  • Hostile Waters is a great PC game from 2001, now available on GOG.com, and on Steam. I was one of the programmers who worked on this game and here are two easter eggs that I added. Note that you must launch the game using -setusupthebomb as a command line parameter! Make a shortcut to HostileWaters.exe to do this - the GOG launcher runs HostileSetup.exe by default and adding the parameter to this will not work.

    I'm 30 right now and when I was a kid I wanted to play this so bad, but my 133mhz processor and Voodoo2 couldn't handle it.
    Thanks for helping make this now hidden gem.

    oh wow YOU were one of the programmers??? Let me just give a big, huge thank you for one of the greatest and most underrated games that I have ever seen. Out of thousands of games, over 20 years.
    It's such a shame that we didn't get a remake, more missions, map editor, multiplayer or mods... what was hostile waters programmed in? C++? How were the levels designed? I would've loved to design some custom levels

      Hmm, I replied, but youtube ate it. Let's try again. Thanks very much! I'm very glad to hear you like the game :) I wasn't one of the main guys - I worked on this game for about 1 of the 4 years it took to make. It was programmed in C++. The level editor was made from the game itself, but not built into the game.My memory is a bit fuzzy, there may have been other tools as well in order to make the terrain, such as 3D Studio MAX.
      A multiplayer version was actually made, but there was no interest in publishing it at the time, which is a great shame.

      @@chridmeister youtube and other sites got to learn how to censor, it's an automated ''learning'' script, nobody knows for sure what it looks for when it tries to censor people. Usually it just says ''unknown error'', sometimes it makes you think you posted it but you refresh and the comment is not there. Some sites say ''you're doing that too much''. To verify that it was a censor, you can just refresh the page, paste the comment again, get the same error. Refresh page, post a simple short comment and it immediately goes up. I wouldn't know if that was the reason for your comment but I'm letting you know in general. It's easier for them to censor comments if you're not aware they did it.

    Dude this is amazing!
    Would probably rank this game as my all time favourite! despite the content/graphics/story of other games, this still has some charm and feel that no other game can come close to!
    And the fact that you were a dev is just awesome to hear!
    there's a group of people (or it's just 1 dude, not sure) who currently is working on a remake for this gem. I found it over on moddb, but they have a youtube channel and twitter as well, and a website. I believe it's hostile-waters.com or something.
    You're probably busy with other projects atm, but thought you might be interested. Can imagine that your input or help could be worth gold to them! :)
    Love the game, so thank you so much for being part of its creation!

    Epic game, one of my favourite games of all times. I still have two box copies - Polish and British (first without box anymore :/ ) and one bugged version from polish gaming magazine - the first that I got. I remember that the first mission with alien suicide units was bugged and crashing every 1-2 minutes, but I was so fond of this game that I got through by clicking autosave like crazy. Ehh... those were days.
    It's so sad that it didn't have any modding tools. I'm damn sure that with multiplayer or custom battles it would still be played.

      I know someone who does, but unfortunately this wouldn't be an easy thing to do. The tool chain required to build this project became obsolete a long time ago, and would require quite a bit of archaeology. One thing that was actually finished, but never released, was multiplayer mode. The code for that still exists.

    • @Kvantovy

      Do you know of software that can edit HW files like .aim or .lev? I've been trying to mod the game, mostly because I wanted to make a Hard Mode for veterans or custom maps, but I've accomplished very little due to the most important files being inaccessible. Well, I did crash Antaeus into a mountain... i.imgur.com/FmaLbyp.jpg

      Agreed, this game needs a mod tool, so much wasted potential... Even it would be great if original mapping tools were released if it is not protected by any rights.

      I created a topic in Steam Discussions section of Hostile Waters: steamcommunity.com/app/267980/discussions/0/3223871682610538721/ Maybe if enough people voice their support for the idea, the current owners will release some tools.

