I don't think Diablo-like RPGs really appeal to me. I don't like the classes in this game, especially the names. Like the Diablo games, what really interest me are the enemy designs and models, but we don't get much time with that. Thanks for the video.
Great idea but terribly executed. They rushed release with unfinished lore/story / infinite scaling difficulty infected with one shot mechanics on bosses and the whole thing feels like a grind for the sake of grind only to get weaker as you advance. Cakewalk campaign with 2 ridiculously overtuned bosses by the end that act as "build check". The devs think of themselves as the gods of rpg and act as if they path of exile 3 , all they do is watxh Raxanteraxx min maxing builds and make small "fixes". There hasnt been any real content added since 3 years.
I'm so glad that they included an Offline Mode. This elevates the game up a lot in my eyes. It means that if the servers close down, the game isn't deleted. Plus you can play in a place without internet. Every game with a single player option should have an Offline Mode.
@@Randomonium66 I wonder why the save file isn't being saved locally and on the cloud/server. Strange design choice. At least you can still play it offline.
My favorite arpg at the moment, thanks for covering! My favorite part of this game by a mile is the individual skill trees per each ability, the customization without needing a guide feels amazing. The visual progression of items is probably one of my biggest complaints of the game, I felt like my whole necromancer playthrough I looked about the same.
true, this is pretty much the only arpg where I've felt compelled to experiment, try out new skills, actually think about the stats I want to invest in and try to come up with fun builds by myself. Pretty much every other similar game I've tried, I end up looking up guides at some point because figuring out all the right skills/stats feels like a chore.
100%. The skill system is imo the best of any aRPG to date! The game is excellent but I also agree the visual progression is a downer. Also, no character customization and gender lock is kinda disappointing but you can't have everything.
I bought the game in early access back in 2021, and have been playing it and watching it progress through mutliple patches, so it's interesting to hear first impressions from those who are only just now trying it out with 1.0. I love Last Epoch. I think it's my favorite ARPG- I really love how the skill customization and progression works, how approachable the crafting is, and how they're able to have the classic distinct fantasy character archetypes but allow for wide variety of endgame-viable builds for each one. As to the campaign's ending- the reason it's not so satisfying is that the story is not actually done yet. The plan is for there to be 12 acts, but currently there's only 9. It's weird to have a 1.0 release without the main story actually being finished, but my guess is they decided that they needed to get their hooks in people with the 1.0 release before POE 2 claimed all the market, and also that it was more important to devote their resources to overhauling the earlier acts in the game and general polish than it was to create the final acts. Graphically, this game has improved so much since when I first go it. Every patch they've done has added further and further polish to the look and presentation. It does stink that there's not more variety in the look of gear, but it's actually significantly better now than when I first got it. They've been gradually adding more and more armor sets for the classes and have made unique models for all the unique weapons (when I got it in EA most of the unique weapons still looked like the regular ones), so hopefully in the future they'll eventually get unique models for all the unique armor as well.
Now that I've actually finished the video now: the endgame is very satisfying and, 30h and 80 levels into the game, I still feel like I'm always making some sort of progress that's not gold, XP or items alone. Last Epoch is honestly a great game that deserves every ARPG fan's attention. Oh, except the most hardcore of PoE players, those should just stick to PoE. Or at least leave Last Epoch's global chat alone. We get it, PoE is the best! Move along now.
I agree 100% about visual progression being a very important part of the genre. Even in Diablo 1 where the models were limited, you felt like you had legitimately gone up a tier once you found the new gear for your class. Sadly, from speaking with a lot of people that primarily play Path of Exile they couldn't care less if the character model was just a stick figure, so I don't think the "hardcore" playerbase cares at all about visuals. This is kind of shown with Median XL's popularity; where everything is an asset ripped straight from somewhere else and the aesthetics clash into one of the ugliest programs I've ever run on my desktop... It was enough to nope out of that and try Project Diablo 2 instead lol.
Having played the game multiple times during EA and now upon release, I feel that despite being a very small studio, very inexperienced as devs (at least at the start of the development), they nailed the class fantasy of each class + their masteries. A rogue feels like a rogue should, but then it's masteries further enhance that class fantasy. It's reflected in the skills themselves, in the icons, in the specific gear for those masteries. You would think it's a given in an ARPG, but studios such as Blizzard seem to have lost their touch and, imo, seem to shy away from trying anything radically new. LE, on the other hand, goes hard when answering the question "Wouldn't that be fun?" The gameplay is so different between the masteries of each character and yet feels so natural during the moment-to-moment gameplay. Playing any mastery I always think that this is how I imagined this class would play like. The Acolyte, for example, can either become a lich, a necromancer or a warlock. And the gameplay is so radically different between them because they all have their unique skills and passive trees & gameplay loop. The lich is the embodiment of death itself, focuses on sweeping around in the death form with giant scythes. The necromancer, as you'd guess, is surrounded by a horde of minions (skeletal or otherwise) that all do different things. While warlock focuses on cursing everything that moves, stacking debuffs onto targets until they die of horrible pain. The last mastery also seems to be themed around Lovecraft's mythos with skills like Chthonic fissure. Yes, Eleventh Hour Games' budget is way less than that of Blizzard or GGG, so they can't pour millions into the art/animation/visual design departments, that's why the game lacks those high quality animations, graphics, etc. Also, the game is made in Unity, handicapping the entire graphics pipeline, so it'll never look as good as D4 or PoE or other compiled language runtimes. Despite all that, EHG succeeded in making a fun & addicting ARPG, on their first try, which is an insane achievement. They succeeded even where giants such a Blizzard fell flat on their face recently. And beyond 1.0, I think LE will continue to improve and will become a classic like Grim Dawn, I'm sure of it.
