  • This is Disco, our eight-month old parakeet. We've had him for three months, and he seems to love learning new things to say and new sounds to make. (This is poor video quality; it was a quick and fun job meant for family and friends - we never thought people would enjoy him so much.) Disco has his own Facebook page - Disco the Parakeet - and he's on Twitter @DiscoParakeet

    When disco was a baby , Disco must have had a smaller cage. As he grew and became famous, he got a more palatial estate deserving of a star. I never knew the answer and can now end my sleepless nights , because Disco revealed that "a Parakeets cage is bigger on the inside." What a Joy. Love and XXXXX.

      I think they typically start mimicking their parents at about four months, so his starting to mimic us at five months and being able to mimic this well at (what was he... hmmm....) seven months, eight months probably wouldn't be too rare IF more parakeets were raised in truly humane and gentle conditions. (And if more people didn't treat them as cheap, throw-away pets not deserving of attention.)

    Hm, hard to answer - I talk to Disco all day long, off and on, and so my husband and daughter when they are home from work/school. I don't have a set schedule, but he definitely learns from our working with him on specific phrases, and then, yes, just by interacting with and listening to us he has picked up other phrases!

  • @Discotheparakeet
    @Discotheparakeet  11 лет назад +3

    We talk to him a lot! We brought Disco home at four months of age, and we started talking to him right away - and all the time. Two big things for Disco are that 1) he was hand-raised, so he was very relaxed and tame when we got him and 2) I am a stay-at-home parent, so it's easy for me to make time to play with him and talk to him throughout the day, plus then he has my husband and our daughter talking to him all the time.

    Thank you so very much! This was his first one ever, and we've continued to enjoy making videos of him. His speech has gotten even clearer, and he has learned some pretty long phrases/songs. He makes us laugh a lot, and we're glad he does the same for other folks! :)

  • @Discotheparakeet
    @Discotheparakeet  12 лет назад

    I know, so many people have never heard a parakeet talk, didn't know they could take, etc. They are actually in the top three of the bird world as far as talkers go, despite their tiny size. Now, if we did not spend so much time with Disco, and if he had other birds with him, he probably would not talk, either much or at all. He considers us part of his flock and, therefore, he wants "in" on our noise!

  • @Discotheparakeet

    The window is not drafty at all - we live in western New York (think major winters!) and if our windows were drafty we'd freeze (or go broke from trying to heat our house - not sure which would occur first!). We brought Disco home when he was four months old (and he had been hand-raised), and he started talking three weeks later. He doesn't mimic the TV or radio at all, just us, but he does like background music and talking, it doesn't matter if it's "live" or from an electronic source!

  • @Discotheparakeet

    Well, who knows? Some people think he's fake, some people have said it's not "fair" because a $20 bird talks better than their $2,000 parrot, etc. I don't worry about it - we're having fun, Disco is happy and healthy, and other people get a great deal of enjoyment from his antics, so a few "dislikes" are pretty irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.

    Currently they are (well, were clipped - they've grown out quite a bit). He can fly no matter how well they are clipped (and it's done by his vet, as I have no idea how to do it, and it's not something one wants to do incorrectly), but it does help control how far he can go and how quickly, which was important a few months ago when he was being treated for an illness.

    What a treasure! We left Disco where we purchased him (independent, birds-only shop) for a week when he was just one (and talking up a storm), and he ran his beak in the car on the way home from picking him up. I wouldn't worry about it one bit, honestly, especially since he'll have a stimulating time there and he'll be with people who really know how to take care of him. As for his being the only bird, yes, I agree, if you have ONE bird, it's a much higher success rate. :).

    Oh, absolutely, - not all of them will talk, no matter how much time someone spends with it, trying to teach it to do so. Then there are birds who manage to pick up a lot even if people don't spend much time with it. We never thought Disco would talk, and if he learned a little, we thought we'd be lucky to get a few words out of him.

    It’s not just that Disco is the cutest, funniest parakeet on the planet (even our parakeet, Ichiban, agrees--he watches and sings to Disco’s vidoes all the time and if we don’t play one for a while he flies onto our laptop and glares at us until we do). It’a also the obvious niceness (is that a word?) of, and love shown him by, his owners, as evidenced by your captions and voice-overs, that makes it such fun to watch the clips.

