I bought this pistol impulsively for $200. Best gun purchase I ever made. This pistol is an absolute tank and does everything I want it to do. It’s more accurate than any pistol I’ve ever fired. Consistent tight groupings at the range, many through the same hole. Low recoil and fits well in my large hands. I have many firearms but this is my go-to favorite handgun.
You either didn't know or forgot one major thing about this great pistol! It's slide runs inside the frame thus giving it more surface to slide on and lowers the barrel to hand height giving it less re-coil. The original Swiss made P 49 made by Sig is the most accurate out of the box pistol ever made. The Star 30MI is made the same way. Check out the P 49 made in Switzerland.
This was the spanish national police-issue pistol during the 80s and 90s. This was my father's gun until just a couple short years ago, when agents got their pistols switched to the USP Compact 9mm. I absolutely adored this gun and we both miss it dearly. Its tank-like feeling and extreme accuracy are out of this world. And let me tell you, that gun went through some serious punishment over the years, and my dad wasn't one to maintain his pistol religiously. It always fired. In any climate and cleaning conditions, it just fired.
I'm actually really happy I saw this video. I found out my grandfather is giving me his that he bought from a worker of his. I have been looking for a video that showed the breakdown and strip of the firearm but this was great and I'm always happy to watch a video of a fellow New Mexican too.
I also have a Star 30M, and as a range gun/plinker it is my favorite 9mm in my herd. Overbuilt, solid, dependable. I disabled the mag safety, and eventually refinished it with stainless Duracoat. One novel feature about this pistol is that it is modular construction and is designed to be COMPLETELY stripped using no external tools. The slide stop is used to depress a springloaded pin in the base of the grip and the hammer group is removed through the top of the frame, which then allows the grips to be removed. Shooting it is quite fun, due to the lack of felt recoil and it is very accurate. Factory mags are scarce and CAN be found if you look, but the Promag aftermarket mags are just barely serviceable-avoid them! I completely agree with your comment that if you happen upon one for sale it is a great value for $250-$300.
I just inherited this firearm from my dad today. I'm a ruger girl, have both the P89 and 94, as well as the p90. In comparison, how does this weapon perform. It was my dad's go-to daily carry for years.
My local shop has one for $249 and I've been thinking of getting one but after reading about how much you and many shooters below love the gun I will definitely get it. To me a 1990s gun isn't old. I have a 90's Kahr 9mm with real wood grips, and I have a Spanish 1911, Llama .45 which I bought new in 1973. It's been a wonderful gun. Thanks for this video.
Just picked up my own Star Mod 30 9mm for about 320$ (Guns do cost a little more here in Norway). Just wanna say, wow man. You were so right. It's a FAT grip, but I've got large hands, so it just nestles in my palm. Thank you for the review, definitely tipped my scale and made me buy this gun. I was fortunate to find one that looks pretty much new, with no wear on it at all.
The Star BM was used by the South African Defence Force during the Border War years. Some 30M's made it into service with the mechanised infantry. Based on how indestructible they were, I bought the Star 30PK as my private carry. The 30PK was basically the 30M with a light alloy frame and shorter slide/barrel. I put in excess of 50 000 rounds through mine before I sold it to move to Canada I would give up a kidney to own another. Edit: there is a clip/lever in the grip, which of removed, allows one to fire without a magazine present. The downside is the lever put a little pressure on the mag to stop it rattling inside the grip. I ran mine without the lever but never stopped trying to find a way to stop the incessant (but slight) movement of the mag.
This is the first semi auto pistol I bought way back in 2007 and I still have it. Very accurate and hardworking pistol! In my humble opinion this gun is underrated! See also the 45ACP version.
