I wrote down every part number you mentioned... Followed your directions with mentioned doo-hickies. Went to Honda dealer with list of parts, bought said parts and assembled. Now I have a bass boat. Thanks Dave!
Thanks for sharing this ... Great message here and good job on the 500..... I miss the eighties and the 2strokes... Now I have a xr650 dual... Cannot access the dirt with the 2cycles round here in NJ with out causing alarm and police attention... I still want a cr500. 1987 that is.
Good video, I ride a 1986 CR500R that's been completely rebuilt with 39mm D-slide carb, ignition advance kit, carbon fiber reeds, Radvalve, A Weisco. 040 kit, new cylinder cut .020 , head cut .040, Dynaport front pipe, all new suspension, Renthal Bars and most importantly, STONE KING rear tire and 14 tooth front sprocket on C-14 fuel.
Next time I pull apart a bottom end I should video it. :) It's pretty straight-forward. One thing we've done in the past is to put the main bearings in the freezer right before you're ready to put them in the case half and on the crank. You heat up the case with a torch and then take the cold bearings out of the freezer and they drop pretty much right into place. Make sure everything is put back together exactly the way it came apart and put in all new bearings, gaskets, etc and torque to the correct specs and you should do great! I used to race an 87' CR500 and love it! It was one of the best years for the CR500! I loved the power delivery, gold rims, etc. :).
Dave Hook I've done that but I've found it easier to just press them in. I've got like 7 or so bottom end videos up, done the bearings every which way except nitrogen method.
I bet thing that thing is an absolute beast, biggest bike I have ever owned was a Kx-250, and that was more than enough bike for me. Good lesson as well, never rebuilt a bike but it was a good look of how to do it.
Fantastic video! Had a cr500 Imported from the USA to England it's a 2000 Model always wanted one great bike thanks for putting a great video on you tube. Warren
You guys are a hoot! Ha'ha' love the mathematical side.if I ever get to the states im heading your way for a brew! Great down to earth viewing much appreciated:)
The first bike i rebuilt when i was twelve was a 4 stroke 250 and i made the mistake of putting the piston in backwards on first start it snapped a valve that went out the side of the head lesson learned that i will never forget.
my dads cr 250 wasnt rebuild for 20-25 years i believe, but most of that time was spent in a shed and the coolant pump cracked and caused him to overheat and destroy the cylinder and piston while racing me around our property
Hey Dave just watched your video on rebuilding the CR500. A couple of months ago you bought an RMZ450 from me and I just wanted to see how you guys and the bike are doing. We should get together and ride sometime. Let me know when you can. Thanks, Brice Boswell
Hey Nick, Great hearing from you! Yeah, I've been having a lot of fun riding the CR500 with my boys 450's! Thanks so much for the bike! It's a lot of fun roostin' all over my boys face! :)
I want one , got a 85 \ 86 RM 250 still gets my blood pumping but a 500 is king if i had RUclips videos back in the day I probably wouldn't have messed up so much ha live and learn the hard way won't do it again ding ding ding
gee for a new rebuild sure seems easy to kick,my rm 250 seems harder to kick and im 6'2"ft 210 lbs.. so no im no wimp.anyhow great video, i subbed for sure.
If Y'all are wondering why he has a boot on his right foot and a sneaker on the left is because he isn't going for a ride until it is broken in AND if you have ever kick started a 500cc motorcycle, you know a sneaker just wont do it. The motocross boots have serious arch support.
That Piston is Smaller then I thought it would be for a 500, I thought they were allot bigger lol My 450 Piston is a bit bigger. Cool video though was fun to watch.
thnx dh - during assembly u forgot mention the base gasket & reed bolck. m in the philippines, permenant visa - otherwise you'd have to contend w/major open class 'bush' mechanics competition...jugs bored on a 4 jaw, 15" swing lathe .... dont 'effin slip up or use anything less than belray amigo.
You're so right I did forget about the base gasket! So here it is guys here's the announcement don't forget the base gasket! :-) thanks for the insight!
This engine wont last too long without relieving the exhaust port bridge and drilling corresponding oil holes in the piston as per Wiseco's instructions!
Dave, so you do your first heat cycle after rebuild at idle only? Everybody has some way of doing it and I'd like to know your thoughts. BTW, I got a new saw last year and that's how I did the first run. Let it run for 30 mins (probably too long) at idle, cooled down, and ran 15 mins at half throttle max, cooled and then banged on her. Thanks.
Thanks so much! No, I didn't drill holes on the exhaust bridge. The shop here in Orlando that does the boring has been doing it for 39 years and did everything for me spot on. In years past, we used to have to bring the piston in with the cylinder for the shop to get the tolerances perfect. Now, they have it down to a science. Wiseco gives the exact tolerances for each piston and they calibrate the machine which does it perfectly. You're absolutely right though; the last thing you want to do is catch a ring! The guys at the shop actually told me that you lose hp when the champher the ports. I was pretty surprised. They told me that they precisely take the edge off the ports so it doesn't catch a ring, but if you taper them you lose some compression (thus power). All I know is the bike is a rocketship now! :) Hey, great input and thanks so much for the encouragement!
Yeah, I believe it! Good thing the old girl got some love :-) That is some good info on the shop and what they say about it all... seems like a lot of different opinions on the bridge relief and such. I just picked up a super low hour 2000, it still has the swingarm chain tension spec sticker and fender warning sticker... I have gone thru most of the bike just because, replaced a lot of stuff that didn't need it, etc. The piston/cylinder were within wear specs on the 89mm, so I just honed lightly and replaced with a new Wiseco 89mm, drilled the 2 holes on the bridge. I didn't relieve the bridge however, from what I gather, that is ok on a stock bore. Still waiting on a few parts before I button everything up. I live in Wyoming, so I have time!! Take care Dave.
Hey David , I live in winter park and I have a 87 cr500 , I want to put a new crank in it, do you have a video on that, I am pretty good turning wrenches , but never done a bottom end. What would you recommend ?
Hi Dave, Awesome Job ! But I'm just a little confused. I have a 1988 CR500 that I've had since 1990. I'm the second owner, bought it off a friend, everything all original , and the whole frame is Red , and the rear shock spring is Red. That wants me to think that yours is a different year ? Are you the original owner ?, or do you know the history of yours ? I thought Honda started using white color frames, later on, like early 90's. Something to think about . Keep up the good work !
i recomend not the follow the video....when you have engine damage like that, you need to replace the main bearings, the wrist pin bearing and the engine cases needs to be separated....the 500cc engine specially...this is not a usually piston changing because the piston was damaged and all the shrapnell was in the main bearings and sealings...thats why after the rebuild the engine makes noises... this video is a good only for ''how to change the piston''' while the engine is still in good condition and needs only piston change to prevent damage like yours or has a low compression ratio....i would recommend main bearings change and the connecting rod also as soon as possible....

