  • The Renaissance painter, Albrecht Dürer who lived between 1471 - 1528, came up with the idea of putting a window between himself and his subject.
    Vertical and horizontal lines divided the window into equal-sized square blocks which helped him to draw accurate proportions.
    These days it is much easier to use the grid method because we can use photographs or photographic images as references which we simply divide into square blocks of equal size by drawing horizontal and vertical lines on them. We can then draw vertical and horizontal lines on our drawing paper or canvas to create the same number of square equal-sized blocks on our drawing paper or canvas.
    The grid method is one of a few techniques artists use to help us draw realistic proportions.
