Not sure if you both realize that "Tall man" is actually Mr. Dudley's father. During his recounting of his history he mentions that he was born in Hill House, his mother worked there. She was having an affair with William (tall man). Mr. Dudley talked about how his mother would disappear into the woods barefoot and carry on like a schoolgirl in love. She was running off to be with William. She was also the woman who welcomed Abigail into the "spirit world" when she was killed. Theo's girlfriend in her monologue was talking about how he was riddled with guilt and fear. Guilt over the affair and fathering Mr. Dudley, fear that Poppy would find out.
This is just a theory. I do not believe it has been confirmed in any way. The show itself does not confirm this theory so Mike Flanagan our someone else involved with the show would have to confirm it.
This show accomplishes in 1 season what many fail in multiple seasons. The story of the family is perfectly told, there is no stone left unturned. Every character got their desired ending Great characters, outstanding storytelling, phenomenal acting, killer soundtrack, and bunch of hidden easter eggs. 10/10
Never before has a ghost story touched me like this. I think there’s never been anything like that. It was more drama than horror and that's why it was so great. I hope season 2 can build on that. The actors are partly the same. So the part is sure to be good. I hope the story will be at least as great. Ps: And the family member who, in my opinion, had the hardest life and died saved everyone in the end. Nell has seen her own death all her life, suffered from this disease, watched her husband die, was abandoned by her siblings and despite everything has retained her wonderful character. All confetti. Really took me away.
Whenever you saw Nell manifest to Luke in previous episodes, she was saying "Don't" and "No" just like she says when Luke appears in the pure white Red Room in this episode. After explaining that her timeline is scattered like confetti, it seems that she was sending Luke the message not to give in the entire series.
Luke telling Nell he doesnt know how to live without her and her saying there is no without. That she isnt gone.... That part always breaks my heart. Nells whole speech is so well done and makes me cry so hard. "The rest is confetti" great reaction you two.
Nell, at the end, had me in tears.....joy to anger to sadness....the full range of emotions. Despite everything that happened to her, her only concern was her family.
For anyone who might be interested in reading this admittedly long comment, these are instances of non-linear time, retrocausality and causal loop examples in HOHH I noticed and an overall analysis: (The clock not being able to be repaired is probably symbolic of this also with time being scattered) Nell: “I thought for so long that time was like a line, that our moments were laid out like dominoes, that they fell, one into another and on it went ... a long line between the beginning and the end. But I was wrong ... Our moments fall around us like rain. Or snow. Or confetti.” -the most obvious one, Nell being her own bent neck lady (bent Nell lady) -Liv trying to prevent her children’s trauma and fate but seemingly being the catalyst of it no thanks to Poppy. -“Welcome home Nell” writing on the wall. She sees her Mom writing when she goes back to the house in the future but was accused of writing it in the past. -Young Nell being invisible in the ‘Two storms’ episode and also at her wake where she also can’t be seen... “nobody could see me”. -At Nell’s burial, bent neck lady Nell says to Luke “go... dont”, ghost Olivia says “stay please” ...also seen when Luke is in the red room while overdosing. These are just the ones I could think of, please let me know if I’ve missed any I’d be interested to know! Imo I think the morale of the HOHH is that we need to confront and move passed our past grievances, guilt and trauma to be able to truly move on. Otherwise we become trapped in a cycle that is harmful to us, this cycle is represented in the causal loop of Hill house. We need to forgive ourselves and others to escape/be free of falling into a vicious cycle that becomes very hard to get out of or otherwise face continuously hurting ourselves and those around us. This show really pushed the boundaries of what the horror genre can offer and I am here for it! As always, loved your reactions to this Duo, so glad you enjoyed it! Thank you! And thank you to everyone who also voted for it who obviously appreciates and recognises what a masterpiece it is. Bring on the Haunting of Bly Manor!
"Time is a Flat Circle" -enigmatic quote from Season One of True Detective, another "anthology" type show telling one season-long story each year that blew everybody away with a spectacular first season full of mysticism and focusing on two very broken people crippled by their failure to deal with past trauma. (They then dropped the ball horrendously with Season Two, which is why I'm not allowing myself to get *too* pumped up about Bly Manor)
Brian Gonigal ah yes! You’re very right! I watched this a few years ago, very good show! As a philosophy grad I really appreciate the focus on anything like that. Nihilism, existential dread, eternal reoccurrence. Although, I’ve got to say I’m definitely more optimistic than Nietzsche😅 Dark is another brilliant show that is quite nihilistic, deals with eternalism, causal loops and questions of free will relating to time travel! Keeping my fingers crossed for Bly Manor 🤞
I've never been personally touched by anything purporting to be horror the way this did. There's no better combination of scares and heart than this season.