I have one of those, a model 30MI. I bought it new in around 1991 or so. I'm actually going to shoot it tomorrow. I haven't shot it in years. Mine is a bit picky on ammo unfortunately. I also have a Star Firestar 9mm. One of the first compacts, although being all steel it's heavier than even my full size Ruger SR9. It's still a cool gun though and very much like a 1911 in function.
great gun i must say for the price. i have the 30 pk model which is the lighter version because it has an alloy frame...never had a jam and have pumped thousands of rounds no problem
very happy to have one, better than my first pistol,a 915 S&W. Heavy pistol, good accuracy. do not forget one thing:never shoot without security if no cartridge..pinfire may break.
Oh, man! I rented one of these at an indoor range in the San Fernando Valley in the late 80's. It has always stuck with me what a sweet shooter it was. YES, it was heavy but, boy, did it feel nice. Thanks for reminding me about this great gun.
Just had the op of shooting one of these at a friend's place the other day. I was imedeately impressed. Very impressed. It was accurate and shot every configuration on the table with no issues. It even suffered the humiliatin of having our muddy terp collapse under weigh t of rian, and drenched it with brown water and grit.. It didn't care, and we got it so hot it dried out. My smallish hands had no trouble holding it and it reminds me of the CZ-75 in its looks. The single action trigger is phenomenal. I'm on the lookout for one.
I read about a 30M that was used as a rental gun at a Southern California shooting range that reportedly has fired over 80,000 rounds w/o any parts breakage!
What I like best about this pistol is that the heavy weight does a great job in mitigating recoil, and muzzle flip...followup shots are quicker and right on the target. Very instinctive shooting gun!
Another thing that’s nice is if the hammer is cocked back you can pull the safety lever farther down towards the safety and it will release the hammer safely. So you don’t need to do the old trigger hammer release.
Check whether the CZ75/85 magazine doesn't fit, and if it does (which is probable) you just have to braze the stop teat on the right side. It's an attractive gun to me and one that will last forever or at least can be repaired with common tools if needed in a post-apocalyptic scenario :)
I bought one my self .I like it a lot .been looking for this gun for a while in my local gun store Finley found it .easy shooting reliable 15+1 mag. and I got 3 extra mags with it . over all it's a good gun
i just bought this exact gun, although slightly older i think as the star brand name looks different. i haven't had a chance to shoot it because ammo is so hard to come by these days in TN. i absolutely love it so far, even without shooting it! very heavy, but you can just feel the craftsmanship and quality when you hold it. thanks for the vid, i enjoyed it and will be showing it to whoever i sell this gun too someday! lol everyone else having a hard time getting target rounds these days?
Appreciate your review. I owned one of these for several years. When I was stationed at Ft Riley, a buddy and I went up to a gun show somewhere in Nebraska. The table that caught my eye had 3 handguns that I thought were cool. When I think about it later, it's like Goldilocks, I checked out 3, and one was just right. The Browning Hi-Power, sure, historic, proven. But the thumb safety was really small. The Smith&Wesson M59. Neat, a Smith, 15 rnd (I think). Rattled like a bag of beans, bb's, whatever rattles really loudly. And then the Star 30. Star? Never heard of it (remember, 1987, magazines were the knowledge) $300 1987 dollars. Kept it for years, never malfed. Say it again. Never malfed. I regret every gun I've ever sold. Even the Raven.
I've owned several Star 9mm's over the years. Haven't had a bad one yet. I presently have a Model BM that serves as my everyday concealed carry and a Model 30P, the shorter barreled police version of the 30M. They are all steel so they're not lightweights but you have no felt recoil with either gun and both are accurate at reasonable pistol ranges. As an aside, the Star model 28 beat out both Ruger and S&W in the competition for the US trials to replace the Colt 1911 A1.