Grim Dawn, PoE, and Diablo 2 are the best in the genre, with GD probably being my favorite. I haven't played much of Last Epoch since 1.0 dropped, and I haven't been to endgame yet, but I like it enough to keep playing. Having an offline mode is a definite plus. They all should have that. LE does a lot of things right...But there's something off about the combat for me and it has some weird bugs and quirks.
11:17 - Yes. It does. I'm playing as fire/ice mage and when I need to use my crowd control proc (snap freeze + meteor), first a have to fully stop my char, use freeze, and then meteor. I can't use freeze while walking. This is terrible specially when using low max HP chars like my mage. I notice this issue since the first time playing it in early access. Also, I didnt finished the 1.0, but from what I could see, the main campain isnt finished yet.
Last Epoch is my favorite ARPG due to it's high synergy between skill trees. The intereactions you can build into with your skills tress and uniques items is second to none. Also it has the best crafting in any ARPG.
PoE? I do prefer last epoch because PoE is just overwhelming and always find myself frozen with indecision which for me can lead to impatience and frustration
@@peacefindersimply5001 PoE is not the game for me. It's actually one of my least favorite arpgs. LE > GD > D2 > POE > D4. If I had to rank. LE is going places that's for sure. Now that 1.0 is done and all the masteries are in the game and multiplayer is somewhat functional, they can focus on adding some more endgame systems.
I'm pretty sure unique armor models are something they've been slowly working on for a while, and just haven't gotten to everything yet. A lot of the weapons do have in-game models though, but it wasn't a priority for beta.
I completely agree with your review. I think the two biggest issues with the game are the ones you mentioned: difficulty curve is way off (the game is too one shotty both for players and mobs) and the lack of visual progression for your character. Other than that, the game is great and it's got tons of potential.
Pretty much agree with all you said, I`ve been having a lot of fun with the game and I`m excited to see what they will add in the next few seasons, they mentioned more endgame content, and they also want to design more masteries, that`s gonna be a lot of fun. This game will keep me busy until Fangs of Asterkarn releases later this year.
You can adjust the camera zoom a little through the up/down direction pad on your controller or through the mouse wheel. I didn't get into the end game grind but this the most fun i had in an arpg sense Diablo 2.
I play all ARPGs with a controller if it's possible these days, it's just easier to control my character's movement accurately and I don't have to worry about straining my hand pressing down the left mouse button all the time.
@@nikkyyxo Not sure about that, but it works on Titan Quest, Grim Dawn, Diablo 2 remaster, 3, and 4. All of them are nicer to play on a controller IMO.
beginnign 5:15 in order - all deaths due to missin resistances 1. poison 2+3 Necrotic 4 fire - necrotic and poison is tricky because they are not "elemental resistances"
Hes also playing VK so a leech based glass cannon type. Its powerful sure, but unless your armor and res's are up to par youll see plenty of gameovers when you misstep
lack or interesting looking items outside of the store killed all my interest in getting this game. it's a tactic to get people to buy cosmetics and D4 is playing it hard right now. instead of enriching the game with stuff that would be exciting to find while playing, all the good stuff is put on the in-game store and the less appealing stuff left in-game so players are left desiring better looking gear. maybe it's just the state of the game at the time of this video, but having icons that misrepresent the items is pretty weird with that monetization tactic going on. game companies are manipulating the minds of players to extract income
Really good talk and video :D They should listen for sure I definetly agree with the cosmetic when leveling up and unique and really cool looking items so everyone can see
A lot of animation vividness and numbers. 11:53 is exactly describes your feeling upon loosing HC character. The game speed is high as if it was set to 200% or the only stat you ever improved was the speed. Playing a glass cannons this fast would make me physically exhausted. Human brain is bad at reacting and good at predicting. I'd rather facetank environment just watching my cooldowns and hp bar or let the pets do the job in Grim Dawn. Turn based RPGs were a thing back in the day.
Kind of, yeah. They either turn into glorified cookie clickers or brick walls, depending on your build. The gameplay has never really been the attraction for me - it's the numbers and build minutia that tickle my lizard brain.
