    I bought a 1/3" G. pulchripes, mistaking it for a G. pulchra (i'm new!). At first I was bummed out, but I quickly fell in love with this little sling. I am 51 and only just got into the hobby this year. I had to laugh at your comment about putting tarantulas in your will, because I have warned my children they may inherit several :)

    Nice! Mine is about that size as well. I got it back in January of 2020 as a half inch sling. It did burrow when it was a sling but after it started getting it's adult colors it quit. This is one of the few spiders that I have that don't borrow. It's last enclosure had 5 inches of substrate, a starter burrow, and a hide. It molted twice before I rehoused it into it's current enclosure. Mine has never filled the water dish either. I keep one side of the enclosure moist for the plants. I just overfill the water dish. It will hang around the water dish from time to time and even drink from it. I got the Repti Zoo 16x12x6. About 2/12 inches of substrate. If I notice it wanting to burrow I do have another enclosure ready that has 6 inches of substrate. Love this species! They are so chill. Mine has never kicked hairs. Awesome job Tom! Hope you feel better for the next one.

    Most people don't do this & imo it's a bad way to do videos.

    I always find it amusing when people talk about how docile they are as mine didn't get the memo 😂 Mine thinks he's an OBT! First ever T to throw me a threat pose!
    It's great that you always add the disclaimer that temperament can vary a lot between specimens, and that you demonstrate and explain best practice when rehousing. We use the same techniques and only vary for terrestrial vs arboreal

    Hi Tom! Hope you're feeling better! I'm sick in bed currently and am binge watching your vids so sorry in advance for all the comments you'll have to go through! 6:37 I appreciate how you said that completely deadpan, I would have laughed my butt off just trying to say that sentence hahaha. Your little girl is sooooo cute, I didn't realise how yellow the knees were! I've seen pictures of course but mine is more of a white-gold than that bright yellow at its current size. I do give my G pulchripes a damp corner and I haven't seen her show any preference for or against it, but I keep all my t's at least a little moist. Mine usually goes over and digs in the moist area and then spreads the damp dirt around the enclosure, it's a weird little spider that constantly bulldozes the entire enclosure and rearranges stuff but I've heard that's pretty normal for this species. Awesome video as always!

    Well you answered my question without me asking. Ha. My curly hair has gotten big enough it can reach up and touch the top of the enclosure. She sometimes sits with a leg up touching the lid and when I open it she runs down to the bottom of her hide spins around and waits for me to drop in her dinner. It makes me laugh every time. I thought maybe that could become problematic when feeding/maintenance but you just rehoused with about the same headroom. Thanks and get well.

    She’s so beautiful Tom! I’m sad I can’t get one since I absolutely ran out of space to get anymore. The last time I went out with the express intent to get one my spider dealer didn’t have one, even though he said he’d absolutely recommend it too. I got my Grammostola pulchra instead. Maybe one day in the future I can get one of those beautiful gold banded babies.
    The flu absolutely sucks. I’ve had my flu shot and the booster but kindergartners have some kind of special power of spreading disease and I got the flu too. It’s awful. Take care Mr Moran! I hope you and your lovely family have a blessed holiday.

    Such a gorgeous species 😍 I do keep this t but mine is still only 2.5 inches and spends 90% of her time in her burrow, I hope once she starts feeling more confident I will see her out more atm it's more I know she's alive because her food disappears and the lay out of her viv changes as she makes more tunnels n brings up dirt under the cover of darkness 😆 great sp though can't beat those yellow stripes. Great upload as always Tom . I hope you feel better soon , try n put your feet up I know you hate just sitting but you sound like you need it, maybe get yourself a model to do while you sit so you have something to fidget with, I remember you saying you used to enjoy doing them.

    Got my 8 year old daughter a chaco for her 8th birthday on May 8th of last year. Golden knee for her golden birthday!! A great addition to her first pet, an Arizona hairy scorpion. When we got her (we're hoping it's a her) she was about a dime size. She has melted 5 times in the last year, and us now about 2 inches I'd say. You said in your video to keep the substrate dry. I always thought that moisture helped with the molting process. Am I wrong? I've never owned a tarantula before. So my daughter and I are learning together as we go. Thank you for the great video!!