This pistol has a feature you either didn't know it had or forgot to add to your video. It is a feature that lowers recoil and helps accuracy. You see very few pistols with this one major feature or should I say "Difference" it has from other pistols in this category. The Slide travels "Inside" the Frame not "Outside" like almost all other pistols made. This lowers the sight plane and lowers the travel of the bullet. It makes the pistol Flip up less. Pistols that have the Slide sitting up very high on the frame will flip really hard when shot. There are two other pistols that are very popular and accurate that have the Slide inside the frame. The CZ 75 and the most accurate and best pistol ever made ( In my Opinion)The Swiss P210. The weight of the Star 30M is also a factor in recoil and the ability of this gun to stay on target better than any other pistol I have shot. I own 3 of these. Two in a Blued finish and one Stainless. All three shoot great and are the most accurate pistols I own. I can't afford a P 210! I think the average price for an older original P210, not the new P210 called the Legend, is about $3000 or higher. But you are right on when you tell everyone to get one of these pistols. I think it is the best buy in a defense weapon, target weapon, or just plinking if you like plinking with a larger caliber than a .22. Nice Video but wish you had mentioned the Slide.
I realize your post is two years old but had to reply. I share your enthusiasm for this pistol. I bought two back in the early nineties. I own several SIG P210's and this pistol reminded me of a DA version. Swiss quality is tops and this gun seems equal to me in construction quality. As a machinist and gunsmith the M30 really impressed me and I own SIG's! I love the modular construction of the firing mechanism, and the internal slide rails. It appears way overbuilt for a 9mm. I heard of range rentals firing over 18,000 rounds w/o repairs. That's a good thing because parts for these are tough to find. They seem rather scarce around here but when found are usually a bargain. If I see another my impulse would be to buy it. Two are not enough!
One range gun shot well over 50,000 rounds and never cleaned. It was an ad in g un magazines and the number increased each month. I sold mine when I was financially compromised. I sure wish I had it back.
I bought one at a San Benardino sheriffs auction back in the '80's. It finally came back to me, rather circutiously, and it was in bad condition. The front sight had been milled off, and there were a series of five holes drilled on the sides of the frame. My good friend, and buddy, for whom I was caregiver, was a fire arms manufacturer. Not like Colt, Sig, or CZ.but very inventive. He built a belt fed AR -15. He died, unknown from complications of hepatitis. As in "dirty needles" in the '70's.
Smith & Wesson 5900 series magazines work well as a replacement mag, but follower won't activate the last round hold open. I fix that with some JB Weld. Works great!!!
I have a strange story. I was firing my 30M the other day, and as I'm looking down the sights, I notice a hole in the rear of the slide that didn't use to be there. Somehow the little "plug" that fits in that hole came out while shooting, and was, thankfully, at my feet. I don't think it serves any purpose other than cosmetic. I have no idea why this happened as I bought it new in the early 90's and have put a lot of rounds through it. Was my first 9mm. Took it home and was able to re install by dropping the firing pin block. Could see no wear or anything when putting it back. Really puzzled. Concern over no spare parts caused me to put her away. Lots of memories. Shoot my CZ 75 now.
Greetings from a fellow spaniard. We are allowed to have handguns in our country! All you have to do is obtain an F-class license for sport shooting in federation-registered clubs :)
Bro how are there not more comments about this being a cz75 clone? Like bruh, I’m flabbergasted. It’s a clone of a IMI Jericho 941 without the bullnose. In other words they are ALL clone/copies of the Ceska Zbrojvka model 1975. Or simply the CZ 75, with a slide mounted decocker/safety.
The 30mi seems to be harder to find then others.i have the 30mi just like that one .but it's my favorite .took me two years to get in my local gun store. This model was meant for use in India for military use but the contract was never filled .
I see another review: "very accurate" THIS was the best value 9mm double-action small hand of 1990. I bought a Glock 19 and a 30M Star. The 30M is by FAR THE BEST PISTOL, most accurate of it's era. GOOD LUCK FINDING ANY BETTER GUN AT ANY PRICE> GET ONE.
I have owned mine since 87 and have fired at least 15,000 without incident. I love that it weighs more than 3 pounds loaded. I saw some pics of a guy boasting about his 6.5 inch group at 25 yards. Um? Why he was shooting with his eyes closed I guess we will never know.