Check out "No rest for the wicked" by Moon studios, from the creators of Ori and the Blind Forest, it looks like everything I ever wanted from an isometric ARPG
Which is sad, because I like the campaign. I don't care about story, but I like the campaign progression in these games. I couldn't care less about end game stuff and turning my char into a beast or following the new meta of the reddit
@uryshopper except there is nothing to be gained from 'cookie cutter builds' except ruining the fun for yourself. not only you wont get rich due to the way trading system works. then there isn't some sort of arbitrary 'goal' that you need to be 'this good' to gain the best items or the medal of honor that will show everyone how cool you are. the game is about farming stuff and experimenting. sure some builds might be stronger than others. there will be weak builds, tons of strong builds, and some op builds. however, you do not need op builds for anything and they will most likely get patched out sooner or later if they worked through unintended mechanics which is usually the case (definitely was the case prior to 1.0). what do you guys need meta for?
My biggest gripe at the moment is that there just aren't enough Uniques relative to Skill customisation, and the importance and value of Forging Potential is just not well explained. My friend and I have run into the problem of not finding any Uniques that are suitable to us. To be honest, there's too little of them in the game. We looked at sets, too, and found out there are only 17? It makes the 'Full Set Drop' bonus of Rank 4 Circle of Fortune a joke, really. As a result, you can't really build on the way you want to play, you end up having to respec or change things around to suit the gear. It's frustrating. I also find that, although the specificity of the timeline/boss determining which Uniques drop is interesting, it ruins some of the discovery aspect of the game. There isn't enough there to justify hoping something drops that's good for me, and there's a chance I may never see it. Because of that, endgame becomes boring, even though it's addictive. And I've had the game since early access. Reached 73 with a Druid, then 48 with a Sorcerer, and now I'm 72 with a Falconer and 63 with a Necromancer on the most recent cycle, and I just... I don't see the point. It's not even that I don't want to min-max, it's that the gear customisation is hugely lacking in comparison to gear customisation. Perhaps the fact that the game is incomplete is way too obvious because of all this. A lot of abilities feel ignored or unseen in the Uniques and Sets they've made (although I appreciate the Uniques and Sets are for the most part interesting). For example, as my Falconer, I ended up getting Talons of Valor and it's incredible, but like, useful quivers are non-existent. There are 6 Unique quivers. Arrowguard is way too low in stats. Four of them (Troaka's Teeth, Sanguine Hoard, Nightbringer, Phase Point) focus on abilities I don't use (Multishot, Puncture, Hail of Arrows, and Dark Quiver), and while that isn't the be all end all, it feels like I'm wasting an affix because the rest is 'decent'. Zeurial's Hunt looked amazing at first glance and then I realised every other affix said 'Lightning Damage'. Don't get me wrong, I see the potential combinations there for others, but they're not how I want to play.
My favorite ARPGs by a lot. I prefer 2 to 1, unlike most people, but there's not much in it. It's the open world design that makes them better than others, like how you can go inside buildings even though there's rarely a reason to do so. They're more RPG-y. Also, the NPC interactions in Sacred 2 are Oblivion-level hilarious.
subscribed. quick question: wonder if you play the early release version of the game ? I played that one before and refunded it. I wonder if it makes day and night difference now that it is fully release ? I am sucker for ARPG will definitely play this one sooner or later. that being said, Grim Dawn still rocks in 2024 !
I got this game when it was first released on steam in beta I found the game play to be fun enough. My biggest critiques at that time were the lack of visual progression and the camera. I really hoped these two things would be updated for the actual release, but they were not. I understand the need to sell cosmetics but regular gear models are just so bland. The small team put together an excellent game to scratch an ARPG itch with a bit more complexity than Diablo and less overwhelming than path of exile. Excellent review 👍
I think Wolcen deserves to be forgotten. Last Epoch is full fledged, thoroughly designed game. Wolcen basically needed to hire an entire game design team on day one and redesign everything and even to this day it is easily one of the weakest arpgs ever made.
@@fartloudYT I could not disagree more. Everybody memes on Wolcen due to it terrible launch and lack of Dev communication, but Wolcen imo is a great ARPG in its current state and it even does some things better then LE. Wolcen has no MTX and has 10 times better looking gear in the base game. Wolcen Obviously looks much much better then LE, both in overall effects and visuals. The combat feel feels much more impactful in Wolcen then LE even after the 1.0 updates. The endgame system are quite similar and both become rather stale after a while. Now will LE evolve and get much longer support then Wolcen? Sure because they devs actually communicate to the players, but saying Wolcen is the worst ARPG and deserve to be forgotten is kind of a stretch imo. There is no game I hate so much that I want it to not exist because I know my view is not everyones view, but Wolcen dispite its start ended up a fine ARPG to player for a few hundred hours. I actually like Wolcen more then LE, only because nothing about LE sticks out to me. I've tried to get into the game multiple times and nothing pulled me in or grabbed me, yet with Wolcen I did not have that issue. To each their own I say, and another mans trash is another mans treasure.
How has performance been for people on lower end hardware by the way? They changed the recommended GPU to a GTX 3060 around release, so I'm not confident that it would run properly for me.
Compared to PoE hobos here a char looks at least decent in found items. In PoE even endgame char still looks like he jumped into a barrel and put a pan on his head
I knew this game would Have terrible visual progression because it wants you to buy cosmetic MTX…which is why cosmetic MTX are absolutely not okay in games like this.