      What a great birthday present! I LOVE the golden knee and currently have three. They may be my favorite species. This species doesn't like a lot of moisture, so I would usually just give slings a damp corner of substrate and a small water dish. As they put on size (like 2" or more), I keep the dirt dry and give them a water dish. They do just fine like that. I hope that helps!

    I seem to have bad luck in terms of "personalities" of T's that I've gotten. My A. hentzi is just flat out insane and will completely barracade his burrow for maybe a week, then take it all down and be out and about for a while, basically doing very slow laps around his bin.
    My A. chalcodes is/was moderatly high strung when i got her. I believe she is nearing a molt, as she has clamed down quite a bit, has a large bald abdomen, and hasn't taken food for a week plus now.
    My T. alpbopilosum is my most "defensive" T. He does not like to be bothered much at all. he has bopped the paintbrush i use to help him not climb out when feeding before. But, i mean, if some guy took my roof off and was pushing on my butt with a giant paintbrush, i might bop the paintbrush too.

    Good afternoon, Tom and Billie ❤ Thank you, again, for another fantastic video! I'm learning so much from you! Once I think I want a specific spider, I search it out in your list and watch it a few times, taking notes as I go, (you should see how full the notebook is lol) 😅 Then I decide if that particular spider is a good fit for me. I'm so thankful for you! I do have a question, though. I believe your Sling Care videos say that all slings need humidity/moisture, because they lack the waxy coating that older spiders have and thus the need for moisture. Is that correct? I have a Chaco sling, (.25"), coming this week and I want to make sure I make it's home what it needs it to be. Seeing here, that adults need bone dry surroundings, when do Chacos need less moisture... juvenile age? Sub-Adult?

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  7 месяцев назад +1

      Hey, Mara! Thank YOU for watching and for taking the time to comment! So, there are a few species that don't need it particularly moist when they are slings, and the G. pulchripes is one of them. With mine, I would moisten down a corner and leave the rest try. The GBB and G. porteri are two others that follow this same rule. I'm actually posting a video featuring the G. pulchripes later today in which I addres this. If your sling is around .25", you can either keep a corner moist or put a little pinch of sphagnum moss in and use that for a water dish. Just moisten it once a week and let it dry out in between.

    I want this as my first spider pet. I had terrible arachnophobia for over 40 years, just recently over the last few years have calmed down with my phobia. I'm just so paranoid of doing a rehousing, and missing a hair, and it getting on me, and then I wipe my face or something, and I end up going blind lol. I sound dramatic, but that can happen. I was thinking of getting an N. Incei, with no hairs, but they are faster than Superman, and I wouldn't want that roaming my house lol.

      @TomsBigSpiders  9 месяцев назад

      Hey, Phil! This might be my favorite species. If you're concerned about the hairs, use a cup to rehous and gloves on your hands. That will be enough to protect you should it kick (mine never do). In all my years of kicking, I got hairs in my eye once, and that was because I was not being careful. I've kept about 75 new world tarantulas species with urticating hairs, and I've had no issues. Good luck!

    Another great video Tom 👏, one thing about the enclosures, I’ve got 3 sized 16x8x10in there brilliant but I ordered a 20x11x9in but the front and back were rippled causing a blurry effect, ends and top lid were crystal clear, ordered another the same thing, they reimbursed me and said keep the enclosures which was great but setting them up you can’t see the Ts that clearly, just wondered if you or any of your followers had the same problems with the biggest sized ones? Shame really coz there well built, I said could be manufacturing problems but they didn’t get back to me to clarify if it’s been sorted, so I only purchase the sizes below the biggest and clear as day!

I have four of the 10 gallon one, and I've had no issues with that model. I almost hope that I get one now so that I can contact them about it. I don't think that it's a widespread problem, but I will definitely keep my ears open!

    Question regarding water… we have a G. Pulchra with a small water bottle cap for a water dish, in a 16 oz deli cup, with a hide and leaf litter. We fill the water about once a week, but it will trash the place or bury the water dish, then will play “the floor is lava” and will wall walk to keep off of the damp substrate until it dries out. We believe we packed the substrate enough with this rehouse, and it acts “normal” until we fill the little bottle cap, not even full. Normal? Weird T? Or what? 🕷️
