Funny I had to exchange my Brazilian license in Portugal (for a PT one) before being able to finally get a Dutch one. Otherwise, I'd have to take one from nothing and it would cost much more and be a pain to obtain. You make very good points. I just disagree on the phone number, provided you can keep something cheap (prepaid, if possible) just to keep your number active while you're here and receive SMS codes or use Zelle (it won't work without a "proper" American number). VOIP ones aren't good enough.
4:54 Absolutely! Your *health records* need to travel with you, regardless of what language they are in. Doctors and nurses need to know the details of your health history. It will avoid unnecessary testing, or health maintenance that is not due. Previous tests will serve as comparison, particularly if previously abnormal. This simple thing will save time, risk of complications, and probably save $. Another great video!
You are funny Kylie. I am Portuguese living in the States for many years.. Still…you info is bery helpful… Thinking of buying or renting in the Algarve…soon… Sorry..love Porto….but , but ..
You rock, Grandpa! 98 and still using technology! I hope I can do the same! Great video, so many things you probably don't think about, but it is and will eliminate some headaches/ roadblocks to moving abroad!
Interesting. I’ve been trying Porto for the last three weeks. Not a fan of heating my living space with a modest electric heater-in January-but I love the architecture and how walkable it is. The city, not the architecture. Some of my take-aways: decouple from the phone number, and help family with the adjustment. Get a an international-friendly bank account. Get a virtual mailbox. (Had never heard of this, so 👍👍.) And these preparations? Do them well in advance-as in, months. Make sure things work before they actually have to.
We're in a new building now and we've rarely had to run the heat this winter. :-) The older construction can have very bad insulation. This winter is also really mild. Thanks for watching, Rick. - Josh & Kalie
Great tips, curious about the virtual mail box. While you are in the process of moving to PT from US which address would you add to the virtual mailbox. And where the physical mail would be sent to? Thanks
How about all the regular protesting going on in Porto and Lisbon against governments there allowing too many foreigners into the country? The morale in Portugal is very low right now due to unaffordable housing. This poor country never had and never will have the proper infrastructure to deal with what’s going on there these last 10 years. Any foreigner not speaking the language will stick out like a sore thumb. The usually polite and helpful Portuguese are now turning sour with the foreigners, and rightly so! Foreigners be aware, you are NOT as welcome as it once was. I have been visiting friends and family there yearly and have witnessed this all over Portugal. Be careful!
Just some info for Australians, I had to go into the bank to organise the transfer to Portugal. But the security process is phenomenal and they put you at ease. Recommend Comm bank highly. For phone number its meaningless in Portugal as all communication is on the net. Obviously for really elderly people unfamiliar with tech, the advice given is spot on. In Portugal you need every government document updated within 3 to 6 months and notorised translated versions to Portuguese.
Couldn't understand the American sing-song very well, had to turn it down.😮 Also we Europeans have a very different experience. We can move our euros around easily and get jobs or property without any difficulty. Drive our own cars 🚗 in, eat the same food and definitely not desperate to find a Mac Donalds considering it as food!😂 Portuguese language is difficult though!
You seem nice. BTW, when I go to McDonald's (not often but sometimes) here in Portugal it is always packed full of...Portuguese people! I'm the only American in the place.
Agreed. I hate traditional banks like Santander, Wells Fargo and Bank of America, etc, and I stopped using them years ago. Financial services groups like Charles Schwab and Fidelity investments offer much easier and cheaper traditional banking and so much more. Combined them with WISE, and your financial life will be much easier both in the US and abroad.
Hi, I believe this is the second or third video you've posted a comment like this one and we replied with two videos of someone that we interviewed that fits your descriptions. We'll consider doing another one but we don't have any leads yet. - Josh & Kalie

How are you finding Portugal compared to Australia?
@LtW00dy aside from the language it's very similar. Relaxing lifestyle. Both countries have an excellent food, coffee and wine culture