It's good and addictive, easy to understand and easy to fix some common problems with builds (like resistances) but like you said it lacks polish. I didn't touch the online mode but playing offline while having access to chat is kinda amusing (launch "Online client" then select "play offline". Your chars are separate from online and you have ability to pause, but also have global chat to talk to other people), but have some gameplay issues like projectiles having a hard time hitting enemies in the face or if they are on the elevation/ramps, one-shots out of sudden while other time you are completely fine. Gear depth is complex but at the same time not really, you can pick up random stuff and still be good in the endgame areas. I'd say its a good title for beginners into arpgs, easy to enter but just enough complicated to teach you basics for other titles.
Damn I always skip those "brutally honest" reviews, hate the cliché in the wording ;) but for you and you only I made an exception. Thank you for the quality vid
That Void Knight gameplay makes Last Epoch look immersive, impactful and methodical Too bad my Fire Trap marksman just played at a Path of Exile clear speed and I'd rather boot up another APRG if I wanted gameplay like in the video.
Tried multiple times with this game and I am a die hard ARPG fan. Love d2, titan quest, grim dawn, poe... those are probably my favorites, but this game just felt extremely bland and boring, I always end up giving up 5 hours. Items seem incredibly boring as well as the skills.
Tbh it’s worth playing for me I mean everyone has a diff opinion abt this it’s personal preference. Some find d4 still good some find Poe due to its complexity and so on. I enjoy LE more than any of the other two because it’s in the middle of both Poe and Diablo 2. Esp when they make stats tag in each gear is just awesome for many new players.
im not happy at all that they went the path of exile route where all the iitems you get look like shit so that they can sell you cool looking cosmetics , like wtf poe can get away with its cause its free , last epoch is 30 bucks , fuck that shit ill go play grim dawn , has better looking gear and a transmog system , yes there is only a handful of items you can buy in the store , for now
POE is not free - purchasing extra stash tabs is flatly mandatory if you expect to play it for any length of time. LE gives you plenty of that, a nice change from other games like D4.
@@Skobeloff...As far as know the only cosmetics are the ones from the kickstart, so I don't agree at all with putting Grim Dawn in the same box as these heavy monatised arpgs
Thanks for comparing to Grim Dawn. Only negative of GD is that is so good that I can not play anything else for last 2 years. I think that LastEpoch devs are great but the ge just have so much to cover compared to such a mature he as Grim Dawn. And GD is still very actively developed.
So you made a new character in D4, went to WT2 where nobody plays just to use it as "no players around, dead game"? 90% of the players are in WT4, log in there champ then show it, still plenty of people around. Otherwise, nice review! ;)
I have over 1000 hours in it playin on and off throughout the past few years. I think the build diversity is pretty top knotch... sure some abilities are the "meta" but all in all I see this game only getting better as time goes on
I liked Grim Dawn but I like Last Epoch more because of skill trees. In Grim Dawn I had to use builds from the internet and Last Epoch lets me more easily to try different skills and respect why I want to try different ones. I think Last Epoch is better for me and my friends as we don't have to optimise everything and we can just have fun. Titan Quest and Grim Dawn skill trees were nice but I prefer Last Epoch because the trees for skills are simpler but also more deep in my opinion. Diablo 2 skill trees were nice but you were basically using 1-2 skills and picking all others for passive increases to skills so not the best and Diablo 3 and 4 were just too easy and weak trees while Path of Exile was just too complicated all the time while making respec a pain in the ass. For me Last Epoch is somewhere between Diablo games and Path of Exile and closer to Titan Quest and Grim Dawn but better in my opinion. I find your examples of being one shotted are bad BTW: 4:20 - 20 hp left, 4:45 - you were hit by 2 attacks and 2 hits from a spell, 5:15 - you agro whole army and have only 12 hp, 5:18 - you run into an suicide explosion instead of running away from it, 5:22 - again ahole army and getting hit 10+ times by them etc. I think most of the deaths are your fault by trying to kill an entire army combined with not enough defense and resistances - Last Epoch is about balancing your dps with survivability - you can't deal damage if you are dead ;)
I really like how Last Epoch presents it's skill trees, and it seems like there is very strong build diversity. Like I said, Last Epoch does a great job with presentation, and it doesn't overwhelm the player like most aRPGs. That being said, I still prefer Grim Dawn's progression system, but that's because I have way more hours invested in that game. As for the depth, I don't think Last Epoch has more depth, at least it doesn't seem so. But I would have to learn more about Last Epoch, before I could claim that for sure. Grim Dawn's items seem way more complex in general. As for the one shot examples, you're kinda right. Although most of those are just b rolls that I could easily find in 35+ of video footage. I'm pretty sure I could find better examples where one shots don't make a lot of sense, but the resistances are certainly a factor, no doubt. However, that doesn't justify the poor difficulty curve. For 90% of encounters, it's easy to kill everything on the screen. Then you get that one pack or monster that will one shoot you because your resistance to a specific element is lower. Yet you have many similar npcs which deal exact same damage element, but you don't get one shot. I could have done a better job at explaining that in the review.
