- Training Documentary movie for the legendary Bulgarian weightlifting team and coach Ivan Abadjiev at times when almost every gold medal was won by a Bulgarian lifter.
Abadjiev’s system has become the spiritual forerunner to “MAX OUT EVERY DAY” fanatics
Abadjiev’s approach paid dividends. Bulgaria won three Gold medals and three Silver medals at the 1972 Olympics. How good was that? No Bulgarian athlete had placed four years earlier. By 1974, Bulgaria began dominating the teenage divisions and, at the 1976 Olympics, Bulgaria won two Gold medals, three Silver medals, and one Bronze medal. Little by little, Bulgaria was gaining ground on the mighty Soviets.
At the 1981 and 1983 World Championships, Bulgaria won nine medals compared to the Soviets’ ten. By 1984, Bulgarian lifters held twelve of 30 world records.
At the 1985 World Championships-16 years after he had taken over as head coach of the National team-Ivan Abadjiev made good on his promise. The Bulgarian team defeated the USSR.
They beat them again at the 1986 World’s and continued to dominate until the early 1990s when many Bulgarian lifters began migrating to other countries. By then, Bulgaria was no longer under Communist oppression.
To understand just how amazing it was for Bulgaria to best the Soviets, consider this fact. In 1984, the USSR had 340,000 registered weightlifters. Bulgaria had only 5,000.
In 2017, Ivan Abadjiev passed away at the age of 85 years. During his career, he coached 12 Olympic champions and 57 world champions. His methods, known as “The Bulgarian Training System,” were controversial-seen as harsh, perhaps even cruel. But no one can argue with the results.

I competed for the USA in this era. The Bulgarians were machines....pharmaceuticals or not these guys were the best.... bar none. Not even the Soviets could touch them although they were a bit smarter ergogenically. The sad fact of this video is that most of their lifts are misses. They were taxed to 90% loads on a daily basis and NO ONE ANYWHERE could do this.. I wish that they had made a video showing what they did rather than what they did not do.

With Russia Alexeev,Rigert,Vlasov,Zhabonitsky,Kurlovich,Tareneko,Plunkfelder etc come right to my mind.All the big super heavy weights were Russians.The Bulgarians always had the little guys and their lifters had short careers do to their methods.
themetalgod21 Really? Did you even watch this video? They won 7 of 10 classes. They also got screwed in 88 for diuretics or they would have won most of the classes there. The Soviets were awesome...granted and still are and I was in awe of them as well (Vardanyan I believe being the best ever). In that span though of the 80s the Bulgarians were king. End of story.

Before 4 days we had another Bulgarian who won 2021 European Weightlifting Championship - 16 year old Karlos Nasar, 206kg clean and jerk at 81kg in bodyweight.
This aged like fine wine.

Great video! So rare, so valuable. An in depth look at Abadjiev and his charges. Now we know how and why Bulgaria ruled: hard, heavy work, huge loads, everyday. Sore knees? Too bad! Work through it! Squat some more! All of this heavy work must have taken a toll. We see 67.5 Mikhail Petrov, who was like a meteor, here today, gone tomorrow. Alex Varbanov, 75, who did 215.5, still has not been equaled. Borislav Gidikov. Mitko Grablev, with the sore arm, won in 88 but tested positive, with Angel Guenchev in 67.5, whose 162.5 and 202.5 have not been beaten, 30 years later. This was the cream of the crop. Only the strongest survived. 90k Ivan Chakharov had probably the longest career. I would love to see Bulgaria come back to the heights.

