That was not a grasshopper, it was a mature Preying Mantis. What happened is that the claws of the Preying Mantis got stuck, and mom bird eventually realizes this, and rips them off, one at a time. She can be seen in the video eating the claws as she rips them off. Preying Mantises are instantly recognizable because they have a long slender body, 2 modified front legs that evolution developed into grasping and holding claws, and 4 long slender legs. Grasshoppers, on the other hand, have 4 relatively short legs, and the 2 backward facing hind legs are not short, they are backward facing and look like large thick legs, this is to propel the grasshopper forward when jumping. it's all in wiki articles and Google results, look it up online, they are both fascinating insects in their own regard.

I can't believe that little bird was able to eat that whole giant Mantis with out chocking to death on it he kinda looked like he was having trouble breathing there for a while!