@@click4gameplay To tell the truth health + leach life is a great way to also mitigate damage. I think Last Epoch is more deep buildwise - like a single skill can be changed in so many ways. Like a simple Warpath can be just your standard whirlwind from Diablo but it can also be changed to deal only fire damage and to make it automatically cast smite that you can also change to deal fire damage and make enemies that are burning explode to deal even more fire AoE damage and on top of that you can leave trail of fire when you spin to win that will burn enemies even more - or maybe you want your Warpath to summon weapons that will be your minions and attack enemies when you spin to win or maybe you want to spin to win and have block chance while not having a shield and carrying 2h weapon or maybe you want for this skill to cost no mana so you can spin to win without stopping etc. Each skill has many things that will change how it will work and how it will interact with other skills. And then on top of that use item that shoots fire arrows at enemies when you spin etc.
Great review, TY, I am going to go back to GD and wait for this to maybe hit a deep sale. You did a great job in comparing what this game actually offers versus its competitors.
As another diehard Grim Dawn fan, what bothers me the most about this game is the limited number of uniques. The ones available also offer so few possibilities of actually shaping a build. For instance, the majority of them are aimed at minion builds for some reason. Every other one I find offers minion health, minion stun avoidance etc. I picked a bow rogue, and the few uniques I have found for this class are better for nothing. I also don't see much appeal in the whole 'carry over a unique to the forge and make it legendary' mechanic. So far, it doesn't seem to be worth it. It's rather like beating a dead horse. I don't know. Maybe Grim Dawn spoiled me too much, but there is definitely tons of room for making itemization work. The game is otherwise good and solid. I also realize that they need to be cut a slack, considering their scale as a studio. Just my opinions. I hope they can actually and eventually improve this part of the game.
@@ChasodeyI am hoping so mate. Currently I stopped playing because finding items stopped being exciting altogether. I will be on the lookout though. To me, unique/legendary item availability/variety is the biggest problem. I'd love to see it adressed even if it is little by little.
This feels like a game built for end game grinders who want to create insane optimized characters. I am just going to wait for PoE2, as I cannot play more than one ARPG in a year and I played PoE last year.
I would disagree a bit, the game strikes a good balance between absolute beer-drinking of Diablo 3 and 4 and craziness of PoE shtick. Something not too casual but not too institutional and requiring a degree to build builds without external help
Has offline mode, without watching the video ..its absolutely worth playing..not as fun as wolcen thats on another level combat wise but last epoch is well made action rpg.
That's pretty lame that the unique items don't look anything like the in-game model. It's not early 2000's anymore. It's probably intentional to get you to buy the future cosmetics, but I hope they fix it in the future.
Let me say it like this: Without Offline Mode, it would be just another aRPG. Good aRPG, mind, but just another. WITH Offline though(and everything that comes with that) ... instant classic. Enough of "Always Online" nonsense. Let those who WANT to compete / commiserate etc play online while leaving the rest of us alone. And that's just what LE does. With a very good gameplay, plenty of build options, creativity etc. tldr: /chef's kiss
I'm so glad I didn't touch D4 but am sorry for everyone who wanted to love it and was disappointed. Really wanted to play LE but now I think I'll go with Grim Dawn judging by what you and others said!
Amazing how many people deciding similarly on forums. More crowd for Grim Dawn is always nice. I recommend RektbyProtoss and Malagant youtube channels for comprehensive guides and tips
Definitivno mnogo bolji od Wolcena. Gameplay je mnogo smoother, i end game deluje zanimljivo. Mada, ja bih opet rankovo Grim Dawn kao mnogo bolje celokupno aRPG iskustvo.
I have bought Last Epoch long ago - at least it didnt made a nose dive like Umbra -> Wolcen - bitter disappointment. I have played it back then and it was to a certain point enjoyable and have started it again because i want to test Warlock and Falkoneer. Which was a stupid and genius idea to put them out on release. Stupid because you have to wait for them while they could have been done already and genius to get more people back to play - marketing. My general problem with these types of games is the overbearing amount of loot which most of it needs to be filtered out so you dont get annoyed instead of having an option to just suck it in in either an endless inventory or just turn it into cash or better resources. The vaccum cash maker abilites was only available in the Marvel ARPG (Marvel Heroes) which i loved to play. The crafting is annoying you need runes of shattering instead of just deconstruction them as you wish to get the runes for forging stuff with. I never had payed much attention to the crafting but it seems that is has improved. I had found it better when you could have just created your own gear. Farm resources like from dropped loot, craft a basic appearance set up the basic modifier of the armor without having to take a certain appearance, have the option to remove all attributes from every item either for money or better rune of shattering which is needed for unique and purple effects and then fully craft the item you want. The better the basic materials (iron, cloth) the higher the possible crafting success and the amount you can place on it. Gold and potions are only picked up when you are near them while runes need to be picked manually and then needs to be send again via click into your crafting vault. and so on and so on
Voidnight is by far the least interesting class in my opinion (mechanically speaken) And the reason you are getting one shot so often is because resistances are far less important than we are used to. (I had to learn this the hard way, too) enemies get 1%resistant penetration per level. So at tour level max resistance means only 5% damage reduction (still better than negative but getting 50% damage reduction and 0% resistance is still more than 75% resistance) Prioritising armor, block or endurance is much better. Getting high ward per second is a good way, too. Getting 300ward/s is easy to achieve and gives you 2000 extra hp, too.
