Some Other Time - Debbie Duncan

  • Shortly after moving to the Twin Cities in 1988, a student of mine bought me a ticket to a Herbie Hancock concert. The opening act was a life-changing experience: It was Debbie Duncan.
Two years later, Gary Raynor gave me my first chance to sub in her band. Then there were more gigs with her and, in 1992, when trumpeter Bernie Edstrom and I started my “small” big band we brought Debbie as the featured vocalist. Lowell Picket, the owner of the old Dakota Jazz club (then in Bandana Square in St. Paul), gave us a time slot for one Sunday afternoon show. That one Sunday turned into a 2-year stint. The band was fantastic and Debbie gave it all she got - week after week. The musical “highs” that I experienced with Debbie and the band was immense and so was the chemistry that Debbie and I have developed from that point on.
We became and remained close friends all the way to the end. This year has marked my 30-year collaboration with this remarkable human being. During that time we had played hundreds of shows, I have arranged and produced all 5 of her records and we still had big plans that were cut short. As I mentioned, having Debbie in my life was a life-changing experience and now, parting from her will be too.
This song that Debbie recorded in 1992 with my band has a completely different meaning now.
Thank you for all you brought to my life, my sister Deb!
    Musicians:
Brian Grivna, Dave Karr, Kenni Holmen, Dennis Scholtes - Saxes.
Bernie Edstrom, Bob Hallgrimson, Greg Lewis - Trumpets
Peter Enblom, Dave Graf - Trombones
    Adi Yeshaya - Piano
    Gary Raynor - Acoustic Bass
    Joe Pulice - Drums
(Gordy Johnson and Pete Whitman played on several gigs and can be seen on the Dakota gig photos)

Thank you Adi for your RUclips posting. I remember Debbie had a lot of Appreciation and admiration for you as her friend and musical partner. I am missing her tremendously tonight as I sit here in Hawaii remembering tender moments with Debbie.

Thanks for posting this, Adi. It brought back so many fond memories. My private teacher at the time was Brian Grivna, so I spent many Sundays at the Dakota listening to your band with Debby. That group of musicians, local heroes, had a profound influence on me, especially Debbie and Brian. I still have the actual CD with this track on it and have listened to it dozens of times. I am so sorry for your loss and that she's not with us anymore.
