This song has it all. Great vocals, lyrics, musical arrangements, rhythms/beat melody, and full of SOUL dripping from each instrument. Great Choice. Thanks.
SCOTTISH SOUL...
@aliasmark69 it's literally the perfect song..
doesn't have cow bell
I have 16 Cow Bells on my 168 piece drum kit.@@sparksdrinker5650
The saxophone in this song is what you call ICONIC,
One of the best singer songwriters to have come out of Scotland.
Sherlock Holmes lived on Baker Street in London
The Guess Who - "These Eyes"
Passed through Baker Street station on the tube in London yesterday and this song immediately stuck in my head and stayed there all day. Then this appeared in my RUclips feed. Spooky.
You’re lucky. 😊
A rolling stone refers to someone who is restless and can't settle or put down roots anywhere. It's interesting that you interpreted it as being an alcoholic. Gerry Rafferty himself was an alcoholic and eventually died as a result of that. This song is meant to be about London where he had to come to speak to his record company after the band he was in broke up. The company would not let him produce his own solo work which depressed and stressed him. His home was in Scotland. The reference to his 'friend' might well have been a reference to himself and his own thoughts.
As the lyric says, his friend owned a flat in Baker St and it was the friend who the lyrics refer to re Rolling Stone and buying land etc.
@@AlanRafferty o.k
The scene is the late 60's, Baker Street, London. The song is, was and for always, will be about Rafferty and his illness. At some point the illness takes you over, mind, body and soul. He knew this about himself, and he told the world about it in this song. Millions have heard this, I heard it, it moved me, it made me cry, because Gerry and I were as one with the sickness. It was a gift given and I took it and I never looked back. God loves Gerry Rafferty.
The famous saxophone break was performed by Raphael Ravenscroft. A story claimed that he received no payment for a song that earned Rafferty £80,000 every year, and that a cheque for £27 bounced and was framed and hung on his solicitor's wall. However, the bouncing cheque story was denied by Ravenscroft in 2012.
It was alleged that Ravenscroft took Rafferty to court for payment because he claimed that he wrote the sax lines, but the defence lawyer had Rafferty's original guitar part played to the court and persuaded it that GR had indeed composed every band part.
He is a good one. He was part of the band Stealers Wheel...Stuck in the Middle with You. This lovely wonder has another song that you may enjoy: Right Down the Line. Thank you for sharing this one.
RIP Gerry Rafferty We love You and We miss You and RIP you too Raphael Ravenscroft the man on the saxophone.
The city desert makes you feel so cold;
it's got so many people but it's got no soul.
You should react to Year of the Cat by Al Stewart. Great lyrics, outstanding music, beautiful vocals. You'll love the sax too
And that line ‘she came out of the sun in a silk dress flowing like a watercolour,in the rain’
Great track.
I agree that you need to hear "Year Of The Cat". It is my all time number one favorite song. I could listen to it every day and never get tired of it. I also recommend "On The Border" and "Time Passages".
Todd Rungren - "Hello, It's Me"
'Bang the Drum All Day'
Pop rock masterpiece.
My day is made, love this song
Iconic. Pure and simple.
I agree you also need to hear "Right Down The Line". It's a great love song written for his wife.
In my opinion JMBOY, words can't describe this song. Everything about it is so together. Gerry's voice, the lyrics, the music, especially that SAX and then the guitar follows it up. What else can I say.
Such an underrated song. I remember when it came out I was a real rock head but I heard this and I couldn’t deny it’s greatness.
Underrated by who ?
Hall & Oates - "She's Gone"
Just love that saxophone.
How can anyone not like this?
This is a classic rock song. Wonderful and I love the sax. Just about perfect.
Great tune. Great reaction. Still looking forward to seeing you hearing the original version of Smooth with Rob Thomas and Carlos Santana. It's really good. I think you will enjoy it. All the best to you and yours.