Some people complained about Diablo 4's open world design, similarly to Grim Dawn. I dislike linear map design. Lost Ark had linear design and I absolutely hated it.
It's funny... I've watched so many reviews and no one mentioned the armor visuals being different from what you see in the inventory. Honestly, this is a letdown for me as well. The last game I've played that was like that was diablo 2 (not the remake). Also, it seems nothing happens when you die, so what's the point of even caring to stay alive?
I agree that the game lacks overall polish. Strange, considering it's been in EA so long. One other comparison with GD; GD has a ton of viable end-game builds while LE seems to have only a few. That makes all that skill customization kind of irrelevant. But, maybe that's a consequence of being a young game. I put 500 hours into LE in EA, and I really have no desire to go back to it. GD, on the other hand, I put 1500 hours into. LE is worth playing, imo, but the depth just isn't there.
I simultaneously want to give this game an 8 out 10 and a 3 out of 10. There is so much good, but it feels so janky. It's hard for me to believe that after 6 years if movement and combat still feel that floaty, unresponsive, and unimpactful will it ever get to a point I would consider passable.
The random off the wall bullshit 1 taps.....something I genuinely abhor in every game.......its not like: "Ok, well I wont do that again", its not a learning experience, its just, your rockin along all good and the game is like......hey, hey you...wanna see something? 1 TAP! As for Grim Dawn, yeah, I tried it for awhile, think I got to like lvl 50, got past some castle, never finished the story....I honestly got lost in all the stats, gear, and different progression windows. Also, didnt find the game terrible fun......I mean, it was aight but eh.....idk...it just didnt keep my interest. PoE, yeah, literally the reason I quit was that god awful confusing mess of a skill tree....then they reset the skill tree constantly...no, im not going back through 45,000 skill nodes to remake my guy... All my experiences with ARPGs over the years has me questioning if I really wanna play Last Epoch. I see it im like...sure? BUt then my brain is like, no no....you might not like it like you think....
As much as i am enjoying Last Epoch, the end game is the worst portion of the whole game in my eyes. There are only 5 variations to the maps which can honestly be boiled down to just 2. (1) go there, kill the thing/survive the thing. (2) Arena, survive number of waves. Thats it. While it can be fun the fight different combinations of enemies, i haven't seen any real challenging varieties. In a final note the last campaign boss fight was nerfed pretty hard in 1.0. The pre 1.0 boss fight was much more interesting and engaging.
Diablo 4 just ain't cutting it anymore (Since a new character or skill tree hasn't been added). Path of exile but takes a while to get to the good shit. POE 2 is around the corner but hopefully lost Epoch gets a ps5 release 1st
My gripe so far is offline mode don't allow you to play with friends despite the code being there and it being a kickstarter promise and mages and archers suffer against bosses in this game because they have to be standing still to attack and bosses have a lot of cycling instant death attacks.
Re: unique gear visuals - the devs have mentioned that they want to add more unique models. It was just a matter of resources and prioritization. PoE for example has also been adding unique models to their unique items.
One thing that is noticed is that the actual design space for further development is somewhat limited. Due to the limitations of hotkeys coupled with balance being so strongly associated with skills interacting with each other, adding new stuff is very difficult to do.
Action role playing games are lacking by default because the gimmick is the first 15 minutes with nothing on top. No story, no characters, no attachment. Shit genre for a reason. It’s like watching math chief and not seeing the chromosomes.
What do you think about Last Epoch? Did you play it yet? 🤔

Im addicted. Exploding zombies and skeletons for ever.
I don't think Diablo-like RPGs really appeal to me. I don't like the classes in this game, especially the names. Like the Diablo games, what really interest me are the enemy designs and models, but we don't get much time with that.
Thanks for the video.
Bro are you from Balkan ?
And With 3 Players Coop 👍
Thats most why i never got Diablo 3 or 4 for PC. I have played D3 in Xbox 360 and its offline mod was perfect.
your offline characters are separated from online though, so you have to make a different one just for offline
Wait....WUT!? OFFLINE PLAY!? Peaked my interest 10000% 😁
@darko1295 Exactly. I want to enjoy the game, not to be constantly stressed out that I fck something up and whole gameplay will be ruined.
Wow those player counts are fantastic!!! Glad this game is doing well, have been playing and following it for years! Hats off to the devteam!!
"Grim Dawn is my personal favourite"
LIKED, SUBSCRIBED AND MUCH MUCH APPRECIATED!
:p
Now that I've actually finished the video now: the endgame is very satisfying and, 30h and 80 levels into the game, I still feel like I'm always making some sort of progress that's not gold, XP or items alone. Last Epoch is honestly a great game that deserves every ARPG fan's attention.
