Relevant links to stuff I go on about:
To make your bag you will need:
    Contrast fabric (bag bottom) - 11” x 5” - cut two
    Main fabric (bag top) - 11” x 6.5” - cut two
    Lining fabric - 11” x 11” - cut two
    Drawstring casings - 11” x 2.5” - cut two
    Drawstring cord
Any embellishments such as d-rings or handles etc (in this tutorial I add a d-ring from an old bag, and make a quick and simple handle).
Interfacing (optional, not used in this tutorial)

You are an absolute sweetheart!! I have been to countless “how to make a bag” classes & believe me they were not that cheap to enrol, & have not got as much demonstration as you have just given. In fact one class I even left in tears 😢. Therefore I now have a hang up when it comes to making bags. I just loved your tutorial for which I’m very grateful, & think that you should stop calling them “dodgy” bags! 🤫. I usually think about the steps of the bag & then spend about an hour procrastinating about whether I should start or not. I will always keep this tutorial saved now as I admire how in between everything that was going on at your house, you managed to choose the fabric, cut out all the pieces & sew up a fabulous bag as well as showing all the steps you did, very clearly. I for one, can’t thank you enough 😇😇. Cheers for a fabulous tutorial that I will always keep handy. 🥰❤️😍😊💕😘

I only ever sewed at school, for one term each of two years, and I think I'd almost forgotten how.. RUclips and knitting and all the amazing project bags (and how expensive they are to buy and to get shipped to New Zealand, despite me valuing makers time and expertise immensely it's still cost I can't justify) made me want to make my own. Set up with a pattern from etsy, and all the materials from my LYS/LSS I managed to cut out all the fabric and interfacing pieces and I did okay stitching, too, ...right up until I hit the zip. This was a snag I couldn't get past and my bag was destined to remain a pipe dream.
Until I watched this! No zip, no interfacing, and lining that is one piece! And every step visible so I can see what it is I have to do. I'm really inspired, and I thank you so much for putting this out there for us! I think I can maybe achieve this, this might have to be my task for the week. Thanks Ali!

@@LittleDropsofWonderful Ali sorry to bug you again, but I got all my pieces cut out last night, and I actually have some interfacing from my last attempt that is iron on, if I were to use that can I just cut out an 11" by 11" square and attach it to the lining, and then do everything else that you did? My bottom fabric isn't very structurally firm so I wonder if I need it.

@@LittleDropsofWonderful I tagged you on my insta post, I finished it and it turned out perfectly! I'm the_sock_aholic.
Thank you so much for doing this tutorial, last time I tried I got so frustrated but I could literally follow along with what you were doing and could see exactly what I was supposed to do. If I'd hit boxed corners on a pattern I would have been stumped but they were easy.
      Thanks again!

Oh Ali, thank you for this video!! I am a rogue crafter who usually gives anything a go with out much planning or research (other than spending hours shopping for all the craft supplies I might need.. ha!) I want to make some project bags for my new found love of crochet as well to gift at Christmas but was dreading having to cut super straight lines to exact measurements. Not to mention having to learn how to box bottom! I've been enjoying both of your channels videos over the last few weeks and this video popped up on my side bar as a suggestion, well thank goodness it did. I've just finished my first not so dodgy bag with a box bottom and you made it so easy, thank you again!

How funny, I found a two co-ordinating pillowcases a couple of days ago (left by campers) that I thought would make a nice bag, but I don't have a sewing machine. I was only thinking last night whether it would be possible to make a simple drawstring bag using my overlocker. Your tutorial is really helpful, as it is years since I have stitched anything. If it happens I will show you the result!

Thank you. I'm what you'd call a dodgy sewist, and after making some simple gift bags for Christmas thought I could try a project bag. I watched a couple of tutorials and then I saw your and you explained it or so well. It's exactly what I want, it's just for me. Yay for bag tutorial! I love how you upcycle old clothing. I have a favourite shirt of my Dad's that I may do this with. I always love seeing how others do it as they usually have some little thing they do that is simpler/faster! For a marking pen, look for Pilot Fixion pens - they disappear with heat (i.e. iron) or friction from the included eraser. They work brilliant! I also cut my lining out after seaming my outer fabrics, because I can never get a perfect 1/4" seam. Way easier to cut the lining after because it will be the right size!
I sew around all three side of both inner and outer fabrics, then sew the drawstring casing to the lining. Then pop the lining into the outer fabric, wrong sides together and sew around the top. No need to leave a gap in the lining for turning (mostly because I am rubbish at nicely seaming that closed later).

Great job, Ali! I think you have given those wannabe bag makers hope! 👍🙂 After trying several different patterns, I make the one you demonstrated the most - in many different sizes. I make my boxed bottoms like you by cutting the squares instead of the folded pointed way. To me, it’s much easier. I want to get some cord as my drawstrings, but I have so much ribbed ribbon that I can’t justify buying any. The different colored ribbed ribbon works great, but I like the look of the rope. Your bag turned out fabulously! The fabric choices are beautiful. 😊 Oh! I know one thing I can share with you - like you cut out the pattern on paper, you can also cut out squares of different sizes for your boxed bottoms, so you don’t have to measure those every time. I have a little baggy full of different sized cardboard squares. 😆

I'm with you there and upcycling old clothes, curtains, table cloths, cushion covers, (the hardware from them too) you name it. It's
a great source of fabric and re-using something too, a win -win. I'm joining in with the dodgy bag MAL and stitch Maynia this year and I need some cross stitch project bags, some of those will be made with upcycled fabric for sure. I use ribbon a lot of the time for draw strings, holds up well. I too just 'wing it' when making them. For the box bottom, I just sew it as is (no cutting)then turn it , line up the seams and sew across at an angle across the corner tip. (sometimes I cut that tip off afterwards, sometimes not.) Whatever works right?! haha Well done, thanks for sharing!

Thank you for doing this tutorial! I have watched other videos on how to make these bags and this was by far the most helpful and easiest to understand.
And I have to say that your "dodgy" bag looked pretty perfect to me!

great tutorial Ali! and not dodgy at all. I've made bags with zippers before, but this is easier. I used ribbon for the drawstring and I didn't have enough of the 2 that looked good with my fabric so I used 1 ribbon on one side and a different one on the other side and it looks cute that way.
