    A lot of times in line breeding it’s a one off situation, not necessarily something needing to be continued for 5 decades. Sounds like what’s happening here is first line relatives are being used until poor traits are showing through and then a distant relative is being reintroduced to start the cycle over again. Exclusiveness isn’t always healthy or sustainable for a group. A quote from when I was studying genomics stands out. “Line breeding is when it works. Inbreeding is when it fails”

    • @michaoz1002
      @michaoz1002 2 года назад

      also in general line breeding tends to use further relatives I think?
      like second cousins instead of siblings

    • @tanneradams20
      @tanneradams20 2 года назад +1

      @@michaoz1002 for the most part that’s correct. Sometimes it might utilize half siblings, but new genetics are almost always added after to prevent homozygosity. Which seems to be what’s happening when they have a cullable generation. There’s a good chance that animal or group of animals are “undesirable” simply because of the fixation of bad genetics within their own bloodline.

      Line breeding is literally how every animal breed was created.

    • @tanneradams20
      @tanneradams20 Год назад +2

      @@ScotchIrishHoundsman I can agree, but it was ended when the desired trait was met. In this case it is continued. Genetic diversity is key. Here there is none.

    • @ScotchIrishHoundsman
      @ScotchIrishHoundsman Год назад

      @@tanneradams20 there are risks, but if you select your breeders based on health, you won’t have a problem. The issue is when people don’t properly cull. Culling is like 90% of breeding.

    Thank you for providing such interesting content. You’ve broadened my horizons once again! I also want to say that whenever you do these interview type vids, your guests will be explaining something and a question will run through my mind and you always ask them to explain further on exactly what I wanted.
    On another note, fascinating insight into pig husbandry. Similarly, the process of creating pure bred dogs involves interfamily breeding. We now isolate plenty of genetic predispositions to certain diseases in breeds that are the result of such practices. Obviously, the benefit must outweigh the risks, but it surely rubs me the wrong way.
    Anyway, I enjoy seeing everything you get into. I hope I’m able to take a similar journey one day.

      Difficult to replace, but leaving chickens in an area for a long time can have a similar effect for disturbance and fertility.

    Could you explain why you'd select for a slow-maturing pig? I know from poultry that some of the fast growers have issues with heart attack, tumors, etc. Is the rationale the same? I'd be afraid that feeding it for so much longer would destroy any potential profits...

    • @NaturesAlwaysRight
      @NaturesAlwaysRight  2 года назад +2

      Depends what you are breeding for. Are you breeding for boars, for sows, for feeders? They use certain boars and sows to create their feeder pigs they raise out vs breeding for breed stock pigs. When they find fast growing traits they use those to produce feeders. Sometimes they want to produce high quality sows that will live a long time and have big litters that is a desirable trait too etc. All depends on what the breeder is trying to achieve.

    I'm a cat breeder and I wish we did line breeding. Inbreeding is frowned upon and you are considered an evil backyard breeder if your kitten has more than one shared great-grandparent. I think that this is just passing the buck and letting the bad recessives accumulate where they can't be watched. If I would not be kicked out of the breeding community I would be line breeding my one queen who has all the characteristics I want, never fails to take when bred, and is super healthy. If I was doing line breeding I could also more easily breed for length of life, by knowing with more certainty that the babies of long lives, would have long lives themselves. Right now it is virtually pointless because by the time a queen cat has lived an extra-long life, it is no good for breeding, and its genes will be very diluted in any descendants that are still fertile.