    I've replayed Hostile Waters countless times and I thought I knew everything there was to know about it. Consider me humbled! Christian, you wouldn't be able to answer any questions about your part in the programming would you? I'm very interested to learn certain things like how the Antaeus crew gain experience, minimum requirements for medals, those kinds of things.
    I'm a newbie learning how to work in Unreal Engine 4 and a dream of mine is to one day be part of making a game that would do Hostile Waters proud. Any opportunities I can get to learn about the development process is like striking gold for me.

      well, you have no idea, how often I had those words rolling through my head over the years... I have quite bad depression from the years of child abuse I went through, I have never taken any kind of medication or that, but what helps from time to time is when I went out on my mountain bike, finding myself alone in the middle of nowhere, and that song would pop into my head, it would help me get through the day, I also used to have a cocker spaniel (he sadly had to be put down in april last year) but I would sing that song to him lol. anyway it was one of those things that kept me going from time to time, so thanks again, Ransom was my fave. character in the game.

      it's always the small things, the seemingly insignificant, the silly things that often are the things that keep people going, never assume for a moment that the things you do or say equate to nothing, I am quite delighted to have spoken with you, the person that sang that hidden song, I am quite tickled by that, it has made my day today for sure.... I am going to be telling a few friends about this for sure.

    I wonder what else secrets will be revealed or not, like i found out some assets for mp maps but they lack of models in original game, only name and file's path are presented.
    Also, for me its quite unclear why some voice lines was cut, like about cold generators and command center.
    Still nice Easter Egg :D
    That i like return and listen in a while.

      If you do a search for "hostile waters remake" there are quite a few people who have been rabidly dissecting the game for years and probably know more about it than us guys who made the game. I can't remember that much about it now, it was over 20 years ago that I was involved in the project. There was a multiplayer version made, but it was never published. I was responsible for integration of the speech into the game and I can't for the life of me remember why those specific lines were dropped, but I can tell you that there was quite a bit more dialogue scripted and recorded but never used. Some things never made it to the finished game, things were changed, sone lines just didn't work during gameplay.

    How much levels was planned 20-30 ? And why they left this one level with crushed planes and helicopters ? In my opinion that was great

    • @blepcogames9446
      @blepcogames9446 4 года назад

      I can't remember how many levels were planned in total, but there were supposed to be several more in the game. The big problem was that the game took four years to make - way way longer than it was supposed to - and it had to come to an end. No more time could be spared, and the game had to be cut short.

    Does each crew soulchip specialty REALLY ACTUALLY differs from one another other than personality? There doesn't seem to be any improved advantage and/or disadvantage putting a chopper superior soulchip into a tank platform & any perceived skill improvement seems to be a placebo effect. I'm hoping someone can prove me wrong in more detail.

    • @chridmeister
      @chridmeister  5 лет назад +2

      As far as I remember, there are differences, but they're extremely subtle. Balancing that part of the game was very difficult - because there are only a few soul chips, it would wreck the game if any of them were actually bad at something. The same goes for skill improvements, if you start a chip off with poor skills, it's useless, and if you make the skills too good, the units can then just go off by themselves and win the game for you. I do still have the source code somewhere, I might dig it up later and confirm this for you.

    • @KillRei
      @KillRei 5 лет назад

      OMG, Thank you very much, dude! My deepest gratitude to you for answering one of the questions about the gameplay that's been hanging over my head for nearly TWO DECADE (Yeah, nobody gave me a definitive answer). So I take it that it's alright for example to crew Ransom who is an ace pilot to a tank and he won't suck as much as a pro tank driver?
      What about the shield & ablative armor? Do they stack & give additional protection when inserting more than one of each on the slots? Same question but with weapon augmentation (such as weapon rate of fire).
      It's quite unfortunate that there is no expansion pack or sequel for this game despite the game's potential (and the 2 sequel baiting at the finale & post credit scene...). The gameplay alone is why I love this game but the crew personality & banter is epic. I myself have not played a gameplay as similar as this game ever since.
      Last question, who is the current IP holder of this game? Does Rage Software Limited still hold it despite being defunct or is it in the air?
      Once again, thank you for answering my unreasonably difficult question and thank you for being part of an amazing experience of a game.

      @Kvantovy That is quite unfortunate to hear. Someone needs to continue making more of this game's sequel or at least this type of gameplay. I'm hungry for more. Can you please share with me what other games has this similar type of gameplay? And thank you for the info.

    • @Kvantovy
      @Kvantovy 5 лет назад +2

      @@KillRei Unfortunately nothing comes even close to HW gameplay or story. I think that Carrier Command: Gaia Mission is a bit similar, but personally I didn't like it very much.
      If only we had the editor for HW, we could make new maps, new challenges... I always wanted to make sth like a "hard mode" :D With more numerous and challenging enemies, e.g. give Cabal units the shield.