Always a great go to if you just want a good 6 minute music break🇨🇦🇨🇦
Rafferty was a genius.🏴🏴
Raphael Ravenscroft was the sax player. He went on to play with Chris Rea, Ian Gomm, Alvin Lee, Pink Floyd, Robert Plant, Marvin Gaye, ABBA, Kim Carnes, Red Rider, Mike Oldfield, Roger Waters, Willie & The Poor Boys, and Phil Collins' Brand X, in addition to two more LPs by Rafferty
You're right, I think it's autobiographical. He has another good song called, "Right Down the Line." Thanks for your channel.
I got a 45 in 1978 with this song!
Now...THIS IS my all Time Favorite Song! Its got it all, smooth grooves, nice Bongo Beats, Sweet Flutes, Smokin Hot Guitar, excellent Vocals and ...DAMN MAN...that Sax Hits Ya right in the Soul!
Music is Magical... We all agree. In 1965 a group led by John Sebastian - The Lovin' Spoonful did a song that best describes the magic music has. This is one of those MUST HEAR if you want to know one of the most influential songs in the history of R&R.... The Lovin' Spoonful - "Do You Believe In Magic"
ruclips.net/video/65L1hVSGkGM/видео.html
I agree Mark - a seriously influential song that was also a lot of fun. I remember watching them on Ed Sullivan with Zal romping around while John hugs the autoharp. Thanks for bringing back the memories!
Great Gerry Rafferty song. A few of my favorites from him are: "Right Down the Line", "Home and Dry" and "Get it Right the Next time",
MASSIVE MTV HIT..... Nuf said.
Excellent reaction and analysis.
Thank you for playing this. I haven’t heard this in years and I really enjoyed it. Please react to Jeff Beck, he was a phenomenal guitarist. Jeff Beck-A Day in the Life-Live At Ronnie Scott’s is good but you can’t miss with any Jeff Beck performance.
Great Old Song! Great Respectful Reaction you Gave as Well. This Song takes me Back to a Time in my life, when Many Transictions were Occurring! Going from JR. High, to Highschool! Moving from one City to Another! And Several other things I won't Mention here! But when I hear this song Start, It Always makes me Smile 😁. And that SAX 🎷 comes in like An EXPLOSION ! I've always liked this Song. His other Song from this same Album, Right Down the Line, is Pretty good Too! 🎶
You find the BEST music!!! Takes me back, and I'm loving it! Thank you!!! 🙂
Hey JM a great choice to react to Baker Street, it really is a song that has everything, a couple more that show Gerry's great songwriting and performing skills from the same period are Get It Right Next Time and the beautiful Night Owl which is an absolute gem, sure you'll enjoy them both.
A rolling stone gathers no moss! About someone who can’t stay still and keeps moving..doesn’t plant roots anywhere
R I p Jerry. You've earned it.
Great song, great reaction!
I preferred your hearing it through rather than stops. Your facial expressions are the true reactions!
That's the best sax that my ears ever had.
Main Street by Bob Seeger is great.
One of the best sax solos
And 'Time Passages' - Al Stewart, also 'Change of Heart' by David Sanborn... 😘
☮️💙💙💙🔥🔥😎my favorite
ZZ Top La grange, Tush Live In Montreux 2013
ruclips.net/video/kxOOC2Wf1rQ/видео.html
My favourite song of all time, I was always a huge fan of Steelers Wheel.
I am a very proud Scot. So many great artists came out of Scotland. Even the Average White Band.
Timeless masterpiece
That sax makes me want to get out of debt and start a 401K (Dave Ramsey's theme song).
The Guitar Solo is Actually Ranked in the Top 100 of All Time!
as it should be my friend
thanks, JMboy.. one of my very favorite evocative songs.. I remember hearing it for the first time, driving home from work at age 18.. along the Milwaukee lakefront.. out early on a Friday afternoon, check cashed.. whole weekend (and whole LIFE) ahead.. the sun and the breeze.. windows. down.. takes me back every time... lol... appreciate your listen..!! (p.s. did you know that Gerry was the lead singer to "Stealers Wheel".. Stuck in the Middle with you?)
it's Gerry -- (not Jerry) ....
about that sax player solo intro --- in an interview - the sax player said it was his idea -- when in fact Gerry exposed him in a practice recording session how he wanted the sax sounded by humming the parts -- and throughout the song ...