Oh, except the most hardcore of PoE players, those should just stick to PoE. Or at least leave Last Epoch's global chat alone. We get it, PoE is the best! Move along now.
PoE is a great game but god Poe nerds are such babies lol
I guess I'm a fanyboy but no arpg has even come close to grim dawn imo. The atmosphere is just perfect
Grim Dawn is simply goated
The map layout sucks though, I spend more time trying to find which packs aren't blocked than actually killing things
@@ztnep_3670 Sounds like a skill issue
@@Stalker950-l3x yeah cause running down a path for 20 seconds only to find that it'd blocked and you need to take a 30 second detour takes skill
@@ztnep_3670 It was a joke
Torchlight 2 is up there as well.
Good review. However, one of the best features in the game wasn't mentioned: the Loot Filter which, imo, is the best in the genre.
Even if I don’t use loot filters I’m glad people like its existence in such good shape
"Grim Dawn is my personal favorite"
A man of culture, I see.
The undeniable GOAT.
You can adjust the camera zoom a little through the up/down direction pad on your controller or through the mouse wheel. I didn't get into the end game grind but this the most fun i had in an arpg sense Diablo 2.
I play all ARPGs with a controller if it's possible these days, it's just easier to control my character's movement accurately and I don't have to worry about straining my hand pressing down the left mouse button all the time.
wait u can play with a controller? 😱 ive never considered that lmaoo does it work on poe?
@@nikkyyxo Not sure about that, but it works on Titan Quest, Grim Dawn, Diablo 2 remaster, 3, and 4. All of them are nicer to play on a controller IMO.
@@penttikoivuniemi2146 oh nice that seems pretty cool lol
beginnign 5:15 in order - all deaths due to missin resistances 1. poison 2+3 Necrotic 4 fire - necrotic and poison is tricky because they are not "elemental resistances"
also honestly getting hit by the biggest telegraphed explosion kinda asks for getting one shot. Those explody guys can dash out a lot of dmg
Hes also playing VK so a leech based glass cannon type. Its powerful sure, but unless your armor and res's are up to par youll see plenty of gameovers when you misstep
Thanks for the review, you sold it to me, I'll go buy Grim Dawn
considering its price and its age, I think it is a very good choice.
lack or interesting looking items outside of the store killed all my interest in getting this game. it's a tactic to get people to buy cosmetics and D4 is playing it hard right now. instead of enriching the game with stuff that would be exciting to find while playing, all the good stuff is put on the in-game store and the less appealing stuff left in-game so players are left desiring better looking gear. maybe it's just the state of the game at the time of this video, but having icons that misrepresent the items is pretty weird with that monetization tactic going on. game companies are manipulating the minds of players to extract income
Yes just level 12 and just died at that level..So far it’s an absolute blast they did well for sure..
Really good talk and video :D They should listen for sure I definetly agree with the cosmetic when leveling up and unique and really cool looking items so everyone can see
the game is deep very deep server issues can be annoying but eventually it will clear up
A lot of animation vividness and numbers.
4:40 that describes the whole experience for this entire fucking genre...all about the omega late game minimaxing and grindfest
I hope Titan Quest 2 is different.
If you want a big world then play Sacred 1.
I'm actually working on a video about all Sacred games.
Oh, looks like I checked my subscriptions just in time.
Press the subscribed button again and press the all videos button or idk how they call it anymore. Worth for the best channels :)
@@adam-vm3zjI would, but I check my subs several times a day. I never actually miss one of his vids. Thanks for the advice, though

I wonder if it makes day and night difference now that it is fully release ? I am sucker for ARPG will definitely play this one sooner or later. that being said, Grim Dawn still rocks in 2024 !
Good ARPGs are so rare and most developers gave up. More contenders to the big demon gorilla is good.
Cool, gonna check last epoch soonish
I like LE. I dont know why but the early game makes me think of Wolcen a bit.
@@christophersanders7877 wolcen feels so bad, it looks good but that can only get you so far
How has performance been for people on lower end hardware by the way? They changed the recommended GPU to a GTX 3060 around release, so I'm not confident that it would run properly for me.
The only reason you look like homeless in default gear is an online store... Same as in PoE
Compared to PoE hobos here a char looks at least decent in found items. In PoE even endgame char still looks like he jumped into a barrel and put a pan on his head
I knew this game would
Have terrible visual progression because it wants you to buy cosmetic MTX…which is why cosmetic MTX are absolutely not okay in games like this.
11:10 it is the case with mouse and keyboard happens to me as well and sometimes kills me
Damn I always skip those "brutally honest" reviews, hate the cliché in the wording ;) but for you and you only I made an exception. Thank you for the quality vid
That Void Knight gameplay makes Last Epoch look immersive, impactful and methodical
Too bad my Fire Trap marksman just played at a Path of Exile clear speed and I'd rather boot up another APRG if I wanted gameplay like in the video.
The last boss also left me feeling a little incomplete, need to go after orobyos or whatever aphophis mentioned
Grim Dawn sells cosmetics as DLC, it's a worrying trend that fanboys and other dimwits are far too eager to encourage.
