2009 Mac Pro - Maxed out ram, GPU, CPU, SSD, can run MacOS 10.14 with Dosdude1's patcher + 1 or 2 Cinema displays(stands included) - Under $998

You don't even need Dosdude1's patcher for a 2009 Mac Pro. All you need to do is do the 4,1 > 5,1 firmware upgrade and use a Metal-supported graphics card and you can run Mojave natively (I own a 2009 MP 4,1 with the 5,1 firmware upgrade with an RX 570)
@@ct1660 True, no real difference between 4.1 and 5.1 apart from the upgraded cpu, the boards are the same.
@@ct1660 Unfortunately you need the patcher for Catalina :(
You can flash the EFI Firmware on it to a 5,1 (2010-2012) and it will run high sierra natively.
I just did this to mine. Works well.

0:08 I like the fact that they start to laugh over a keyboard that cannot be identified.
Especilly since their all mac users. This is a common error when you connect a non apple KB. Macos throws an absolute fit if you don't use Apples terrible kb. ALSO! A Modern desktop mac (macs later than the pro in this video with black screen boot) will REFUSE TO RESPOND to keyboard recovery commands with an aftermarket board! You MUST use an apple KB to gain access to the recovery partition!

I have this exact same model. Changed the gpu, flashed the board to think it’s a 2010 and New cpus with Mojave. Kicks all of the butts.
Same, but it came with an RTX 680 which is still pretty good so I just use it.
My Mac Pro is an early 2008 and runs great

My Plex server is 2009 Mac Pro flashed to 5,1. 32 GB Of RAM, 2X 2.93 GHz with 7970 with 5 drives at the moment. Adding two more drive soon with the total of 7 drives.
I use mine as my main computer. I also flashed mine so I could run Sierra and later. It came with a GTX 680 which supports metal so I was able to install Mojave.
I've been using a 2009 Mac Pro as my primary home Mac for about 6 years. Love it and will never give it up :)

Great video. FYI, the XEONs in this computer use 3 memory channel per CPU. So for best memory performance, install 6 DIMMS (3 per processor) using slots 1,2,3 & 5 6 7.
I have this same Mac Pro early 2009 which I bought brand new in 2009. It also came with dual CPU 2.26. Recently I replaced the Xeons with 6 core per CPU at 2.66. More recently in replaced the old video card with a Saphire RX580 and installed OSX 10.14 on a new 1TB Samsung 860 EVO. Runs awesome for a decade old Mac!

Looks like you got the memory from the same place I got mine from for my 2009. LOL They came in the same exact packaging.
Just got mine going. Dual hex core 3.46 Xeon, 96GB Ram, and Vega 64 card. I'm about to do the pixlas mod on it to fully power the video card as it only has access to 150w instead of the 300 it needs. I will be ordering the cables and hopefully they get here in a reasonable amount of time. This Mac Pro flies though. I am very happy with everything and it feels great to be coding again.
Remember: Always cut towards your buddy, not your body. Because you can always get a new buddy!

@@billyrob612 sure it would. And your HDD was slow even in 2011. SSDs will last forever if you don’t write to them too often. At my current percentages i estimate my boot SSD would last until the mid 2040s under continued use, which ofc isn’t going to happen, I’ll have upgraded multiple times. HDD has no place anymore, you don’t know what you’re missing, not to mention dropping a HDD is a sure fire way to kill it, unlike SSDs, which do not have moving parts.

Oh how apple changed. Now u gotta take the whole ass motherboard out of the case just to upgrade the ram on your Mac mini.
There is quite a difference in the form factor between the Mac Pro and the Mac Mini. The 2009 Mac Mini was even harder to take apart than the current design. But I do agree that Apple is making it harder to upgrade their smaller devices by soldering parts (SSD, RAM, etc) to the board.

You can flash The 1,1 to a 2,1 and Upgrade tue CPUs to Double 3ghz (like i did)
Considering the build quality in these systems everywhere else, it always struck me as strange just how cheap the optical drive housing was.
It can run macOS Mojave natively if you upgrade the firmware from 4,1 to 5,1
The Mac Pro uses 3-channel memory management so you should put in memory by 3 dimms :) So if you put in 2 or 4, then it will be a bit slower than if you put in 3 or 6 in the appropriate slots :)

I have two mac pro and holy sh*t they are loud af when I have the on at the same time and somehow the room gets hot faster that my thermostat
2k9 mac pro is like still a valid system these days.. I run a late 2008 Mac Pro 3,1, dual quad core, rtx2060.. starting to itch for an upgrade only lately (Shadow of TombRadier was slightly CPU bound but still very playable, 45+fps constant only dipping when CPU couldn't keep up otherwise it was solid 60fps)

@@ComputerClan in the past, cheese cutter and mac can were luxury/pro items to me: Pay more than usual, but get decent pro equipment;
now with the "entry level" one I feel completely left out of all considerations :-(

Hey i have the sam mac pro and was wondering if yo could help me with a problem, My mac Pro Turns on then turns off 5 seconds after and then wont turn on at all unless i unplug for 10 mins pplug back in a turn on
Probably an rx 580 and mojave installed using the no compact check set into the nvram and an ssd, and a wifi card upgrade and it's usable as an everyday mac

The legend say that a guy was able to replace Power Supply of a similar machine with a portable Nuclear Reactor that was fueled with rods similar to the one shown in the video. Of course to cool such a power supply he needed an aviation-grade turbine... actually 3 of them(for even airflow). After he got it working, he decided to install Windows alongside the OS X. And he chose Vista, they only Windows he had. He then installed Crisis on it.
No one had seen him ever since.
This is my workstation, but I have 2 2.93 GHz processors (I bought the fastest processors Apple makes). According to Apple, this will take a total of 32G of system RAM. That is untrue. The version of OS X that it shipped with could only see 32G. You can, with a more modern OS X buy 128G of system Ram. For real! I have NEVER had the fans screaming. But yours sounds like a jet engine.
My system has all four drive trays populated. It sill gladly take SSD drives. It has PCIE boot capability. One of your PCIE slots is gobbled by the graphics care. It TOTALLY still runs like a bat out of hell, even with Adobe applications. A great computer.

I have this same machine but I did a few things differently. I have 2 3.33 ghz cpu intel’s, 590 Asus 8 gig graphics, and 48 gig ram. It had a SSD 480 for the os but it died the other day. I had a backup on a 1T regular drive. Will replace with new 1T SSD. Anyway, Mohave was the last OS I could get on the machine. Any clue how to get it any higher?

They been doing upgrades on this machine for 5 years on forums. But the CPUs are too slow now, big bottleneck, won't run Catalina, and if the PSU dies you are screwed.

I'm pretty sure you can still buy Leopard discs at the Apple Store, they list them as available for pickup on the Apple website.. but still charge $19.99 for it lol

Leopard probably didn't boot because the firmware ir however you call it is too new because when you install a mac os update, it upgrades the firmware as well and obviously Leopard can't recognize an El Capitan firmware for example
I hate that apple made it easy as frick to put any os on their computers, but to install their os on another brand of computer you need like 15 steps to patch it
Instead of getting a 2.5 to 3.5 inch adapter for one of the bays I just let my SSD hang in the space below the optical drive, that way i can still have 4 hard drives too :)

Industrial cheese grater
Pretty bad how a $600 (or similar price, don’t really know how much this machine costed exactly) 2009 cheese grater can kick ass just as much as a $12,000 rip off. (and thats 12k at the base of 8 cores, 4x8gb ram, a single 256gb ssd) Seriously embarrassing.
The new Mac Pro starts at 6K, not 12.