My father owns this one i believe, it took me sometime to find it because he doesn't carry it anymore. I saw some weird coloration on the grip so i wanted to learn more about this gun. I'm gonna watch your other video of it so maybe i can help to clean it up or something. I'd love to shoot it again, it's been over 10 years since i last shot it. I was barely a teenager back then but i managed at least one headshot on the shooting range (could have been beginers luck but it wasn't terribly heavy that i couldn't handle it). So it's nice to learn more about it, thanks for the video :)
Spanish guns are far better than italian guns. Italian guns are junk. But Spanish guns are extremely accurate, beautiful and a dream to hold and shoot. A true work of art.
I asked a Swiss gunsmith for his opinion on the STAR 30M and he replied: It is the idea that Spaniards have had of a SIG P.210 with double action and 15 cartridges magazin.
I bought one of theses back in 1989 new for $250, I found magazines for$25 from Numriech arms. I bought this gun because a gun shop owner in Texas was renting them out for range time, and the owner claimed that he had one with a MILLION rounds run through it ,and it was still not worn out !!
It was in SVA (Servicio Vigilancia Aduanera) and Guardia Civil. Policia Nacional used as reglamentary Star 28PK, similar to the 30M, with alloy frame and shorter barrel. Replaced by HK USP
I have a Model 31P. Very similar to this one but the rear sight dots are white and the front has a white dot too, not just a ramp. The end of the barrel is a little different too, but overall extremely similar. Shoots great but mine isn’t in as good a shape as this one.
Yesser, but mine does not eject the spent cartridge. About 1 out of 10 or at least one in a mag full ? Suggestions ? Oiled slide really well, increased reload powder amt, and shot sideways hoping.
I had one in the 90's,.I put 10 HOT Uzzi (IMI) hollow points into a 1 & 1/2 inch group at 50 ft.It was an awesome pistol and was extremely accurate.I wish i still had mine-sold it to by a S&W model 59,was thinking of going into law enforcement,ex talked me out of it.59 was a POS.
Excellent quality they use to make weapons for the SS. This pistols are a keeper made from the best Spanish steel!! Used by 29 police forces in the world. Keep it!!!
Need a barrel & bushing for mine, if you ever happen to run across one. I've been looking for one for over 10 years at Numrich's E-Parts, with no luck. One of my favorites guns. Thanks for posting.
i have one of these ,,, something strange I noticed though , my stampings ,STAR , and serial number are on opposite sides and mine is polished mirror shine ,, awesome gun
Great gun heavy accuracy is fantastic bought brand new thinking 86-87 still beautiful shape ohhh and the two original mags 👍🏼 . Is my 1st of many semi-auto
I got a 30M I paid too much for & the magazines are hard to find but I don't care. These are unbelievably simple, fantastic pistols if you don't mind the weight. In my opinion there's no need to get a CZ 75 if you've got one of these. They have a lighter version as well, I think its an aluminum alloy frame.
I bought one of these probably about '97 and have had a dickens of a time finding extra mags - I've got an original 15 rd. and an aftermarket 10 rd. I've offered to sell it to three different friends for a whistle and a song - most recently for only $225. After the last "no thanks", I decided I'll never part with it. Never any feeding problems though had to have the trigger bushing replaced once - which cost me all of $7.
i have one of these ,one of the best pistols i have ever had ,and since there was not alot of them brought into the U.S.A. , if you need a firing pin sarco inc. has them ,and a cz 75 recoil spring will work in these if yours is worn out ,anyway because of the weight makes it easy to keep on target ,if anyone wonders it will safely handle plus p ammo the psi rating on the model 30 is over 42,000
Is it possible to get a new magazine, firing pin, etc. for a M30 9MM over there? I love my gun, it's the best shooting pistol I have ever owned, I just don't want to get caught without any spare parts. Are there any gunsmiths over there that may have them? Thanks beforehand my friend!
