As someone whos family has gone to this park since the early 2000's, its strange the emotional attachment we have to this park. Its a shame that we have gotten somewhat unlucky with our ride removals, but at the same time weve been so blessed with our additions. Bias aside, TT and i305 IS FOR SURE the best 1 -2 punch

I've always found it amazing how creative the Kings Island/Dominion design team was. Disneyland's enters through a "Main Street USA" with a stereotype of an American midwestern town, with a castle at the end acting as the wienee to draw people in. Kings Island/Dominion has an "international street" with the Eiffel Tower acting as the wieene to draw people in.

Volcano was amazing and I've heard KD didn't want to close it, but they had no choice. They couldn't find parts for it bc it was so unique. Also, they added so much to the waterpark this year. The HUGE waterhouse/playhouse, the kiddie pool, and tons of smaller waterslides. It looks amazing. It's in the area where the second wave pool used to be and they did an excellent job with it. They added a food truck area with lots of seating and food options where the smaller playhouse/waterhouse used to be.

Kings Dominion is my second home park, and has always been the talk of those in the DMV as the prime amusement park. While I don’t get over to this park very often, I’m sure that’ll change when I get my drivers license because this place looks miles better than I expected it to. Cedar Fair may have removed a lot of rides, but they really do focus on the quality over the quantity here.

I only visited this park once and that was in the Summer of last year and honestly, everything was as perfect as it could’ve been. The staff were good, the rides were awesome and I was most surprised by how charming the park was. It’s a really chill and relaxing atmosphere and I really loved it. I hope Cedar Fair continues to pour more money into this park as that one day I visited was one of the greatest days I ever spent at a theme park.

KD is my home park as well. I’ve been going ever since I was like 3 years old and it was run by Paramount. I agree entirely, it’s like night and day with how much they’ve improved the look. It did used to have a reputation of being a bit sketchy but nowadays it’s much improved.
I’m hopeful for more design changes, as you mentioned the front gate could use love, as can that back section with i305.
Im surprised you didn’t mention Dominator or Wind Seeker. Both are pretty big rides. Maybe a cool fact to have mentioned was the KD has 4 attractions over 300 feet.
Thanks for making the vid it was a ton of fun to watch my home park get some love from you. It’s well deserved

Awesome review as always. Carpenter here, and one school of thought is to let pressure treated lumber sit for a year so the chemicals evaporate before the paint traps them in and rots the wood.
I have always been fine with waiting 3 months, but maybe they are playing it safe on the racer.
Looking forward to our visit here next week!

I feel very lucky to call Kings Dominion my home park (along with BGW). I agree with many points that were discussed here. The atmosphere has massively improved over the past decade, along with the food and events. A lot of the rides here are still some of my favorites even though some are tame, including Backlot and Boo Blasters. I also feel very lucky to live only 20 minutes away from Intimidator 305 and Twisted Timbers, which I consider some of the greatest roller coasters ever built. Overall, I would highly recommend to anyone that they plan a visit as soon as possible. I have a lot of memories with this park, and I still have a lot more to make throughout the rest of my life. Thank you, Taylor, for giving everyone your thoughts on Kings Dominion. I hope the park gets more attention because of it.

My friend TJ never wanted to go to KD again after that trip XD.

as someone who works at the park currently I can confirm that some of the events are a lot of fun even to work, and not only because during haunt everyone got bumped up to 20/hr. I work in games and its suffering to do my actual job but fun to talk with guests. If you see someone at the park shouting on the microphone about trash anime t-shirt choices that's probably me.
also the best part of haunt was learning the names of the monsters including the guy who had a megaphone "his name was alex" So that whenever people came to games for shelter from haunt monsters I would shout "HEY ALEX THEY'RE OVER HERE!!!!!!!!!" and watch them scatter.

I was just there on the 21st, having trekked out over four hours from near Philly to get there. Twisted Timbers is always lit, huge favorite of mine, and I hit up Intimidator 305 again and it was more enjoyable than I remembered that one time. In fact I wanted to get a back row ride later on but I never got to because it shut down early evening. But I also adored the live shows (no Tower 9 though), and the Jungle X-pedition area was really cool in and of itself. The park was much more refurbished it felt than when I went last year. I was glad I made a return!