PoE gives you every league a decent good looking set when you bother to do a couple of challenges
@@m.h.4907could you form that into a sentence?

Thanks for comparing to Grim Dawn. Only negative of GD is that is so good that I can not play anything else for last 2 years. I think that LastEpoch devs are great but the ge just have so much to cover compared to such a mature he as Grim Dawn. And GD is still very actively developed.
You convinced me I'm downloading Grim Dawn XD
I absolutely agree, people slept on "Grim Dawn", best Diablo style rpg I've ever played.
Really wanna try this but i feel that i should wait till its polished up a bit more.
Great review, TY, I am going to go back to GD and wait for this to maybe hit a deep sale. You did a great job in comparing what this game actually offers versus its competitors.
Not a single word about Circle of Fortune (since you're playing alone)?
Well, we all know that patches can do wonders to ARPGs, even launch version of D2 differs quite a lot from current one
@@ChasodeyI am hoping so mate. Currently I stopped playing because finding items stopped being exciting altogether. I will be on the lookout though. To me, unique/legendary item availability/variety is the biggest problem. I'd love to see it adressed even if it is little by little.
L. E. is in a 3 way tie for my favorite ARPG. D3=Grim Dawn=Last Epoch.
i just need to see enemy and me behind the wall
It looks like you can use “WASD” to move?!
The campaign is not complete. Chapters 10-12 are still in development.
It’s so hard to get used to the pace coming off PoE. But it is a fun game to turn your brain off and just blast with
But, did you enjoy it more than Grim Dawn? I got that game because of you and I still love it!
Your channel
Introduced me ti grimdawn. It is the best one! I have 500 hours in it
Has offline mode, without watching the video ..its absolutely worth playing..not as fun as wolcen thats on another level combat wise but last epoch is well made action rpg.
Fellow GD Enjoyer :)
Waiting for Poe 2 here
Did You try GD Reign of Terror ? Mod with D2 in Gd ?
That's pretty lame that the unique items don't look anything like the in-game model. It's not early 2000's anymore. It's probably intentional to get you to buy the future cosmetics, but I hope they fix it in the future.
I’m dying for steam deck support for this
Let me say it like this: Without Offline Mode, it would be just another aRPG.
Grim Dawn is the goat. Be Careful you might get consumed by the world of cairn the world of Grim Dawn 😉
@@malzagod1429 Thanks for the advice! 😁
Having a great time.
Gold and potions are only picked up when you are near them while runes need to be picked manually and then needs to be send again via click into your crafting vault.
and so on and so on
Voidnight is by far the least interesting class in my opinion (mechanically speaken)
And the reason you are getting one shot so often is because resistances are far less important than we are used to. (I had to learn this the hard way, too) enemies get 1%resistant penetration per level. So at tour level max resistance means only 5% damage reduction (still better than negative but getting 50% damage reduction and 0% resistance is still more than 75% resistance)
Prioritising armor, block or endurance is much better. Getting high ward per second is a good way, too. Getting 300ward/s is easy to achieve and gives you 2000 extra hp, too.
what about crafting?
When will it be on console?
Offline play? Daymmm im hooked
Yo can someone that played the game answer this? Can you zoom out the camera in game?
Some people complained about Diablo 4's open world design, similarly to Grim Dawn. I dislike linear map design. Lost Ark had linear design and I absolutely hated it.
It's funny... I've watched so many reviews and no one mentioned the armor visuals being different from what you see in the inventory. Honestly, this is a letdown for me as well.
The last game I've played that was like that was diablo 2 (not the remake).
Also, it seems nothing happens when you die, so what's the point of even caring to stay alive?
Nothing happens when you die during the campaign, but believe me, you won't want to die during the endgame
is co-op available ?
I agree that the game lacks overall polish. Strange, considering it's been in EA so long.
One other comparison with GD; GD has a ton of viable end-game builds while LE seems to have only a few. That makes all that skill customization kind of irrelevant. But, maybe that's a consequence of being a young game.
I put 500 hours into LE in EA, and I really have no desire to go back to it. GD, on the other hand, I put 1500 hours into. LE is worth playing, imo, but the depth just isn't there.
The few ones they know me they know my obsession with the genre i found this game interesting but also overated
Pretty spot on review.
After playing Grim Down I couldn't bring myself to play Diablo 2 resurrected, environment and everything else was SO much better then D2
I want to play this game but i dont have a pc
My gripe so far is offline mode don't allow you to play with friends despite the code being there and it being a kickstarter promise and mages and archers suffer against bosses in this game because they have to be standing still to attack and bosses have a lot of cycling instant death attacks.
saying I finished is an insane statement
Re: unique gear visuals - the devs have mentioned that they want to add more unique models. It was just a matter of resources and prioritization. PoE for example has also been adding unique models to their unique items.
That's good to hear!
The crafting system is fantastic until you start craft Legendary items.
Get used to frustration
Ha I stopped playing LE after a few hrs because GD spoiled me so bad.
