I'm part Finnish and I remember my Great grandmother who was from Finland was a more serious, stoic lady, not much in the way of frivolity or silliness but there was a communication gap also. Other variation is "Saunan takana on aina tilaa" = "There's always room behind the sauna". People usually don't mean it seriously, but it means that someone is completely worthless and should be just put out of their misery. It originates from the time when saunas were built a bit further away from other buildings (because of fire hazard) and when you butchered animals for food, it was done behind the sauna, out of sight because it wasn't pleasant to look at. Then you continued to process the meat in the sauna, because there was water readily available. This has taken the form of a death threat (usually about someone not in the room, and not 100% serious threat, just expression of frustration about some person who is a complete f*ckup or major pain in the ***)
I love northern Finland. Breathtaking natural beauty. Helsinki is a fine city but for such a safe country take care in and around the central train station. I’m a big scary looking (I’ve been told) dude but still gangs of young men were eyeing me off. The locals said tourists and locals risk getting mugged by these gangs.

I'd say the risk is almost negligible, even at the Helsinki Central Railway Station. I mean, thanks to my struggle with alcoholism and the connections to the drug world coming from it, I know these dudes to a large part. Seriously, they *very* rarely mug someone outside of their own circuit. It's not a Thing around here. They might eye you for what you are, i.e. are you a part of the circuit, but they won't approach you when they deem you a "civilian". In here, we have workable deterrence. Not for every category of crime, but for a tourist facing outright violence, yes. Nobody in their right mind would go there, and even those in their wrong mind would most probabably be swiftly caught and dealt with accordingly. While the Finnish police and our justice system grantedly are rather laid back, liberal and "Nordic", in the end they do *not* fuck around. They are the guardians of justified violence, and the only ones around here, with guns; and the investigative machinery which just doesn't stop, basically ever; also the relative ability to keep investigating any case they want and have to till eternity, since the violent crime rate is so low and they can prioritise by will.

Fins are emotionally closed, natural, private, in theur own world (except when they drink). The happiness is about social and country measures, how well everything is taken care of. They have top education, health and child care, economy, living conditions, peaceful surroundings, no immigration or crime problems. That says nothing about the high unhappiness due to the weather, dark days, and high suicide numbers because of drunkenness or loneliness.
No place is perfect. It is sad that many Finns are so lonely and isolated. It is sad to mostly communicate when working; and be social mostly when drinking.

I had a Finnish girlfriend & she was the most depressed person I have ever met. She wasn’t very social so at parties or gatherings she just stood there. She drank a 5th of vodka with sprite everyday. She even told me that everyone she knows in Finland is depressed & that’s why she came to NYC. 😆 we lasted about 5 months. She broke up with me cause I don’t drink enough. 😂😂😂😂

We often get bored with strangers outside our personal perimeter.

Finland is gorgeous. However, it is very cold and dark for much of the year. Outdoor sports like skiing, ice skating, sledding, hiking, biking are popular. Many Finns are athletic and fit.
Great video! Some of it is news to me and I bet to many other Finns too. I didn’t know that ”Suomi” (Finland) or ”suomi” (Finnish language) is a word that’s origin nobody knows for sure. In fact I was sure that’s not true and googled it to prove you wrong but actually it seems to be true.
I dont know any sources that supports this, but i could imagine that Finland was called Suomi by the natives due to the swampy/lakey nature of the land. Suomi could be an old version of Finnish that could mean Suomaa, which translates to Swamp land. In the same sort of fashion the Swedes dubbed it Fin-land (Fine Land or Nice Land in Swedish) due to the nice potential farm lands in the south west where they landed on their 'crusade' to expand Swedish territory in the middle ages.

Sure, the overall crime is low and street crime is very rare (although on the rise lately), but in certain segments of the Finnish society (substance abusers) homicide rate is a serious issue, 3) Europe´s 3rd highest illegal substances consumption per capita, 4) Europe´s highest per capita death from illegal substances abuse in under 25 year olds, 5) With harsh climate and seasonal disorder affecting all of Finland´s population, it comes as no surprise that a significantly high proportion of the population consumes large quantities of anti-depressants, 6) One of the world´s highest infant and child murder rates, with news of parents torturing and killing their own babies constantly rocking the nation, 7) Even the best part of Finland´s progress, the education system, is showing clear signs of decline due to laziness, apathy, social media addiction in pupils and students as well as worsening standards of parenting. Finland has been sliding in PISA ranking for several consecutive years now. 8) The small- and medium-sized businesses are being suffocated by the taxation. The government policies favour either large businesses or not working at all and receiving social benefits, instead of encouraging small entrepreneurs. The list goes on....
The same thing is happening in America. There are long waits even for some serious conditions that require monitoring. Many nurses left during the pandemic because they opposed the mandates. It is also greedy, profit minded interests. And also too many people and newly arrived immigrants demanding services. Immigrants are often first in line. Health care systems are overwhelmed.