Hey you should watch the movie "Babadook", it's not as emotional or as much of a masterpiece, but it's really good and the ending kinda plays on the same "concept" as this one (I can't really say more without spoiling)
Omg!!!! Nelly made me cry so much. She was too good for this world. 😭😭😭😭 so much emotions.. Remember Nelly had told Luke before in two separate episodes "Don't Go"... she was warning him.. She saved them all. 😭🥺🥺😭😭😭
FYI-The was an original ending that had them still in the red room. The 2 year anniversary was suppose to have the rectangular window in the background. They changed it because they thought the Crain's should have the happy ending. I agree. The idea of the house winning would have been rough
They took the window out, but everything else is still there, to hint that they're still in the red room (Steve's wife is pregnant, the cake is red, etc). To me they're still there, and this still is my favourite show of all time.
One last Easter Egg: In the book Abigail is one of the daughters of Mr. Crane (who built the house) and she dies in the house, but of old age. I believe her sister hangs herself in the book. After his wife dies he leaves the house and abandons his childer to live in Hill House. An incredible reaction to this episode. The house/Olivia is not happy about the family getting out - Olivia is glaring at Steve when the door closes. At the end there are 7 of them again, the number that keeps you safe. You need to watch/react to a Hidden Ghosts video to see what makes this show so creepy. You should watch/react to the original movie The Haunting - completely different but still considered one of the best "haunted house" movies of all time. Also you can see how many threads were picked up and woven into this series. And then maybe read the original book, it's even better. A second watching of this series will show you just how well it was written/put together. The house does change itself - when Hugh was looking for Olivia and follows her to the dead end hall that hallway does not exist. He runs past the door that shows the spiral staircase but other scenes of the libray show that wall is all windows. And of course the Red Room - another great reveal. Season 2 starts October 9th - can't wait! I assume you will be reacting to that one as well.
The original novel is great and the original movie a near-perfect adaptation of it (didn't see the remake also called The Haunting from I think the early 2000's but it has a terrible reputation, apparently it did everything exactly wrong), so if you're interested in the actual Shirley Jackson story The Haunting Of Hill House read the book or see the first movie, because it has pretty much nothing to do with the story we got here. This is a completely different story that just names its characters after characters from the Shirley Jackson book (plus the author), throws in a line of dialogue or narration here & there that are quotes from the book and has a couple of scenes that play homage to scenes from the original story. Mike Flannigan has made some really good actual adaptations of horror stories, notably by Stephen King, but this really more of an original Flannigan story than it is an adaptaton.
This episode is so powerfully, painfully beautiful in what it has to say about grief and trauma and all the things that some times drive us apart because we can't communicate with each other, and it all comes together in one line to me: "Some things can't be told. You either live them, or you don't, but they cannot be told" If you understand that, and truly accept it, it's much easier to embrace and relate to other people and the things they carry around. "They don't all belong to you"
More and more, tv series gives better sensations than cinema movie. This one is another example. Thanks for the reaction, I watch a lot of your reactions, think it's really time for me to follow. You have to watch "Dark", i'm sure you'll love it.
They have figured out the 10 episode story arc. You world build to episode 4. Then expand the story to a mind blowing episode 9 and wrap up the story with episode 10.
Yeap, they should. It is a masterpiece, mind-bending-blowing show like never seen before. s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/flx-editorial-wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/04150535/Netflix_Original_Series_Showdown-Winner.jpg
That ending really made the show its no wonder that this was praised by Stephen King himself. There is a second season coming soon hope you two will check it out at some point.
I guess the reason this show meant so much to me was because. I lost my mom when I was 8 and my sister when I was 14. It makes someone like me who didn't get to grieve have a second chance to let it all out.
9:45 is a reference to something you omitted at 5:54 when they leave the red room and Steve, his father, and luke pause for a brief second, it's steve noticing his father's body. But they don't say anything. Also, when Steve is speaking to his wife during the ending he says "I just want to fix this" which is a parallel to what his father used to say all the time in "I can fix this". Such a beautiful show despite what most would assume going into it

I wanted everyone to die in the red room. ☠️ For comparison’s sake you may want to watch the original adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s book (the book is great too). It’s called “The Haunting” and came out in 1963. It’s a great film. Don’t bother with the 1999 remake though, it’s trash. 😄
That was my original reaction too, and how I felt all through watching previous reaction/recap videos. This time though, the clips they showed and the reactions they had to this last ep, I don't know, it just really worked for me this time, watching it through their eyes. I still wish the speechifying & narration at the very end wasn't so over-the-top sappy, but I no longer feel like the ending had to be completely nihilistic.
@@JosieSchuller well if you want a bleaker ending there's a theory that they never escaped. Because at the end scene with Luke's 2 year cake is bright red, the exact same colour as the red room door. I'm probably explaining it bad but essentially the theory is that they are all still stuck in the red room being consumed