    I always tell people not to get birds just because you want them to talk, because it's unlikely they will talk like Disco (they may talk, but he is exceptional). With two or more birds, it becomes even more unlikely. However, they're wonderful pets if you provide them with a ton of love and attention, not to mention, of course, quality food, fresh water, fun toys, etc.

  • @Discotheparakeet

    He really is; we want him to stay that way, too. The idea of him ever being unhappy is an awful one, so we are happy to be his entertainment on a regular basis. We attended a wedding this past weekend, and we hired our daughter's babysitter to not just come over and let out Freddie, our mini schnauzer, a few times (and play with him and rub the royal belly), but she also had to give Lulu hay and grape tomatoes (her faves), and she had to entertain The Disco. Hey, we were gone six or seven hours!

    It's a King's Cage - they are based in NJ, and you can find them online, although I bought mine locally - and they have many kinds in many price ranges. They're easy to keep clean (we have had more than one of their cages for Disco, so I know), easy to work with, and both of ours have been on stands which roll, which makes it fun, since we can take him from room to room. I can also store his goodies on the stand.

    He was 8 months when we filmed that video, and he just turned 2 this past weekend! You can see more recent video if you click on my Channel. Disco also says "What R doing" and just like that, because our daughter, when she was a toddler, asked it like that. But he also asks "What are you doing" in a very excited voice. They are a lot of fun, and I bet you do miss having them - they're such happy little things!

    Yes, yes, and yes! He mimics sound - so, sound of voice, emphasis used, intake of breath (which is mostly from me - odd form of asthma), lip-smacking to make consonant sounds. He sounds like himself, but also my husband and me depending on which one of us taught him the phrase more (and possibly which one of us said it in a way he prefered). He mimics ours daughter in one phrase, "Come on, Disco!" She is much quieter when she plays with him.

    Well, we sleep upstairs away from him, but with the exception of some light chatter as we're turning out lights and going upstairs, I have always been fairly certain he doesn't talk at night once it's dark. I now am much more certain of this, as we slept with him in our hotel room in NYC in May, and once we had the lights out and were settled, we did not hear a peep out of him all night (and I was awake most of the night, so I would have heard!). Sukkubine, I hear you - it is sad when people get a pet of any kind and then don't live up to the responsibility, and a huge part of that responsibility is being a companion to that pet, loving it, caring for it, making sure it has plenty of things to do that IT likes to do. We debated long and hard about a second pet (we have a cat), and one that requires so much interaction. However, I am home (stay-at-home parent), we have a very animated 8-year old, and my husband dotes on Disco, too!

    That is one of the cons about boarding, even the gentleman who owns the shop we uses says so (that and they are out of their comfy environment). Some birds need more consistency - actually, most birds do. We have always been warned about a new cage for Disco or boarding Disco, that he won't talk for days, and he is just very flexible and it's never been the case, but he's unusual in his flexibility and mild manners.

    Well, I can't, but you might be able to! :) Having more than one bird makes it harder, because they would rather speak "parakeet" with each other than learn to mimic you. (With just have one, it treats you like a member of his or her flock, so it will mimic you more readily.) But don't let that stop you from trying - repeat their names to them often, in a friendly, excited voice, especially while you're playing with them. If they don't learn their names, it's still a nice time for all of you.

  • @Discotheparakeet

    Disco does all of those things, too - it's OK if they don't talk, really. We never expected this, and if he stopped talking tomorrow, we'd be OK with that. Play with your budgie as often as possible, and talk to him (or her?) as much as possible - maybe (s)he will surprise you, but if "nothing" else (I hate to call it nothing), you and your bird will have fun.

    @Sukkubine Birds are skittish prey animals in the wild, so they don't usually "try to make friends". In captivity, once you earn their trust, they view their human companions as equals and members of their "flock". Unhappy and distrusting birds don't act cute. They scream, bite and pluck their feathers. Birds can be happy in captivity as long as they are fed a healthy diet, well groomed, and well loved. :) This video is actually really happy because it shows the bird is treated well.

    How old is your bird? What and how have you tried teaching him or her already? Start with one simple word or phrase (its name, or "pretty bird" or something else short and sweet) and say it to your bird clearly and with a lot of animation and excitement. Do this a few times a day for even just a minute or two. Make sure you do it in an excited way - your bird will enjoy the sound and the feeling. Start there, be patient, and let us know!