Naim Suleymanoglu is part of this group as well even though he represented Turkey. He was a pupil of Abadjiev's school. And we all know what his total is!
Teodosiev, yes! Thank you! Conspicuously absent is Andon Nikolov, who must have been injured...or perhaps retired by then. He had an absolutely epic battle with Rigert at the 1976 Europeans, world records falling like rain. Nedelcho Kolev, Anton Kodjabashev, Valentin Christov, Alexander Kraichev, Norair Nurikyan, Gyorgy and Todor Todorov, Beloslav Manolov and Alexander Platchkov were all among the great first wave of Abadjiev's pupils.
I saw many comments about some compares and opinion is never to never unrespect country, culture etc. It's our false that we gave so much good coaches to other countries.
Antonio Krastev, what a beast, a snatch of 216 kilograms that has stood the test of time. After 30 years Lasha Talakhadze is the only man to have bettered Krastev’s snatch in international competition.

The training loads are hard to endure and the coach pushes when you have injuries.
So many former lifters have permanent injuries hips, shoulders, knees and the effect of drugs never go away.
RF Johns Yes but they are all Olympic and World champions. They are not some regular fitness guys who lift from time to time. Nothing comes for free. If you want to be the best in the world, you should pay the price.
***** well that is subjective my friend..yes for you, myself and probably 99.9% of people in the world would not be willing to make these sacrifices but these athlete's they have quite literally dedicated their lives to this sport so they do what they have to whatever the price
Every top athlete has tons of injuries after his or hers career regardless of the training style. You cannot be the best if you are pushing your self hard as you can; that is when the injuries happen.

the idea of lifting with intent, instead of going to failure, is one of the best tool one can use since it helps for technique, speed and power.
if you lift with intent of achieving your max, your body adapts to it sooner than high reps with minimal weights.

Ерата на Абаджиев с най-добрите щангисти и момчета одадени на спорта.Достойно време с достойни силни спортисти,вече няма такива момчета дали всичко за спорта.По лицата им личи ,че са били сериозни млади мъже.Миналото специално от видеото се показват кадри,които няма да се повторат.Така е било и с Борбата от Спортното през ония години.Няма я тая наглост,няма го голямото самочуствие и мръсни погледи.От кадрите виждам,скромни мъжки момчета трениращи с голям хъс.Единствено доказващи на треньора и себе си.Днешните так.нар. спортисти са едно надути със самочуствие хора,в които погрешно показват че се величаят.И нямат нищо общо с шампионите от видеото!Такъв е длъжен да бъде всеки спортист,както са тези момчета на Абаджията!

Amazing Bulgarian lifter
The Bulgarian Olympic Weightlifters of the 80's under Coach Ivan Abajiev, with other past champions helping the coaching from Kolev, Nuriyaken, Rusev, and others, was the greatest to be assembled and train. From each category 52kg to Superheavy weight, was superior in competition. Especially, the classes 52kg to 90kg, pound for pound strongest in the world that time. To this day, no other country can come close to them what they lifted in competition. Not even, so called China. Their training was so serious, and that attitude produced the greatest lifters. Why not, the government of Bulgarian supported Olympic Weightlifting. Their ruvals was the Russians, no one else. Yeah, the Russians were super strong, too.

The word "pomak" comes from the word "pomachen", with meaning "tormented", because they were Bulgarian Christians in the past but the Othomans forcefully changed their religion. Naim is one of those, but he was brainwashed by Turkish propaganda to think that he is something else. He ran to Turkey, because the Bulgarian communists at that time were changing/GIVING BACK the Bulgarian names of the Muslimized Bulgarians (pomaks and some turks).

Why Naim Suleymanoğlu is not here in this movie? He was at that championship and went to broke records. So what is the problem?
He changed his nationality to Turkey so didn't compete for Bulgaria even although he trained with them
@@callumbarnes554 Just for the record; Naim was part of Bulgarian National weightlifting team and had been world champion with breaking records in this competition in 1986.
@@barispeace Yes. Sorry I should have been clearer. I think they removed him and any sections of him from this documentary due to the switch although he was still Bulgarian at the time.
Naim already was defected turkiye at that point
@@may_laytrucker3127 He was present at this time and won the world championship at Sofia in 1986. It's recorded and there is videos and pictures about it. I don't mean the championship in 1987.