For example the scene showing the Olimpia Hotel is from Tallinn not Finland and there are others. Also you should know that Finland is not the first European country to grant women the right to vote. If you go to Finland, go to Saimaa (if russians havent bought all the publicly avaivable beaches and islands), it's simply the most beautiful lake I've ever been to. Or just go north (if you like snow and cold) ...But it is pretty there. About Finnish weather; summertime is 20c - 30c (max) and winter is ...cold (southern Fin). But if I wasn't from Fin, i'd visit here at spring or fall, just because of the nature and it's beauty. *BTW Suomi prolly refers to the fact, that most of the land is pretty much swamp or atleast very wet.. I've never heard of any of these beliefs. There's no space for superstitious in Finland, because we don't actually believe in some fairytales. Long time retirees might be different.
I hung out with some Fins when I lived in Europe. They were gold folks however they are NOT what I would call happy. I have been around the world and I have seen much happier people in warmer climates not somewhere near the artic. Filipinos, Thai's and Colombians all seemed generally happier than Fins. Most the time I see these articles and realize its just to push the Nordic model which COVID has proven doesnt work.
I'd move to Finland if I could.... But I wouldn't call then "HAPPY" . most come across as stone cold... They would probably have a fit if they came to a Aussies party from all the jokes and laughing..

Great video! Some of it is news to me and I bet to many other Finns too. I didn’t know that ”Suomi” (Finland) or ”suomi” (Finnish language) is a word that’s origin nobody knows for sure. In fact I was sure that’s not true and googled it to prove you wrong but actually it seems to be true.
I dont know any sources that supports this, but i could imagine that Finland was called Suomi by the natives due to the swampy/lakey nature of the land. Suomi could be an old version of Finnish that could mean Suomaa, which translates to Swamp land. In the same sort of fashion the Swedes dubbed it Fin-land (Fine Land or Nice Land in Swedish) due to the nice potential farm lands in the south west where they landed on their 'crusade' to expand Swedish territory in the middle ages.

How about the ugly side of Finland?

5) With harsh climate and seasonal disorder affecting all of Finland´s population, it comes as no surprise that a significantly high proportion of the population consumes large quantities of anti-depressants,
6) One of the world´s highest infant and child murder rates, with news of parents torturing and killing their own babies constantly rocking the nation,
7) Even the best part of Finland´s progress, the education system, is showing clear signs of decline due to laziness, apathy, social media addiction in pupils and students as well as worsening standards of parenting. Finland has been sliding in PISA ranking for several consecutive years now.
8) The small- and medium-sized businesses are being suffocated by the taxation. The government policies favour either large businesses or not working at all and receiving social benefits, instead of encouraging small entrepreneurs.
The list goes on....
The same thing is happening in America. There are long waits even for some serious conditions that require monitoring. Many nurses left during the pandemic because they opposed the mandates. It is also greedy, profit minded interests. And also too many people and newly arrived immigrants demanding services. Immigrants are often first in line. Health care systems are overwhelmed.
While I was in visiting Norway & Sweden I thought about Finland & Iceland to visit unfortunately my time was inconvenience . After I never make it . I know girl from Finland not in person met her You tube vlog I always say that to her your heritage is in Bombay my heritage is Finland .

14:06... pretty sure that's fahrenheit. 110 degrees C is 230 degrees fahrenheit. Hottest recorded temp on earth is 134 fahrenheit. At 230F, you'd literally cook as you'd be at a point above when your blood would boil.
Sauna competition indeed had temperatures of 230 degrees F or 110 degrees C, the worlds hottest temp recorded on earth would indeed feel like nothing inside of sauna.

The typical finn has a melankoli personality but the finns are happy becouse the government has built the nation with a big heart for the finnish people so that is the reason. The Swedish goverment does not care as much about the Swedish people. I am swedish.

Thank you for a wonderful video but may I ask why you show so many scenes from Estonia and the Estonian capital, Tallinn? For example the scene showing the Olimpia Hotel is from Tallinn not Finland and there are others. Also you should know that Finland is not the first European country to grant women the right to vote. The tiny European country of The Isle of Mann, which sits in the Irish sea between Britain and Ireland, gave women the right to vote in 1881.

If you go to Finland, go to Saimaa (if russians havent bought all the publicly avaivable beaches and islands), it's simply the most beautiful lake I've ever been to. Or just go north (if you like snow and cold) ...But it is pretty there. About Finnish weather; summertime is 20c - 30c (max) and winter is ...cold (southern Fin). But if I wasn't from Fin, i'd visit here at spring or fall, just because of the nature and it's beauty. *BTW Suomi prolly refers to the fact, that most of the land is pretty much swamp or atleast very wet.. "Land of a thousand lakes" -- (Suomi = Swampy) :D

I hung out with some Fins when I lived in Europe. They were gold folks however they are NOT what I would call happy. I have been around the world and I have seen much happier people in warmer climates not somewhere near the artic. Filipinos, Thai's and Colombians all seemed generally happier than Fins. Most the time I see these articles and realize its just to push the Nordic model which COVID has proven doesnt work.
You don't need to smile 24/7 and you can be happy. In Asia I saw so many fake smiles.
