Quite possibly, the most underrated and under appreciated ballplayer in the history of the game. He played in the Midwest during the era of Mays, Mantle and Aaron and probably never received his just due. This guy was an absolute stud . . tough minded and fearless . . and his career statistics rate right up there with the best of the best. He was the childhood hero of tens of thousands of Red's fans . . including me.

How many outfielders did they pick ?
The best 5 outfielders of all time are Ruth, Mays, Aaron, Cobb, tie between (Robinson, Musical, Clemente, Speaker, and a couple of others).
Lol, it's all subjective.......but there's no way on earth that Pete Rose is a better baseball player than Clemente.....Higher average, more homeruns, more gold gloves.

I saw Frank homer at Memorial Stadium in 1966 when he won the Triple Crown. Such electricity in the park when he stepped to the plate. He was a one-man wrecking crew that year, easily the most valuable player on a World Championship team.

I saw Robinson in 1972 get thrown out stretching a Double into a Triple and arguing with the ump, cannot remember if he'd been thrown out of the game but really got into the umps face, LOL...What a competitor..He killed my Red Sox every time the Orioles played them it seemed...That time period, between 1966-72', the Orioles may have been one of THE great teams of all time, they were just that good....And Robinson made the difference...

I think Frank Robinson might be the most underrated ballplayer in history. As tough as they came, he was hard as nails on the field. As complete a player as there's ever been, including Willie Mays. The heart of those great Oriole teams along with Brooks.
Pete Rose got himself in trouble in Cincinnati for associating with black players, mainly Frank. To his credit, he didn't care and continued to go out to dinner and hang with his guys anyway. I've always respected Pete for that.

Ryan Sullivan The fact that he was never asked to be a general manager or president of player personnel in the majors, the fact that he managed into his 70s and won, the fact that he was one of the anchors of the Orioles AND the Reds...underrated is an understatement. He should be a lot more visible both in the black and white communities in terms of what he's done...and just like Jackie Robinson, in a way, he's been relegated to only one sector of adoration and respect. Frank put them over the top in 1966 and the rest is history as they went 3 more times while he was on the team. it was fitting that Cleveland made him the first black manager since they were the team that broke the color barrier in the American League with the signing of the great Larry Doby. I've read about the 1971 Oriole tour of Japan. THE CHRYSANTHEMUM AND THE BAT by Robert Whiting.
The Japanese were angry they couldn't play the Pirates, "Why did we have to play the #2 USA team?"
Suffice to say, the Japanese grossly underestimated a team that could have won 3 straight World Series Championships.
Cuellar's screwball was un hittable. I think the final series tally was 14-2? for the Orioles vs. Japan All-Stars and the Tokyo Giants, in the middle of 9 straight JL Championships.
The Orioles dynasty of 1966-1971 maybe played their best baseball in November 1971 in Japan.
