The Monte Carlo has always been a favorite of mine, the fact that you could have swivel bucket seats, from 73-77, that made entry & exit nice, too bad that the days of personal luxury cars & that niche market no longer exists, that long hood short deck styling just looked so appealing, the fact that you could custom order a new car was more fun because it represents your sense of taste in color keyed trim instead of the boring trend today, but that was then this is now!!!

The body style was so beautiful then and now. This was a great car if you lived in a potholed city and wanted a comfortable ride. Its pluses outweighed the negatives (lack of road feel, gas hog) and reliability was reasonable. I think the price however was exhorbitant. Anyone know how much they were in the marketplace? I would love to hear about this. Did a ton of the msrp go to fancy bodywork, scores of color and trim combinations?

@@theemulsionalchemist5688 You can’t overlook the effect of the myriad of federal mandates on Detroit at the time. The bumpers affected the looks and added weight. The safety crash standards as well… these meant less sport and gas mileage. GM did the best they could to mitigate these demands, and this era of Monte looked incredible. Look at that folded glass backlight!

The “Colonnade” style Monte’s were the most attractive of all. The were very popular and sold like crazy. I do recall seeing more ‘76 models than any of the other years in the Toronto area. That was the first year of the stacked mini square headlamps, guess that new feature was really appealing. Cars looked good going around a NASCAR track as well.

I have a ‘76 model that I bought a few years ago to use as a winter car.. needless to say it saw only one winter before I began to restore it. It runs like a dream with a 400 small block, bench seats, and power windows/locks. It was the last year an engine that big made it into a Chevy. In 2022 I drove it 350 miles to NYC and back to pick up a stranded friend. It ran all day and didn’t burn any oil. What a gal.

This guy is a cross between Clint Eastwood and Lyle Waggoner.
I miss my 1970 Monte Carlo. In 1996 I got an apartment and the landlord had his departed wife's '74 Monte in the garage. Pristine condition with only 34,000 miles on it. He wouldn't sell it to me. He died a year later and his family junked the Monte, his '71 Caddy and his '58 Caddy.

The junkyard will do what makes them the most money. If the car was pristine they would have sold it to someone else and not scrapped it. It would have been nicer if he sold it to you though.

Excellent restoration work on the film! My neighbor had a new '73 Monte Carlo - fully loaded, triple white, 454, swivel buckets and console. What a magnificent automobile. I drove it once and rode in it many times (I was too young for even a learner's permit then). The 454 still had decent power in '73. Thanks for the memories.
