how did her son die?
@@BeautyRepublicUnited he drowned. When they went to the beach the ocean waves were to much the Cousin/nanny to her son claims she looked away for a second and they could never find his body.
@@shadowgirl6385 Thank you for replying! It is messed that she went without the boy, she should have told her over the phone and not make her suffer waiting for him to come out....that was messed up.
i also really think at the end when kathleen says “be careful, she is pregnant” she is aware of the rebirth that took place
If you catch the timing of the “haunting” by Mami Wata/La Sirene and Anansi didn’t begin until Lamine transitioned. I think he drowned the day she did that overnight surprise party for the husband. Her cousins video said “ before we leave the beach tell mommy bye” Also I dont think that the cousin was ever going to tell her Lamine died. She was caught trying to catch a cab. She took all the cash she was sending for herself. She wanted to be in the US.
You explained that perfectly.
Wow... I did not understand that whole moment til u just explained. How were u just coming to the US and bypassing her without explaining!?! Just sinister
@@niaonieaidoo5847 extremely sinister. And even blamed Aisha by saying it wouldn’t have happened if you had sent the money sooner. I think Lamine was also making his presence known to her every time she allowed her boundaries to be usurped by Amy and her husband.
Hated the cousin HATE HATE HATE 😡😡😡
She spoke on the phone with Lamine tho, way after the surprise party.
So I don't think that's what happened.
There was a conversation happening just before Aisha saw her son at ay the park (when he wasn't really there) under the sprinklers. The other two Nanny's were talking about another nanny who went crazy and cut the child ear to ear.
Sounds like an eye for an eye, the spirits just wanting blood.
I also think that after he drowned he showed Aisha in many ways how to “rebirth” herself and that final drowning scene at the pier was the full rebirth. But I’d like to point out that when Aisha lost Rose at the park & Lamine showed up by the sprinklers (notice he always showed up near water or in the form of water - hence the connection to how he died - drowning) it was similar to how the Cousin might’ve lost Lamine when they went to the beach . So he was in a way showing her that it only takes a few seconds & a child/person watching the child’s life could change in an instant as that’s what happened to him & why he drowned. So like Rose said, Lamine was jealous so he might’ve done the distraction at the park so Aisha could see what it felt like to be in his & the cousin’s shoes.
This makes so much sense !
I HATED how her cousin didn’t care for her son and how she took advantage of her… HATE HATE HATE 😡😡😡
Yeah, and then she had the audacity to tell Aisha “if you had only sent the money EARLIER (for his plane ticket/passport) then your son wouldn’t have drowned/died”.
The physical violence I would unleash on the cousin would get me put away for life or locked up in a psych ward...

As a nanny myself, it peak my interest when I saw it on Amazon. The movie correctly depicts the working environment of domestic workers. I have experienced this and know of others who had similar stories with the family they work for. Thank you for your explanation, it is accurate.
Yeah I had the feeling it understood its subject matter because of how authentic it was with the African characters and West African symbols. I’m so glad it got the Nanny aspect right, it really seems like the filmmaker took this seriously. Thanks so much for bringing this up, and thank you for watching!!
Yup I said the same the depicts so much that goes on in real life with a lot of immigrant Nannies! I’ve heard suck horror stories you’d cry ur eyes out or make u want to fight the employees urself!!
I appreciate the explanation of why the spirit s are haunting her to warn her and help her.
Yeah that was my favorite aspect of the movie, it was a nice twist on supernatural horror. So happy it helped, thank you!
Wow. This was a great analysis, thank you! I was so confused at the end.
So happy to hear you enjoyed, and if I can clear up any confusion, it's always a really fulfilling feeling, so thank you so much!!
Literally just finished watching this movie and although I enjoyed I was stumped trying to piece all the pieces together to figure out the overall meaning of the film so I hopped on here to find any discussion of the film and I feel like you and your video explains it so perfectly, waaaay better than I could have comprehend on my own, and the research you did for this film analysis video was incredible and it doesn’t go unnoticed (excuse the lengthy comment I just felt the need to share my appreciation😭) thank you for this video you did an amazing job, truly ♥️♥️♥️

I’m glad that I looked on youtube for a review! I looked at Roger Ebert’s and was disappointed to the point I wasn’t going to watch it. But This! Perfectly explained. Powerful culture lesson too. Thank you. ❤
Yeah so many moments felt really authentic like the hairdresser scene, the actors were perfect. And the supernatural approach was fresh. Very much a cultural lesson, so glad u saw it, and thank you so much for watching this!

