- A little recording of what I believed to be the most, memorable battles; taking place during the Surface Tension chapter of Black Mesa. you can really tell by this point in the story the struggle and failed attempts the HECU had while trying to fight back the invasion.
NOTE: This is the Steam version of Black Mesa and not the 2012, freeware version. You can buy it for 20 bucks and won't cost you an arm and a leg!

Black Mesa started development in ~2006. So there is a chance.
AFAIK i don't think O:BM would release the game in an unfinished state. So give them time.
Black Mesa is in unfinished state and it's been ~13 years. My point is be patient. TF2 took 9 years to develop by a corporation, let alone a team of few modders.
TF team has only a few programmers.
Seeing this honestly makes me want to see a half life game set during the events of the seven hour war. That would be an alien invasion game I'd pay to play

I think a sequel to Opposing Force would be perfect for a Seven Hour War scenario, where Adrian is woken up by G-Man to fight during its entirety.

So for you know, we working on this project now, sense I give up on valve making HL3 then we'll make it. Unfortunately main protagonist will not going to be Gordon Freeman. As at the time our project game is set he is in a stasis from Gman. So new protagonist, bad as as Gordon Freeman. In a 7 hour war, we still working on how to include Xen levels and get good satisfying ending knowing that earth lost the war. So we thinking of new villains and aliens to keep up the phase. not mentioning, new locations, weapons, vehicles and etc. Don't put much hope in this, it can take time. Sense we need a team and so far its only me that makes level design, models, graphical appearance of game ant etc. And my friend who programs and helps with my work. And we are aware that for a good game, we need decent team. There for budget to keep that team till end of the project. Im thinking of kick-stater project, but only when this is all set and ready to go.
You almost feel bad for them, they were doomed from the very start, poorly organized then left for dead to rub it all in, as well as not being told they were going to shoot innocent people.

I don't feel bad for them since they're psycho military meatheads. They'v been killing black mesa personal until this point so they don't deserve any sympathy.

Looking at it again, the grunts do question their orders about killing civilians and they are just simply carrying out orders, little did they know about the horrors inside Black Mesa
The HECU were actually tougher in earlier incarnations due to the fact they had the PCV among other things.
It wasn't uncommon for them to win most skirmishes.
Even in the current version they still try pretty hard
From my observation HECU,vs hound eye,bull squids and vorts will win 95% of the time,but if the HECUvAlien Grunts they lose every time
Late reply, but in this game based from their HECU models, I think they replaced the PCV suit with the standard-issue armor vests but I'm not sure.
They could survive a few shots (not counting right-click shots) from the shotgun tho

It could just be a special insert like real-world armor plating.
Given that they will add HEV zombies into the game in the Xen update, I really wish they would add PCV Soldiers into the game as a special enemy type too. I mean, you are already somewhat straying from HL1 enemies and they are both logical and a part of the overall canon, so why not?

yeah man, I know that feel. Especially in Surface Tension and Forget about Freeman... It's really sad, honestly I even don't wanna kill them anymore, but I have to...
In black mesa should be added extra behavior to soldiers in scenes when they're outnumbered by aliens that if you help them they just flee or saying like "If asked, we haven't seen each others." I mean for them to be friendly npcs from starts of the scenes. I'm pretty sure they all get killed if you don't heavily interfere.
And achievement to point this option out "Times change". Times changed for all soldiers to be assholes as well as the game to be less detailed.

The vortigaunts were mind controlled by the nihilanth. They were nothing but slaves during half life 1. In half life 2 they look up to freeman because he freed their entire race.
They do have morality, but they see the aliens and know the scientists caused it and feel no sympathy

My most memorable moment is the jets scene when exiting the pipe in surface tension
You can actually see the Black Mesa logo through the pipe and then see the jets with that iconic guitar strum (which I tweaked ingame so it'd play the original track from HL1)

Pastor of Muppets WHAT THE HECK MAN, I went both through Half-Life and Black Mesa twice and didn't realise that the mountain at the end of the pipe creates the Black Mesa logo UNTIL NOW! GREAT SCOTT!
why though? surface tension 2 is so much better than hazardous environments
One thing I'd always thought would be cool was if there was at least one sequence where the HECU would work with you, or at the very least not shoot you, for helping them. But I suppose it's not the worst thing in the world that such an idea didn't happen. T'was a thought mostly inspired by that one bit of Max Payne 2 where three enemy gangsters confuse Max for backup and work with him for a short while... before being told who max is and then turning on him if they didn't die to the other guys :p
I remember that sequence from Max Payne 2 and yes that would be a cool addition if the BM team added a small rendition like that. Perhaps if Gordon was about to be re-captured by the HECU only to be interrupted by an enormous force of Xen creatures, they forget about you and focused on the threat but if you stayed and helped them they would acknowledge that.
maybe have then even breath a sigh of relief and thank you before sending you on your way, praying that command wouldn't realize that they didn't try and kill you
I remember on the airstrikes level, I was having a shootout with a squad leader, but as I was about to finish him, *ONE OF THE AIRSTRIKES LANDED DIRECTLY ON HIM, KILLING HIM INSTANTLY*
God that’s terrible, imagine being a wounded marine lying in agony while there’s aliens overrunning your location and then your osprey just gets obliterated in front of you
Then, you see your nearby BMT explode by an orange popsicle all the while alien forces chip away at whoever’s left, that’s terrible
My favorite part of the game, is that the devs captured the feeling radio communication of the HECU and it fit the original HL1's ambience so well, you could also hear what's going on outside of the facility.

