a segment that you might want to do on your weekly summary of the race, that is to highlight a skipper that has had either a particularly good or bad week.
    Just for the sake of perspective, my comments are as someone that has raced as crew member on 70 foot ocean yacht and having done both a Pacific and Atlantic crossing. Currently, I am participating in the VR Regatta virtual eSailing of the race, which is an excellent way keeping up ones navigation and routing skills. I am using some of the same software that I use out at sea to do my analysis as you seem to be doing too, so I am also enjoying listening to your analysis and comparing our thinking on the subject.
    Thank you again, keep up the good work. Cheers!
    PS: I am usually listening to your video while having my morning coffee.☕️🙂

    Thanks for your input for every nerd around in this business. Amazing videos and ideas. Juts let me suggest you to go deeper into two points 1) completely unusual meteo context for the start (we usually expect to see the whole pack at the doldrums at this stage 2) my perception that a) the leading-pack regular boats (straight-daggerboard boats), as the Le Cam boss, are doing their best (close their 100% tactical and meteo performance), b) the “Hugo Boss” is doing his best meteo tactics out of the red zone of risk, perfect but still conservative and c) the other new boat-designs are pushing since the very beginning with full-confidence in their design performance, choosing their options on their reaching high-speed options. I think it is a question of conservative strategies for Boss and perfect meteo strategies for We Can.

      I see you view. And I'm not saying its not Bad luck also. It's just. There is a reason we don't see some of the boats push far beyond 20 knots of boat speed in the first 5 days. Jeremy was the only one doing that, going 25/26 regularly. It makes a difference if you hit something at 17/18 knots, or at 25/26 knots. If Jeremy had gone through with not issues at all, I would have complimented him on taking the bravest approach and not holding back. But that also means I have to be consistent and mention he's different approach if there is a good chance that it contributed to the extend of the damage to his boat. I'm not saying it did, but there surely is a chance that it did. Alex has been saying that it is front of his mind all the time... IN order to finish first, you have to first finish! There is a reason he is being extra careful.

    Considering the amount of time they spend on port, are these Imocas built asymmetrically at all? Perhaps a tougher starboard foil? Also, we've seen DMG Mori 1 suffer a main rip already, why don't the sailors carry an additional mainsail for these situations? I understand it's a lot more weight, but is it not worth it if something such as this happens?

    Jeremy Beyou hit a floating object which broke one of his rudder
    his ending of the race had nothing to do with bad weather and too much pushing of his boat.
    He was then crossing 25 knots wind which is absolutely no big deal.

    • @williamshimell2940
      @williamshimell2940 3 года назад +1

      The situation was more complex than that. First 'a sheet block tore off, which sprayed carbon all over the cockpit' while he was inside fixing it he hit something damaging the rudder and did an unintentional gybe and then starboard backstay (cable that supports the mast from the rear) broke suddenly. See the report on the vendee globe site. Arguably the first and third of these incidents are down to gear failure due to stress.

    • @BStrapper
      @BStrapper 3 года назад

      @@williamshimell2940 Really nothing complex, one of the rudders hit something, the boat jibed as a result and consequently one backstay broke.
      A damaged sheet block can be replaced without returning to port, not a rudder.
      on 2 month race all racers can tell you there is one problem every day at least.
      Anyway the initial claim was that Beyou broke his boat because he had pushed it too much... That is BS.

      The Hugo Boss boat has a canting keel. It can be used to right an overturned boat.

    • @scoobiedoo2009
      @scoobiedoo2009 3 года назад

      Yes the boats are fitted with "canting keels" for which the angle is adjusted by hydraulic rams to give optimum heel - in addition, the foils also give righting moments (the lee foil in the water gives lift, while the windward foil in the air adds outboard weight) - the canting keels are game-changers but are obviously more delicate compared to their fixed counterparts - incredibly strong but incredibly vulnerable!
      Enjoy the race!

    • @mistrzfuji
      @mistrzfuji 3 года назад

      Thanks for reply. In case of the foiling imocas you get wide cantilever with lift, similarly to catamarans or America's Cup foilers, which don't have a keel at all. Moreover the foils and hulls are constructed for a certain optimum heel (i guess Hugo Boss with the circular foil design is more flexible)

    The fastest boats should be able to hit higher downwind speeds than you said... as far as I checked it looks like: old boats 12-16 kts, upgraded boats 16-24 kts, modern ones 26-34 kts. We will see during the race ;) Nice video!

      Just from watching him, he seems very salt of the earth (or of the sea, perhaps!), and from what I've gathered he's not necessarily interested in the kind of networking and ass-kissing that that entails. He just wants to sail, dammit! I think perhaps some also think he's too old. They think he won't be able to do it physically, so they don't think he can win and thus don't want to sponsor him. Which he's proving is BS! As he said in a French interview, "Papy fait de la résistance !" (Grampa's resisting! - also a reference to a famous French film of the early 80s)

    I guess they must have water desalination systems... They obviously don't have clean clothes for 3 months, so they must do laundry. But you don't want salty underwear rubbing against your skin ... So many other everyday questions that are too obvious to think of

      You can buy merino wool base layers. These things just do not smell. As a test once I used a merino wool top as a base layer to cycle to work. It got seriously sweaty twice a day but did not smell even after a month. The white salt patch just got larger when dried every day.

      @@bettycamacho7084 The more interesting question is *HOW* they do it! Lol I read a French article on that. It can be a complicated affair apparently, but basically they usually have a bucket to do that in. It's the only waste they are allowed to throw overboard, in bags made from a kind of starch, which dissolves within 24 hours in the water. The rest of their trash they take back with them.

      I've seen tours of a couple of the boats and they do have desalination units on board. It tends to be a slow process, though - drip, drip, drip, into a very small reservoir. No idea about laundry, though. A couple of them mentioned today that they needed showers after a week (Rouvas' video was hilarious, but so were his others!) and several of them said it felt good to change clothes finally after the chaotic first week.