Dave wouldve chuckled and said. Okie dokie. Glad someone was payin attention. Okay, alrighty.
Funny funny stuff! I would love to see that bass boat!

Watched your video for about 2mns before i felt compelled to comment, awesome video!
500 pistons a goddamn table
i gave away my old ones as foot stools for christmas gifts 😂
I bought a CR500 in 1988 - 2 years of great fun riding.

+Opferman Motors Dirtbiking Toby I thought you did the in house bachelor bake in your oven style? 😂 that was pre press years lol
Haha, I originally got the press to press in the clutch on the 1982 engine.
The 87 was the best CR Honda built. It was the closes thing to a factory ride.
Great vid good guy and props to the cameraman/assistant for good camera work.
I bet thing that thing is an absolute beast, biggest bike I have ever owned was a Kx-250, and that was more than enough bike for me. Good lesson as well, never rebuilt a bike but it was a good look of how to do it.
Hi David,
Glad you enjoyed it! :) Yeah, with a CR 500 you just point the bike in the right direction, turn the throttle, and hang on.
Fantastic video! Had a cr500 Imported from the USA to England it's a 2000 Model always wanted one great bike thanks for putting a great video on you tube. Warren
Thanks Warren! I'd love to have a 2000 or 2001 CR500! They're all great bikes and nothing beats turning the throttle on a CR500! Happy riding!!!
Great bike man love 500s like nothing else they are ...
You definitely know what your doing. I have the manual for rebuild and break in. Great job and sounds good.
Thanks Tyler! Happy riding to you!
This video is awesome! It helped me a ton doing the top end on my 97 500
Hey Derek, I'm pumped up that it was a blessing to you! Make sure you break it in right :). I KNOW you will. Happy riding!!!
Sounds awesome. FMF makes Honda C's amazing. Have to get one for my CR500
You guys are a hoot! Ha'ha' love the mathematical side.if I ever get to the states im heading your way for a brew! Great down to earth viewing much appreciated:)
This is crazy dude idk if I could handle this let alone above 500 cc bad ass
Dude
1988 was the last year for the non- upside down forks. They were excellent after revalving the cartridge stack. The motor was more linear than the 86.
It's crazy when you look at a Maico 700 piston makes the 500 look small.
Yeah but nobody cares about the maico 700 lol it's not a mud slinging cr500
@@hectorcelaya8738 it took you four years to come up with that? get a life
@@Hateline Cool Story Bro

thanks mate i learnt a bit now ill be able to buy a cr500 and give it a rebuild cheers
Awesome sound, absolutely love 2strokes I got a husky wr 360.
my dads cr 250 wasnt rebuild for 20-25 years i believe, but most of that time was spent in a shed and the coolant pump cracked and caused him to overheat and destroy the cylinder and piston while racing me around our property

great video long live the cr500's
Cool bike Dave I got a 04 yz250 smoker an doin a-little work on it but keep the good vids commin
Very knowledgeable and you sure know your way around that bike!