Gerry Rafferty --- R.I.P. ....
Deep dive into Gerry will not disappoint. Prolific artist and songwriter.
No matter what you did, done, tried! Best 'moving home' period!
Love this❤
I really like your takes on songs. You not only seem to get it, but you explain your takes concisely. Now listen to Pat Travers' "Hooked on Music" from his live album Go For What You Know.
I’d bring him on board THAT particular train first with Too Rolling Stoned, then move on to the incredible sounds he got from those strings.
Sorry,my bad,got it in my head you were talking about Robin Trower.
Sorry.
@@TheCornishCockney
Never apologize for mentioning Trower. "Too Rolling Stoned" is one of my favorite songs. But that live Pat Travers Album, like Trower's, is one of the best live albums ever recorded.
I think of 9/11 when I hear "Baker Street." The haunting, huge sax solo reminds me of the planes hitting the Twin Towers in those giant explosions. Or a nuclear apocalypse. This music and lyrics is the sound of tragedy. This music is the sound of fear, pain and suffering. Especially fear.
great song! ♥
The Baker Street is in London England where Gerry used to live when he came down from Scotland as a young man.
A rolling stone gathers no moss.
What a perceptive man you are. You got the full meaning of this masterpiece instantly. From the musical composition to the lyrics. An excellent reaction and concise interpretation. That is why I want to subscribe.
Brings back memories of bar/lounges and long road trips.
Easy Listening vibe. 🫶
45 years and it still gives me goosebumps, totally an addict’s lament, you see what you are doing and where you are headed and you still can’t stop it
I remember when this sing came out. You had to buy the album, or if you were a kid like me w no money, hope it came on the radio. Remember it like yesterday
The anthem for my teenage years
Gentle for it's time but I love it more and more as I get older. It's just so well done and so real.
Love your studio ... Looks Awesome ✌️
This song is beautiful (well written) but that sax player lettin’ us know who boss 🤩
Driving in my car listening to ZZ Top and thought... This will BLOW JM's Mind and show him who these three guys really are... ZZ Top - "Dirty Dog"
ruclips.net/video/dwpEs81GzZ4/видео.html
Baker street, in London, in the # 12 is where Sherlock Holmes had his home/office.
Great reaction...you held all your comments for the end. You might be a good looking guy (no, I'm streight), but if you made the music video larger, it would enhance your reactions and entertainment for your viewers.
Another great song, lyrics and story telling, based on Marc Cohen's visit (to): "Walkin' in Memphis", about his memorable visit to that town, it's definitely worth listening to, you'll really appreciate it (I believe.. sincerely).
This track is easily in the top 5 tracks from the year 1979 yet had no chorus. Goes to show how times changed drastically only a couple year afterwards
If you liked this one , I would love to see your reaction to Gerry Rafferty sing Shipyard Town, his 2nd best song IMO. Awesome video also.
The city is London.
This song is like a frosty cold beer at a hot summer backyard Bar-B-Que. It' always makes you feel good.
💫🎷🎶🎸✨
Probably among my all-time favorite songs....the story line of lyrics, is weirdly familiar if you know the life of Gerry Rafferty.
Reminds me of Take Five.

Well done you kept your comments until the end of the music. I find it most annoying when the music gets stopped midway for some inane comment.
Pity the vid is flipped horizontally...
I can't listen to this anymore because GR made £80k a year in royalties from this and the sax player got paid £25 by cheque and it bounced. Blame Gerry s management but still makes me upset
There is one thing in this song I cant stand. That repetitive Deeew sound drives me nuts. Not sure why, it's very prominant in my ear. However the Sax riff is legendary.
