  • Handbags are not a financial investment for the most part, in this video I share with you the handbags I have sold and lost the most money on. Fair to say I have lost a small fortune on some of these bags! Some I sold before I really knew what I was doing, some I didn't do my research on, but on all of these I have definitely made mistakes, definitely have regrets and have most definitely learned some lessons!! Don't make the same mistakes I did, learn from mine as these can be costly!

I’m so glad that you are doing this video! I actually think 50% of the original price is what most people should expect for bag that is excellent condition. If I am lucky I can sell luxury bag for 70% of the original value if I sell it on the various BST’s. If I try to sell to a consignment or reseller place (like Fashionphile, Yoogi’s Closet, etc.) I’m lucky to get an offer that is 40% of the original value. I have one buyout offer that was 10% of the original price, for a bag I’d perhaps used 5 times. Suffice to say, that bag is still in my collection!
I think that sometimes we forget that even if a bag has never been used it’s still a used bag and you won’t recoup even 90% of what you paid. Same way if you buy a new car drive it off the lot and then try to resell if even if you never drove it again. It stinks, but it is what it is. And there are bags and brands that you will just do better. Chanel mini’s in cavier you will sell well because they have been discontinued, but that is the exception not the norm. RUclipsrs who talk about making money on bags have been lucky or had a large enough audience that they could charge an influencer tax. That isn’t reality.
Losing money when you ell is just a fact. I’m so glad you are pointing that out. And, it’s why I think you should always return a bag if you have any doubts about a piece unless you have stupid money, because 99% of the time you will lose significant money.

Love your video. I have quite a collection of vintage bags that really don’t get used much. I missed out on the LV collaborations with Steven Sprouse, Takashi Murakami and others in the 2000’s because I was raising 3 kids and there wasn’t that kind of disposable income. When I started buying those bags on the preloved sites they weren’t that expensive at the time. I don’t carry them very often but I love looking at them. They really bring me joy because they remind me of that time period. The bags I buy to carry all the time have to fit in a certain category, like work, travel and shopping. The mistakes I’ve made is thinking a certain style would work and after carrying it I realized they do not. Example the Fendi bucket bag. I too settled for the bucket bag in the multicolored because the baguette was sold out. I will not sell it but I will not be buying another one. I love you chat videos because they are honest.

my impression of selling, just from browsing fashionphile prices is you're probably lucky to get near half back on any of the bags you sell. like i guess it softens the blow of having to get rid of something that didn't work out.
Selling shoes is even worse. I had some new shoes that were basically new (i scuffed the soles while trying them on so i couldn't return them) and only got 200 for them (they cost $1600). i'm never buying designer shoes online again, it's just not worth it. I feel like i should have just kept the shoes and tried to see if i could get them altered to work for me in some way.

I bought a tweed CF from Meredith for $7300 Cdn which already was a deep discount from what she paid. I didn’t love it as much as I thought so have tried selling it for $5000usd which would be $6500Cdn. Not even a nibble. So now it’s reduced to $4500usd less than a mini. The handbag is still in style like a hobo handbag and since big bag is also coming bag. Then i just decided to keep it, used it even i have used it once. I fell out of love with it because the handle when on my shoulder is just nice but if i were to get into the handbag, i cannot sling it to the front to get my stuff out but instead i have to remove it from my shoulder to get my stuff out. Lesson learned but will stick on to it and perhaps just attached a longer strap to make it work although the shoulder strap cannot be removed. I can feel our pain and yours will be more painful. 😬😪

I call this the magpie syndrome: ....
you see something shiny and new, and you MUST have it!
Magpies get a fixed stare towards the shiny, regardless of the fact that the item is useless to them.
My grandfather was building fences on his farm and he took off his gold watch and put it on the fencepost.
Really heavy physical exertion can damage a watch.
A magpie spied the watch and swooped down and stole it!
This was a great loss to my grandfather who was very careful with money, the watch was also a sentimental thing to him and it grieved him greatly.
It was particularly challenging that he loved animals so much, he was a sensitive person and used to read poetry, particularly Keats and Wordsworth.
This is because he never played sport, due to being partially disabled. But he worked ferociously hard and was more successful than most farmers in the area.
His wife came from the Isle of Bute she also loved animals too. It was their thing. They would feed the domestic animals first before they ate, always.
I think of that magpie with the ticking watch...guiltless of its crime. Lol!
Be kind to yourself above all else.

So, here is the question: do you regret mostly that the chosen bags didn’t work for you and you had to part with them or that you didn’t make a proper research of resale market (at the time) and sold it a waaay too cheap?
I’ve always thought that once you resell an item that didn’t work for you (even in perfect condition) you need to prepare yourself for at least 20-30% loss (of coz there is a list of exceptions), but I’m a bit taken aback by the resale platforms these days. I think there are a lot of ppl who are completely delusional when it comes to setting the price. I’ll give an example. It’s been almost a year since I’ve been looking for a puzzle bag in a specific color+size and once it pops on VC the price is either the same as in the shop or even higher. It’s not a Birkin/Kelly and I can get this price from an official store but it makes me puzzled what was the thinking process when ppl put that price? I find it ridiculous that some sellers don’t get the concept of a resale platform. I also lost a lot of money on reselling my LV/Marni/etc bags. But that was a great eyes-opening experience about my own shopping habits. These days I don’t want to bring more of an expensive burden in my closet and mind. If it’s going to be a really pricey purchase than there will be some extra research and certain steps taken.

Once you buy a bag the money you spend is already gone. I think people need to realize that your things are only worth the price a buyer is willing to pay. Its stupid to keep holding on to bags because of the ”loss” you will get from reselling, you already lost 100% of the price you paid and should be glad with the amount you get back, even if its 50%! If it just stays un-used taking up space in your home and mind, you still have a 100% loss. Maby even more if you keep paying for insurance..