So K.Dominion holds a special place in my heart as well.
I remember they use to have this house you would walk through, and each room was done in some kind of optical illusion. I remember to exit the last room the floor was at a complete tilted angle, I loved going through that house.

It’s a gorgeous park with all the trees and landscaping. The park is surrounded by VA woodlands and hasn’t been encroached upon by development like KI, Carowinds and Canadas Wonderland. That makes it even more special.
International Street Is the most beautiful entrance of any park. Kings Island has better coasters but it’s a barren drab park compared to KD.
The ugly parts of KD are actually leftovers from Paramount and even KECO. The go karts, sky coaster, back lot coaster, the front water park in the hole, and the FoF area. These areas are the only things holding the park back from being more beautiful than Busch Gardens through the entire park. BG has no area that even compares to I Street so I believe KD will surpass BG by far if these leftover Paramount/KD areas are cleaned up and rethemed.
What they just did with Jungle X to make it cohesively and detailed themed is incredible. They went the extra mile and rethemed older attractions. Hopefully they will correct those flawed areas in the future with the same level of detail. Area 75 anyone?
One negative factor of the park is the lack of real family rides (train, monorail, skyway, quality dark rides-slow rides that everyone can ride together.). If you bring a non thrill riding adult there, there is little for them to do. The Park had these rides at one time but Paramount removed them. That’s one area to Busch Gardens definitely excels in.
The other area where BG. excels is that they have more sit down entertainment venues (although BG continues to cut their live entertainment quality). Too much stand up entertainment at KD in the hot sun.
I agree the water park should be in the back. It’s really nice there are surrounded by trees. The front part of the waterpark just feels crammed and dated. However I think they should return Lake Charles to its former glory with that land
The only issue I have with operations is the way the run Racer 75. It’s such a great racing coaster with its synchronized lift hill but they hardly ever run both sides to save a few dollars in payroll. There aren’t that many racing coasters left in the world and they have a unique experience that they don’t allow the customers to experience. And it definitely needs some paint like KI Racer revived. Maybe for its 50th? Just be thankful they didn’t thunder Road it.

Nothing was more relaxing than sitting under the trees and eating Larosa's Pizza while watching the fountain. Management needs to realize than chilling out is just as important as thrills.

15:30 I feel the same way about California’s Great America. They’ve really gone great lengths to make the park nicer since I started going a decade ago, including adding a bunch of new rides, repainting/renovating vintage flat rides, paving over ugly asphalt with bricks and adding planters/flowers, painting rides/buildings, adding new restaurants, restoring old music, reintroducing the theming on The Demon and building a brand new, well-themed water park. It’s a shame what’s going to happen to it within the next decade but as of now it’s easily an upper-mid tier Cedar Fair park.

KIngs Dominion was my home park when I was a kid in the 1970s. I was not into thrill rides at the time, and even then, the park's ride lineup was heavily thrill-oriented, to the point that I didn't like it as much as Hersheypark or Busch Gardens Williamsburg--there was less there for me, and while there was some nice theming especially in the International Street area, it was less of an experience to just be there. But I liked the Eiffel Tower and the Lion Country Safari Monorail (yes, they had a safari park back then--I think the drive-through was a separate admission but there was a Von Roll monorail from the theme park that went through it). I remember riding the original kiddie dark ride in The Lost World, "The Land of Dooz" (before it was Smurf Mountain).

...The other thing I remember is getting rained on a lot--the science of weather prediction was not as advanced in those days. Lots of running around in hastily bought rain ponchos to get to a covered show or something, while torrents of rain poured down and thunder boomed all over.