I find it interesting that the trigger will still release the hammer with the safety on. It does appear that when you were to take a shooting grip on the gun that the safety would almost naturally be pushed into the fire position
@museack Actually, this pistol withdraws the firing pin into the slide when the safety is applied, which allows for dry firing without snap caps with no worries of damaging the firing pin.
I hope you like yours as much as I do mine. It has never misfired or jammed and shoots like it's a .22 cal. rifle, it's extremely accurate. I out shoot everyone I go shooting with, I hope yours is as good as mine!
A real pity that the STAR factory closed. The 30M is an old gun, ugly, fat and heavy, but if you take good care of it, it's like a girlfriend who will always be faithful to you and will never, ever, ever fail you. I have had this weapon and many others, but the 30M I miss it a lot. Good video. Greetings from the old Spain.
I asked a Swiss gunsmith for his opinion on the STAR 30M and he replied: It is the idea that Spaniards have had of a SIG P.210 with double action and 15 cartridges magazin.
Nice review man!! IMDB Weapons Database brought me here when I was looking up the guns used the LEON:THE PROFESSIONAL..one of the Fatmans bodyguards had it..and when looking at it this gun..and the Llama M-87 really interested me! Of course Leon's guns too...imdb said his Beretta 92-fs's (custom compensator) had a compensator and a threaded silencer too? Is that possible...I'm not a know all on guns ..I mean it looked like it worked..but u know.. movies!? Lol Loved the vid...but I dont know if u have ever used the IMDB WDB site...I'm a big movie buff..so I always wanna know what guns are usee...lol
I have the M30 9MM, the dang thing is like shooting a .22 rifle, it's the most accurate pistol I have ever owned. I had a S&W 59 too, your right, they are a POS.
Gun Parts Corp. out of new yorkU might find parts on eBay too.Ive seen a few like Miga and others who carry parts for diff guns just by yahooing the part and putting it on images.

Spanish guns are fine gems, unfortunately they are really hard to find here in Canada. Astra and Star pistols are simply a beauty

I bought a 30 M in 1990. Shot often back then. Luved it. I agree it is very heavy and very accurate.

Bought mine for $200. Love the hell out of it. One of my favorite guns to shoot.
“Not that great looking”? What are you even talking about? That thing is beautiful! I’m looking at a 30M New Old Stock I’ve got my eyes on! 😎
Right! Beauty is what beauty does!
I have one of those, a model 30MI. I bought it new in around 1991 or so. I'm actually going to shoot it tomorrow. I haven't shot it in years. Mine is a bit picky on ammo unfortunately. I have had 3 over the years and did handle an aluminum frame model at a gun show in 2004. Good old pistol.
I have the Star 30pk and I install a ultra star return spring in it, all I could find. It fits but double action works sometimes.

They are all steel so they're not lightweights but you have no felt recoil with either gun and both are accurate at reasonable pistol ranges. As an aside, the Star model 28 beat out both Ruger and S&W in the competition for the US trials to replace the Colt 1911 A1.
Nice video! I agree, this is not an "show off" gun, but rather a heavy duty weapon. It shoots like dream and very reliable. Will make great HD.
Hello from Spain, glad to see that you enjoy our pistols and sad because we are not allowed to have pistols here :(
Best!
me encanta esa pistola ...la cargo donde sea que valla
I always wondered about the different model markings on the 30M and 30MI. I have both and other than markings can see no difference.
VERY accurate military and police pistol...If you see one for sale, buy it quick...this is a dumb review of a great pistol.
I have one I love this pistol it's extremely accurate. No recoil .took me 2 year's to find it in my local gun store. soon as I found it I bought it .
D XD
I asked a Swiss gunsmith for his opinion on the STAR 30M and he replied: It is the idea that Spaniards have had of a SIG P.210 with double action and 15 cartridges magazin.
