- Hens and Roosters make all sorts of animal noises. Animal sounds that you have to hear to believe! My funny Chicken screams will make you amazed and laugh. Here is a sampling of screaming chickens, a few of their calls and sounds on the farm in the barn yard coop while trying to lay their eggs.

With the greatest sadness, I need to report that our roo Jethro (featured in this video) has passed. He was treated with respect and kindness all his born days. He had it good with the girls. There was no sign of illness, he was ailing one evening and passed the next morning. The girls have been fine so it was not anything contagious. He was always a little delicate, catching colds when no one else did. Possibly because of his size, his little heart just finally gave out. Oh I miss Jethro, it is so quiet, I can't stand it.
If u know he lived a beautiful life and u helped him. Be happy now his peeking on a beautiful site... Remember animals are so pure and good bless them.
So sorry about Jethro. He had a wonderful life I lnow.. When my pet rooster (Roosie) died it broke my heart. When we let him inside my parakeet rode around on his back.

I love listening to my chickens, I bought a baby monitor just so I could see and hear them
I too have a baby monitor inside 1/2 of a cooler under our 2nd story back screened in porch. I got it to alert me inside (in the winter I can't hear them w the house all closed up) if a hawk is in the area. Chickens do make sounds to alert danger. I go running out if i hear anything strange! Also fun to just hear them inside :)

Our Roo will join in when our girls sing the egg song and I remind him that he is not a chicken lol. The girls can get loud and proud though when they lay an egg. I would too.
It doesn't matter if you have 10 nest boxes either, they will still fight over the same one.

lmao i know this is old but this is EXACTLY how our chickens are. 10 hens, 10 boxes, they all take turns in the same box.
That's why I have only one nest box. It can acommodate three hens. But they still tend to queue up even before that one.
Sometimes a fake egg in the less favored boxes can help... Sometimes lol

The hens are all doing the Egg Song, it's not a conflict. The Roo joined in too. It's a ritual relating to laying.
When we first got our chickens we got 6 of them. We got them as chicks from a Tractor Supply store and took them home. As they grew, we found out that 2 of them were actually roosters, and because we live in a suburban neighborhood, we were forced to get rid of the roosters due to the rules of the neighborhood association. I hated to get rid of those 2 roosters not only because we loved them as our pets, but also because they were such great protectors of the hens from hawks. Yes, the roosters cock-a-doodle-doo'ed often, but if you ask me, the dogs in our neighborhood that constantly bark are far louder than our roosters ever were.
I think that's why no one has complained about our roo --- how could they with their barking dogs! We do have an ordinance here but hard to enforce and it never stops it anyway.
Used to have a neighbor that had a rooster and chickens. I always loved hearing him crow. It's a unique sound in the suburbs. I think that the government in general would prefer us dependent on the local grocery stores for economic reasons. I believe that's a big part of why there are such laws.
Yes, dogs are much worse! At least chickens go to bed at sunset - my neighbors dogs would bark all weekend night and day as he would leave them in a pen all weekend. Complaining only makes pissed neighbors. Horrible situation.
I too always have loved that sound but my neighbors are very tolerant of my crazy GIRLS! ! I do live in the county which helps!
Lol you are saying dogs make more noise then roosters. My neighbor's kid's scream like banshees on the trampoline. And I would put money on they would be the first ones that complain if I had a rooster
I love how Jethro started scratching and making the treat sound to try and lure the girls so they would shut up. LOL. Mine did that too when the girls quarreled.

Love the chickens. I use to help my neighbor with hers. As we approached the coops they always sounded like they were singing. Never forget those sweet sounds
When I put mine to bed at night, as they enter the run they make low tone noises, sort of like horns, completely different than the rest of the day.

Crazycatlady I hate/love roosters because sometimes they just go off and try to kill you and their bite hurts but when I'm holding it he calms down

I love the sound of roosters, luckily I live in rural area. This was fun to watch and to know that others enjoy the weird noises chickens make.
My personal belief is that the rooster ban in cities due to noise is ridiculous and idiotic. I live in Seattle and believe me with a the construction and traffic noise, a rooster would be a welcome change to the cacophony of man made noise...

I was chasing around a chick and she ran inside her coop. When she came out, she switched her voice from tiny peeps to goose honking so quickly. She didn't even have the same voice pattern! So weird, all of puberty in 10 seconds.
Funny how that happens! I love it when they are in the juvie stage and finding new things to get into!

I have one hen, that always finds a way out of the cage. She goes in the middle of the neighborhood, really early in the morning, and begin screaming. I just woke up by her, and it’s 5:30 in the morning.
My little chicken thinks it's there is chickens in the room but it's only him and the baby and the mom😂

Lol, I use to live in a town that allowed all kinds of animals in the neighborhoods. The funniest memory was when I was pregnant, big as a house, couldn't sleep cuz these Bantam Roosters kept getting out and going up to my bedroom window. One morning I had had enough, lol. I went running after those roosters, in my bathrobe,. down the street, lol. I didn't wanna hurt them, just get them away from my window. My neighbor didn't know Bantams are the one kind of chicken that can fly.

My chickens do the ruckus in the hen house every single morning at least three times. Except they all do it. 3 chickens cluck while 1 does that screaming type thing that goes aghhhhhhgghhhh

Reminds me of my friend. One wife and 6 daughters. Ages 12 to 24 all living at home. His second oldest has a 2-year-old son. (Her husband/boy's father killed by DRUNK DRIVER.) My friend is always being peacemaker especially during the magical time of month.

Yeah, can be the case! Roo's get a bad rap when it's the hens causing all the trouble. The sound of a roo is much more pleasant to me than squabbling hens! At least u can keep your hens regardless of their voices.

This was cute! I'm new to chickens since last year. The hens are all grown and laying now.They seem very happy and get lots of attention from my husband and I. I can't have a rooster because I live on the outskirts of the city, but not really rural. It's just the law here. My "ladies" make all kinds of fun noises. Only one hen is really noisy while laying. I checked her over really well and she's fine. The others don't do this. They all make a cooing, purring kinds of sounds when they see me! I love it! Sometimes they skwak over disagreements and they're really a lot of fun!
So happy you are treating your girls WELL! Better to not have a roo -- they really do wear out the girls but at least my Jethro is a nice roo and he may be able to fend off the hawks a little. My biggest worry are predators. The gang is locked up at night with a 2 door system and fenced in -- so far so good 7 years running. Chickens are FUN.

Roosters will sometimes do this to get hens to come out of an area the rooster cannot fit into, if the hens have scattered too far while free ranging, or if the roo is just looking for "romance" and wants a hen to come closer. They aren't stupid, they know what they are doing. We humans just aren't paying attention!

I made one 5 ft wide nest box filled with clean straw .My 6 hens still fight over the same spot even though 2 or 3 hens can lay in it at the same time.I get 3 eggs a day.Whats the problem?LOl

I have 1 hen that screams so loud, I have yet to find another one on RUclips that does this. It sounds more like a peacock or monkey. Very strange.

Yes. It's just Jethro and 2 hens. Jethro is just featured in his video. And his crow is just so nice. He is off to have ladies.
At 1:52 when the rooster is making that softer, happier sound and pecking at the ground, he's trying to tell the hens that he found something nice to eat. I grew up with chickens and every time one of our roosters would make this noise, all the girls nearby would rush over and the rooster would be saving something to give to them and show them where it was on the ground so they could eat it. It was very sweet to watch :)