The kick back is brutal if you don't have the piston in exactly the right place.
That's exactly right! Bingo!

I noticed you did not drill two holes in the piston for lubrication. Did the box include instructions to do that?
the best time to paint the frame
you dont paint these frames they are powdercoated and paint doesnt stick to powder coat
pavel1809 the frame is most likely powder coated and paint doesn’t stick to powder coated metal
@@chrsmcwtrs so then what do you have to do? Sand blast then nickel plate.. what? That's not what you do.
sounds like a beast I love the piston comparisons. Do you still own it or is it for sale?
good video and commentary Dave... did you drill holes on the exhaust bridge section of the piston? Also, was the exhaust bridge relieved? Thanks!

Shouldn’t have polished intake ports they’re supposed to be like that to atomise the fuel air mix

How often between rebuilds does a cylinder need a rebuild "generally"? Like 3-4 rebuilds before it needs a re-bore (or new sleeve)?
Not until it's scored. You can do a shit Ton of rebuilds and never have to mess with the cylinder if you rebuild before it blows up
Wiseco makes 11 oversize pistons for the CR500 and when you're done with them you can get a new Barrel real cheap from Honda
Did it need a rebore with piston and rings, looked in good condition..
They are the head bolts on the top.
Sounds good
great video.. just wondering how much was the machining alone. I'm about to start a rebuild of 89 just want a estimate of what it will be.
I can find some for 500 to 600 not running.
wait a second if you ride near ryan villipoto's track you must be in washington right, or he must have a track some where else
You didn't rebuild the bike though, looks like you only put a new top end in.
Yea it's a top end rebuild
Opferman Motors Dirtbiking I think you need to show him the size of the piston on your maico 700 I think he will shit him self
david ehehehe
Good Job on that Honda now play those Yamaha Drums dude - By Chance Are You Jim Holley's Brother ?
Is that piston a forged wisco? Better than a standed cast .just needs a bit of extra warm-up time let that baby swell a bit!.caio for now
Hi mate, if you're gonna make a AF of that bike, would you sell you're 2000 250 engine?:-) - Mats
good video
What's involved in putting a 500 engine in that 250 frame
Hello why didn't u check the gearbox ?
I would have open the motor just to check everything
Do you not put any sealant on the head gasket?
great vid
should,ve done rest of bike while it was apart, tidy it all up,but nice bike I have 87-cr500 and you cant get no other bike as good as the cr500.
Yeah, you're right. :)
its the same exact power plant for the 250 from 92 to 01.....
Thanks for video
Awesome!!!
nice job bro!
Nice tutorial with good humour in it :D
Did you remember to change your crankcase lighting to leds, since its 2014?
Oh man, I forgot!!! Great idea though! I got side-tracked after applying the muffler bearing grease. :-)
It's 2020
20 years? I run my 250f for 21
Your to funny my friend
Has anyone else noticed he’s speeding his ass off🤦♂️😂
I got a 1998 honda cr500 with the 85 cr500 motor and I was wondering what are those bolts on the cylinder for?
Coolant drain.
thanks for the vid
I dont wanna know how hard the cr500 is to kick after a 2004 KX250, I mean DAMN that thing is hard for a beginner, how about this one? :D
The CR500 is about 3 times harder.
Nice!
The cr500r it's cool but look up a maico 700 it's a 700 cc 2 stroke
Daniel LaPrell thank you
Probably a good investment; those 500's are known for lacking in the horsepower department.
true I had an 85 that made more horsepower than my cr500 on nitrous, Honda really needs to step up their game
i recomend not the follow the video....when you have engine damage like that, you need to replace the main bearings, the wrist pin bearing and the engine cases needs to be separated....the 500cc engine specially...this is not a usually piston changing because the piston was damaged and all the shrapnell was in the main bearings and sealings...thats why after the rebuild the engine makes noises...
this video is a good only for ''how to change the piston''' while the engine is still in good condition and needs only piston change to prevent damage like yours or has a low compression ratio....i would recommend main bearings change and the connecting rod also as soon as possible....
if you want to make the bike as new yes , but it's crank seal is critical even though bearings are in good condition