They gave us their family tickets and it came with meal vouchers too. Never had to wait in line unless it was a new ride. Sadly Volcano would still break down. And the hate for anaconda? I love that ride! You can stay in the car when it returns and go again! Always empty it seems! 😂

Very good video. I have been going to Kings Dominion since the 1980's much has changed over the years. The Volcano will always be my favorite ride. Hypersonic was just ok it would have been a good experience...Storm Runner at Hershey Park is a much more complete ride. As a Cedar Fair Platinum Pass Holder I will enjoy Kings Dominion until they close for the season. Keep up the good work!

Kings Dominion has a great spot in my heart. My favorite ride is the Dominator. It's just so smooth. I am glad to have experienced both Hypersonic XLC and Volcano before they closed. Both insanely unique rides found (almost) nowhere else in the world.

Even though the closest park to my house is Six Flags America, I consider Kings Dominion to be my "home park. It's the park I've visited the most just in front of Hershey park and Busch Gardens, and many memories have been made here. As I kid, I remember getting lost in Soak City (Then called waterworks), and getting a rollback on my first ever ride on Volcano. I was initially sad when Paramount left and Cedar fair changed a number of things(especially when Nickelodeon left), but when stuff like Dominator and i305 were added, I quickly learned to like the new owners. While investment in the park slowed a little bit in the mid 2010s, that seems to be changing with Twisted Timbers and Jungle Expedition, which is great news.
I haven't visited the park since 2019, and that was I really cursed day. Rides breaking down left and right, Boo Blasters shut down mid-ride, Volcano was gone, and I lost my wallet on i305. almost lost my phone, but I caught it before it ran off. Ironically, after that ride, i305 closed for the rest of the day. But I've been to the park often enough to know that this is an anomaly and not the way the park normally runs. This is why you'll want use Zippered pocket pants! (or the lockers if you're on Twisted Timbers.)
But yeah, I should go back to the park soon and see what Jungle Expedition is all about. Tumbili may be a Free Spin, but it looks like the best free spin ever built, and whatever replaces Volcano's plot will undoubtedly be good.

Just rode Racer 75 and it was really rough, and Grizzly felt like it was coming apart--like I was being jack hammered in my seat. On Racer 75, one lady complained that her retraints wouldn't lock and she was forced to stand up during the drops.

I just went here the first time on June 30 last week. I didn’t mind anaconda and i305 and Twisted Timbers are fire rides! The park was beautiful but I feel like it didn’t have enough rides for older people like my aunt and uncle when we were there. It was a great experience, however.

Over the last decade or so, not every year, but a lot of them, me and a small group of friends will go visit the park sometime in May. Even on the weekends, the lines are so incredibly short, or just non existent, that you end up going on coaster after coaster after coaster. You actually get tired of it. So as long as you go before school is out, it's not crowded at al.

Right where you said they could add a bathroom was where I figure they could put an entry to whatever replaces Volcano. My thinking is that instead of a new ride as part of Jungle Xpedition, they could put the entry there, theme is in with Flight of Fear and tie it in with Area 72 concept. They could also remove Anaconda and put something else there. And then that area might start to feel more cohesive.

While I was on White Water Canyon a month ago, apparently the ride was getting stopped halfway through because one of the ride ops was smoking weed. That was very interesting, especially because that meant we were going extra slow through the horrifying lumber mill at the end.

Kings Dominion is my home park and it is amazing. However, when they replace Volcano they should put in a Vekoma Suspended Thrill Coaster. This would give the park a coaster under the track and with inversions. While a B&M Invert would be perfect that will not happen because of Alpengeist at Busch Gardens. This also would be the first Vekoma STC in America which would make it marketable. If not that then a S&S Air Launch coaster like Maxx Force as a tribute to Hypersonic XLC would be cool.

This is also my home park (along with bg, but i prefer kd so i go there more often), and i do agree with the fact that they have so much space to do stuff with and its sad that there just isnt a whole lot going on in places where there could be an entire candy apple grove sized section. If they just scrapped Anaconda and Grizzly, they could fit in at least 5-10 more rides including 2 or 3 potentially world-class coasters. If Cedar Fair could just see the potential of the park, which pulls in so many people all the way from the DMV area, we could really have a top 3 cedar fair park.