Wow that was a dynamite review !! Thank you!! I will share this with a few people in my circle of family and friends who enjoy movies and appreciate an intelligent analysis
Wow….your review of this movie made me want to watch it again, and it was absolutely incredible the 2nd time around. It truly is an amazing movie and I know now why the writer/directors won last years Sundance film festival’s best movie 🎥❤
We appreciate your reviews. God bless you.
So happy to hear you enjoy them, thank you so much!
Excellent insight.
Thank you!!
This is such a great analysis! I'd missed a few things, but I loved the movie nonetheless ❤
Thank you! And so glad you loved it!!
Interesting analysis. If you haven't already, you should look into the case of the Krim children in New York. It may have been some inspiration for this story, especially the bathtub element. There is a novel about the case, titled "The Perfect Nanny," which was made into a French film, "Lullaby." Curiously, there hasn't yet been an accurate film made from the events, always changing the casting and climax. There could be some messy politics involved.
Thanks you for this❤
My pleasure, thank you for watching!
I love your break down. Even better, watching the movie - I wasn't lost and totally understood but didn't know the history and symbolism of the spirts.
Same!!!
Great video... what a movie.
Thank you! And yeah, the film was great!
you AATEEEEE this
hahaha thank you, this means a lot!
Aisha is so beautiful
Yeah this actress is gorgeous!
thx for the breakdown, LB. i thought aisha was just being haunted by evil spirits pretty much like in any other supernat. horror film out there plus the wage-thieving white liberal couple of course. i didn't get the foreboding water-metaphor at all until the gutwrenching end. final questions for me: 1) ya talk about it at the very end, does her pregnancy constitute a rebirth for her or for her son? 2) what does rose represent in the story as there's hint towards a (supernat.) connection b/w her & lamine?
I'd like to request Apocalypto. If you haven't seen it already, you'll love it.
Is that the one with Mel Gibson? I haven’t seen it and never thought it would be conceptual. I’ve always heard really good things (apparently it’s super underrated) so I’m adding it to my classics watchlist, thank you for this!!
@@lucasblue20 Yup. You'll thank me later lol.
Beautiful explanation. I comprehended what the movie was about but the ending was terrible it didn’t line up as well as the build up
I think the ending was rushed but still a good film.
This movie is so amazing 100/100
I liked it, even though it was sad 😢. Aisha is beautiful.
I re-watched the film. I believe the grandma knew when Lamine transitioned
Who is the song by ?
It’s called “Fully Lost, Fully Found” by Yatta Zoker. Thank you for watching!
@@lucasblue20 Thanks.
I love that it shows a cultural spiritualism that accurately represents the difference between the constant Christian images of rebirth and other equally valid beliefs. It represents the position of so many hard working immigrants versus those who think that are repressed but really have no idea what it is.
We want you to analyze Under The Silverlake 😈
This is true haha ok I promise that the next Classic Explained poll will include Under The Silver Lake. I’ve written it down, I just don’t know when I’ll drop that poll, likely in early 2023. Thank you for letting me know!
I was confused at the end
Yeah I missed 100% of all that.
Me too
There’s only a few positive comments, the ones posted here, weird.
But what did the auntie who was taking care of her son say to her about her son’s passing?
She said her son drowned and she didn't know how to tell her. If you tirn in subtitles on that oart of the movie, you'll see what she says in English.
Red dress...was a insult 😢 did anyone pick that up?
I recommend The Lamb
I’ve still never seen Lamb haha but I will, I’ve added it to my polls watchlist list! Thank you!!
how did her son die?
Drowned
Didnt enjoy this movie at all, misleading to put this under horror.
I thought it was horrible
I didn't like it. It was boring and I hate when movies too heavily rely on hallucinations and dream sequences. It starts too get old really fast when they do too much of it.
The movie was simply not good.
Exactly...and if a "spirit" has to damn near kill you to send a message, you need new "spirits". Also..any woman will tell you having another child does not take sorrow from your first dead child. Dumb movie.
@@Only1SunnySecular yes there are much better ways to allow themes into the story to better explain the plot ect. Problem here is that there is no real plot to explain.
@@Only1SunnySecular I think that’s subjective. He didn’t try to kill her but maybe show her so she could feel him. Lamine wasn’t w/ her for nearly a full year. So he missed his mom, her presence, physical being etc… but he also probably needed a way to make his presence known. Spirits don’t have an easy way of letting themselves be known. That’s why some “haunt” doesn’t mean it’s a bad spirit, but they can’t just touch our shoulder or open the door & say “hey it’s me”. He died in a violent way so that could be why he felt the need to damn near drown her.
Also some people don’t make a new pregnancy some sort of miracle or even a saving grace to replace their other child. That could very well be Lamine’s spirit being rebirthed, or just simply a way for him to move on. It’s not like Aisha even knew she was pregnant, got pregnant on purpose nor did we see her fully accept her first child’s death fully cause that’s where the movie ends. We don’t even see that second child born yet. Correct it doesn’t take away the sorrow but I don’t think that was even the intention of her being pregnant being mentioned. We saw her grieve the beginning stage yes but death of a child will always have a chokehold until the day the mother dies (& don’t forget she did try to kill herself).
Woah nailed that
Thank you, thank you for it inciteful, helpful and logical meaning of this movie. Thank you for the historical background of African folklore and the meaning of the spirits and how it is intertwined with the movie.. You did an job! I was confused about the ending but you helped bring it all together. I had looked at other peoples thoughts botz online but yours was the one that hit home. Great job!