There is also a barrel bearing/sleve in the slide under the front sight,At least on mine,Circa 1988. later.
Hi, nice vide. Would you please make a video on how to remove the grip panels?. Thanks.
I bought one of theses back in 1989 new for $250, I found magazines for$25 from Numriech arms. I bought this gun because a gun shop owner in Texas was renting them out for range time, and the owner claimed that he had one with a MILLION rounds run through it ,and it was still not worn out !!
Beautifull gun an very good. I´d used on duty for years and its a great firearm.
+Miguel De Unamuno This pistol still as side arm in some police departments in Spain?
Keep it!!!
Any chance you know how to remove the Safety from the Slide?
I own this pistol and you are right on. It's amazing!!! Definitely one of my favorites. Have you found an original clip yet?
I bought 2 at Numreich arms, about $20 apiece
Got mine in 1991 already, still shoot like new!
Never any feeding problems though had to have the trigger bushing replaced once - which cost me all of $7.
i have one of these ,one of the best pistols i have ever had ,and since there was not alot of them brought into the U.S.A. , if you need a firing pin sarco inc. has them ,and a cz 75 recoil spring will work in these if yours is worn out ,anyway because of the weight makes it easy to keep on target ,if anyone wonders it will safely handle plus p ammo the psi rating on the model 30 is over 42,000
I don't know about you but I think that's a beautiful weapon
Is it possible to get a new magazine, firing pin, etc. for a M30 9MM over there? I love my gun, it's the best shooting pistol I have ever owned, I just don't want to get caught without any spare parts. Are there any gunsmiths over there that may have them? Thanks beforehand my friend!
"It is heavy as it needs to be to make you Strong!💪"
Great vid, as always ;). This gun looks good to me, i like the design of the handgrip
Just got one for 285, cant wait to get to range with it and check it out.
Boy, you have that right! Mine's extremely accurate!

I have the model 31P and it's a great piece for the truck.
I have one 31 P too!!! and I am very proud of it. I also have a FR Target cal .22
I hope you like yours as much as I do mine. It has never misfired or jammed and shoots like it's a .22 cal. rifle, it's extremely accurate. I out shoot everyone I go shooting with, I hope yours is as good as mine!
Does the firestar takes cz-75 mags?
Im buyin one similar to this one it has a 7 digit serial number, wen were they made? Thanks
I wish I could find one in that price range. All the Stars I've been seeing are pushing well into the $400 range.
Damn zero recoil.... Nice review by the way.
You can find them for $250-350 depending on condition. My friend sold this one for 280
I asked a Swiss gunsmith for his opinion on the STAR 30M and he replied: It is the idea that Spaniards have had of a SIG P.210 with double action and 15 cartridges magazin.
I got one here star model 30p..but the problem is..i lost the mag
Did you buy it from your coworker?
Dude that thing is badass
Kitna price hai
notice it stays on target ...on account of the all steel construction ..
I dont think the 30Ms have a removable bushing. If you have B or a variation of the B, they do.
Just found one of these on auction. Planning on winning it!
I need to get two clips for mine , where can I can get them ? It doesn't have Spain on the trigger guard and it is stamped MOD. 30 MI ? Thank's !
Pat Cushion check out Jack first gun shop
Price???
good accurasy at 25 meters?
and Starfire 30 MI ?
the same?
beautiful gun..
very nice, i just missed out on getting one at my local dealer
IC that you bought this for $280, right? If so, I agree, this represents a very good value for this firearm.
Thanks for the video!
I have the M30 9MM, the dang thing is like shooting a .22 rifle, it's the most accurate pistol I have ever owned. I had a S&W 59 too, your right, they are a POS.
Tengo uno de 31m y se me traba alguien me puede ayudar lleve en la armeria y me dice que esta en perfecto estado
I have a 31pk model I have only shot 100 rounds good shooting though.
Any extra mags for sale? :)