@@streylok439 because unlike freeman going on his powertrip HECU actually have to risk life and limb in a FUBAR situation, were rushed in without proper planning, etc.
Looking back at this one year old comment, the ones you ought to be rooting for are the scientists and black mesa security instead since they were worse armed but had the knowledge to stop the fubar from going uberfubar (and they did) eventually
@@streylok439 The Marines are demonized for having orders to kill civilians. However they themselves are still people, U.S. Soldiers sent into a catastrophic combat situation under false intel. During the intro of Opposing Force the Marines weren't even told the why or what of the deployment until they had already landed in Black Mesa. By that point it was already too late for many of them. From that point on they were horribly ill prepared and eventually out numbered as time went on. When it looked like the situation at the Facility was out of control the Government abandoned them. The ones that couldn't evacuate were either slaughtered by the Xenians, or killed in the Nuclear blast.

This makes me want a game like opposing force where your an HECU marine, but you go through events like these. Your osprey doesn't crash and your part of a squad who is trying to Evacuate Black Mesa. It seems like it'd be a cool game.

Isn't it funny that there is a stealth segment with the HECU when you go inside a hangar to find the Security Guard to open the door to the Lambds Labs?
"Stealth" unless you notice they're coded to all gather in one spot in the middle of the room, leaving them open to a rocket for four easy instant kills
I love the part when you meet the guard in Questionable Ethics. If you don't shoot the HECU after that the guard would actually sneak up behind a few crates and ambush the HECU after they got their backs turned.

I think two of my main complaints about Black Mesa is how immersion-lacking the HECU tanks are. What I mean is, the Abrams fire sluggish rockets and the IFV that tries to save the Osprey is not only slow, but the gun is extremely lackluster and can't even *hit* the enemies around it!
I know, talk about unrealistic. And an IFV wouldn't just explode from the melee attacks of a Xen Grunt or the lightning attacks from a Vortigaunt(unless it ruptured the fuel tank). It's really frustrating!

Half Life 1 was exactly like that.
I read a response somewhere that the munitions fired from the Tanks are slow on purpose so the player will see them coming and be able to dodge them. If they traveled at realistic speeds, which pretty much means instantaneously, combined with the A.I. near perfect aim tracking the player, you'd be one shot immediately. Yeah it's immersion breaking but I can see their thinking.
The most un realistic thing for me is the Abram not reversing in time because It has the speed of 45miles on road meaning it could reverse faster and since it was it even before it's Lazer went they should have survived its just frustrating and the fact that it lacks gunners on top and its turret isn't even that slow But eh it's for game purpose.
I replayed this scene many times trying to help them survive. They always get wrecked though.

Seeing the blood effects splatter all over the guns is cool and ive never seen that in a game, i wish gory games like quake or the new unreal had that...
left 4 dead has it with melee weapons, and in back 4 blood your entire character becomes a bloody mess

In erly concepts of half life The HECU was a death squad sent in to black mesa to quell and silence anything and everyone. They were infact designed and trained to deal with human/Alien warfare.
Imagine if they went through with that idea and there were only 9 marines in the entire game

Play Surface Tension with the Black Mesa Character Overhaul, and you'll feel even more bad for those Marines
I agree, it's my preferred way of playing Black Mesa now that it has been updated recently.
And if you want to make them more like Marines, you can use the USMC 8 Point Cover mod on steam which replaces the red beret with a BDU cap since Marines DON'T wear berets irl. At all.

Surface Tension, the uncut version. TBH, it should've stayed in this form but a member of the team left before the first version came out and we got the BMS 2012 ver until today.

The only thing I can say is that LAV needs to be fixed. I mean look at that gun the LAV! The LAV doesn't stand a chance against aliens so close it.
1:15 why everyone uses that Shotgun skin? When i played this game, the SPAS-12 didn't have that huge rail over it.

Honestly, this depiction clearly shows that the HECU aren't just mooks to be shot at. And I really did feel sorry for them during this portion. I didn't want to kill them, but the fact that they won't let me through without a fight forced me to.
I also recognize the voice actor, he was in Insurgeny as the security forces.

There's actually a game called half-life: decay that follows the events of Dr. Breen and two other scientists fitted with hazard suits. It was an exclusive for the ps2 and was included when you bought the original game for the console.

You know what would be cool. A mod that adds some animation at 2:00, so if you let the marines and the aliens fight it out the aliens end up taking out the marines in cool ways and knocking their van over, destroying it etc. it ends if you drop down. instead of that shitey stock animation of them all flailing against the APC
You'd think that once it went to shit for the Marines and they getting their asses kicked and Freeman saves a bunch of them... maybe, just maybe... you don't shoot at him, and you work together to stop the invasion.

The "cover up" mission still bugs me out. By sending 1000's of soldiers to Black Mesa the Government just added 1000's more witnesses. What was the next move: regroup all the HECU soldiers at one place and kill them all with a nuke?? So why not just nuke BM right away?

RouGeZH many of the Marines that had been extracted, from what was heard in the dialogue and with the Ospreys in Opposing Force, were probably questioned by Federal agents at the safe zones on what they had seen and done. Then the spooks would give them documents to sign and the Marines would be sworn to secrecy. If you think about it, that is probably what would happen!

I prefered the 2012 HECU which had a voice filter in their masks isntead of just the plain voice they go with now
It was to fit the aesthetic instead of just many unmasked H.E.C.U somehow with a filter. But it would be cool if Crowbar Collective somehow made both masked and unmasked have changed voices. voicelines.
